They gave me this job until we start winning as punishment! BTW - I get no respect!

Winning is contagious and losing is contagious. Right now it feels like this team does not know how to win a game.
Going to the Boardwalk. Maybe will check in later.

JD cleaning up. Why not? It’s luck of the draw who gets a hit. Jones at DH? Same as Davis at clean up. But I was hoping for another day off for Gleyber… at least he didn’t look like he was dead yesterday. He was smiling and joking around in the dugout…

The Blue Jays send out lefty Yusei Kikuchi to try to take two in a row from the Yanks. Kikuchi pitched against the Yanks twice already this season, so I won't go over his path to the majors again. After the 2nd excellent start in a row against the Yanks in April, Kikuchi was 1-1 with a 2.08 ERA. He was OK in his next 6 starts as well, going 1-3 with a 2.97 ERA. Since then, Kikuchi has struggled, pitching very well in two of them, but getting his hard in four. On the season, Kikuchi is 4-7 with an ERA of 4.00. In 83 1/3 innings he's allowed 91 hits, 39 runs, 37 earned, 11 HR, and 20 BB with 86 K, with a WHIP of 1.332. Against teams other than the Yankees, he's 3-7 with an ERA of 4.50, and in 72 innings, he's allowed 82 hits, 38 runs, 36 earned, 17 BB and 70 K, and all 11 HR. His WHIP against every one else is 1.375. The Red Sox and Guardians got 9 earned runs off him in 6 innings in his last two starts, both losses.
This will be Kikuchi's 15th appearance and 13th start against the Yanks. In 64 1/3 innings, he's 5-3 with a 3.08 ERA. In 64 1/3 innings, he's allowed 53 hits, 23 runs, 22 earned, 8 HR, 25 BB and 65 K. His WHIP against them is 1.212 and the team quadruple slash line against him is .225/.306/.381/.687. He's made two starts against the Yanks so far this season. In his 2nd start of the season, he shut out the Yanks for 5 1/3 innings, giving up 4 hits and 2 BB while striking out 7 in a 3-0 Jays win at the Stadium. Two starts later, he held the Yanks to just one run on 4 hits and a BB while striking out 9 in 5-4 Jays' win at Rogers Centre.
Repertoire: Kikuchi is a 4-pitch lefty: fastball, curve, slider and change. His offspeed pitches get less drop than average, in the case of the change and curve significantly less than average. The curve also gets considerably less horizontal movement than average. His FB has better than average "rise" but less than average "run". By "run values" his FB is average, the curve is a little better than average and the change and slider a little worse. His FB velocity and spin are considerably better than average, but curve spin a bit below average. He's yet another pitcher the Yanks have faced recently who has elite extension, he's been top 10-12% in the league the last 3 years. Since last year, he's throwing the slider about 60% less often, and the curve about 40% more often. The pitch mix so far this season: FB averaging 95-6 about 48% of the time, the curve 83 about 27%, the slider 89 about 15%, and the change 87 about 10%.
Playing the name game...we've played these names before, twice. He's a double unique name, no other Yuseis in MLB history, no other Kikuchis, either.

The Yanks send Marcus Stroman to the mound to try to even the series. Marcus battles hard in every game, but has been very inconsistent lately. He battled the tough Braves lineup for 6 2/3 innings last time, earning the only Yankee win in that series. The game before that, he lasted just 5 innings, giving up 7 hits, 4 BB and 4 runs to the Red Sox in a 9-3 loss. The start before that, he shut out the Royals for 5 2/3 in a 10-1 Yankees win. The start before that, the Twins knocked him out in the 5th, having given up 5 runs in 4 2/3 innings, giving him a no-decision in a game the Yanks hung on to win 8-5.
On the season, Stroman is 7-3 with a 3.15 ERA. In 16 starts, he's pitched 91 1/3 innings, allowing 75 hits, 36 runs, 32 earned, 12 HR, 40 BB and just 67 K's. His WHIP on the season is an average 1.252. The high walk rate and deep counts he frequently runs keep him from getting deep into games, he's gone less than 6 innings in 9 of the 16 starts, but he hasn't gotten knocked out of any start before finishing the 4th. He's 4th in the AL in most walks allowed, has has the 3rd highest BB/9 rate among 36 qualified AL starters.
This is his 3rd career start against the Jays, and he's pitched well in all three. This year, he threw 6 shutout innings against the Jays and Kikuchi in the start in early April, the Yanks lost 3-0 when Ferguson and Santana gave up 3 runs in the late innings. In the game in Toronto in mid-April, he struggled for 5 2/3 innings, giving up 6 hits, 2 BB, and a HR, but held the Jays to 2 runs in a 6-4 Yankees win. Overall, he's 0-0 in the 3 starts with a 1.65 ERA. In 16 1/3 innings, he's allowed 12 hits, 3 runs, all earned, 1 HR, and 5 BB, with 9 K. His WHIP against Toronto is 1.041, and their team quadruple slash line against Stroman is .200/.273/.317/.589.

Yesterday, it was Carlos Rodon's "turn in the barrel again". The Jays annihilated him for 5 in the 1st, and 3 more in the 2nd; in each inning he gave George Springer a fat fastball in a 2-strike count and Springer smashed each one for a 3-run. The game was effectively over after the 2nd one. Trent Grisham landed the only blow for the Yanks off of Jose Berrios, the only started the Yanks regularly hit. He went 7 and got the W in the 9-2 Jays' romp. Rodon's hung on to finish 3 more innings, demanding that Boone leave him in to get the last 2 outs in the 4th, but his ERA has ballooned to 4.42 in just 3 awful starts.
The Yanks finally lost solo possession of first place for the first time since mid-May, as the O's did similar awful things to Jon Gray and the Rangers, demolishing Texas, 11-2. The O's piled up 14 hits and 4 HR on their side and their ace Corbin Burnes scattered 9 hits, allowing just 1 run for his 9th win. The Red Sox and Rays had last night off.
As of the start of play today, the O's moved into first by percentage points. The Sox are now just 7 1/2 back, the Rays are 11 back, and the Jays picked up a full game and are now 13 1/2 back.

Today in the East, the Nats travel to Tampa to begin a 3-game series with the Rays. Mitchell Parker (5-3, 3.30 ERA) for Washington; Zack Eflin (3-5, 4.20 ERA) for Tampa. That game is top 2nd, 0-0. The Rangers play their 2nd of 4 games at Camden Yards. Max Scherzer makes his 2nd start for Texas since coming off the IL, he won his 1st without allowing a run. Albert Suarez throws for Baltimore; he's 3-2 with a 2.70 ERA. That game is just underway. The Padres are in Fenway for the first of 3 games vs. the Red Sox. Ex-Yankee Randy Vasquez (2-4, 5.10 ERA) goes for the Padres, and NIck Pivetta (4-4, 4.04 ERA) throws for the Sox. That game is about to get underway, just like the Yankee game.
And that concludes the pre-game stuff, just in time for 1st pitch.

. He can probably pick it… That doesn't look like a first baseman's mitt. Okay, yes it is. Once I watched the video. I was talking about Stroman at second base, but I like Judge testing out first base. I need to see Rice turn on a couple balls and hit something with pop at this point. He’s settled in enough now to go after one here and there. He’s drawing some criticism as a first sacker from some posters now. Fair enough. Also unfair. He has so little experience there…I think for the level of experience, which was 35 MiLB games with 9 errors, he’s shown growth there…
