In the 3rd game of the series in Toronto, the Jays send Chris Bassitt to the mound. He started against the Yanks in Toronto in April, so there's no need to recap his career again. That game was one of just two of his first six starts in which Bassitt did not get hit; even with that game against the Yanks, after 6 starts, he was 2-4 with a 5.64 ERA. He had 3 OK starts after that, but he's gotten hot his last 7 starts, 3-0 with a 1.64 ERA. In the other four, the Jays lost by one run each game; in the last three, Bassitt left with a lead and the bullpen blew his win each time. On the season, Bassitt is now 6-6 with an ERA of 3.45, right near his career ERA of 3.48. In 16 starts, he's pitched 91 1/3 innings, and allowed 90 hits, 38 runs, 35 earned, 8 HR, 35 BB and struck out 83. His WHIP so far this season is subpar 1.369, but in those last 7 starts, it's just 1.186.
This will be Bassitt's 5th career start against the Yanks; he's been nothing short of brilliant in the previous 4. He's 2-0 with a 1.00 ERA against the Yanks. In 27 innings, he's allowed 18 hits, 3 runs, all earned, just 1 HR, 6 BB and struck out 31. His WHIP against them is a elite 0.889, and the Yankee team quadruple slash line against him is a meager .188/.243/.240/.482. In the start this season, he went 6 1/3, allowing 4 hits, 1 run (earned), 2 BB and struck out 5, earning the W in a 3-1 Jays win.
Repertoire: Bassitt is another kitchen-sink righty. He throws 8 different pitches: both fastballs, both sliders, curve, change, splitter and cutter. He doesn't throw that hard, but the range of velocities of his 8 pitches goes from 71 up to 93. Both FB get unremarkable movment, the sinker gets a bit more run than average. The slider's movement is average, but the sweeper gets considerably more drop than average. The curve gets average drop and a little better than average break toward the glove side. The change gets elite "tail" in on righties and away from lefties. The cutter's drop is better than average, but the break in on lefties is well below average. The splitter is the gem of the 8 pitches in terms of movement, getting well above average drop and well above average tailing action. By run value, however, the big plusses are the sinker and cutter, the larger minuses are the splitter (despite its above average two-plane break), the change and the four-seamer. Bassitt gets well below average spin on both the FB and curve, and his FB velo is also well below average. His extension is slightly below average, but a bit better so far this season.
Playing the name game...we've played these names before...way too many Chrises, Christophers and Christys, the best of them either Hall of Fame Old-timer Christy Mathewson or, if that's too far back, then current Braves' starter Chris Sale, and Chris Chambliss is the Yankee favorite in this area. The Jays' starter is the only Bassitt in MLB history.

Yesterday, the Yanks got off sluggishly, Kikuchi shut them down cold the first three innings, but they scratched across a run on a walk to Soto, a single by Judge and some great baserunning by both on a potential DP grounder that Judge froze on, allowing Soto to come home as the Rays made a delayed play to first. The Jays got two in the 5th to break the tie, but Trevino made a brilliant play not flipping to Tonkin on a short wild pitch, diving himself headfirst into home to nail Guerrero, ending the rally. The Yanks exploded for 6 in the 6th, the big blows being a 3 run HR by Soto that gave the Yanks the lead and a two-run tack-on HR by Torres. The Jays rallied to cut the lead to 7-5, but the Yanks added 2 in the 8th and 7 more in the 9th to blow out the Jays, 16-5. Stroman battled for 4 1/3 but got some bad BABIP luck; the bullpen did a pretty good job on the Jays over the next 4 2/3, with Tonkin getting himself a cheap W. The win broked the Yanks 4-game losing streak and put them 22 games over .500 again at 53-31.
In other AL East action...The O's got 6 shutout innings from Albert Suarez, and 1 run off Rangers' starter Max Scherzer in both the 4th and 5th, and held on to win, 2-1. Texas had the tying and go-ahead runs on base in both the 7th and 8th, but couldn't push them across. The win was the O's 3rd straight after 5 straight losses. For the Rangers, it was their 5th loss in a row after climbing to within 3 games of .500. The defending champs are going to have to get going soon if they want to repeat. The Padres got 9 runs in the 5th before anyone was out, including a 2-run HR by ex-Yankee Higashioka and a 3-run bomb by rookie Jackson Merrill, and that pretty much ended that game vs. the Red Sox at Fenway. Ex-Yankees Randy Vasquez and Wandy Peralta went the first five innings, but the scorer gave Stephen Kolek his 2nd win for 2 shutout innings of relief. The win was the Padres' 4th in a row and 8th in their last 9 games. The Rays got solo HRs from Jose Siri in the 2nd and 6th, Zack Eflin threw 6 shutout innings, and the bulppen held on to beat the Nats, 3-1. The Nats have now lost 4 in a row, while the Rays have now won 8 of their last 10.
The Yanks begin play today up percentage points behind the O's in 2nd (.634 to .631), The Sox dropped to 8 1/2 back, the Rays stayed 11 back and the Jays fell to 14 1/2 back.
Elsewhere in the AL East today, The Padres play the middle game of their series in Fenway at 4:10 pm. Ex-Yankee Michael King (5-5, 3.75 ERA) goes for the Pads; Tanner Houck, now 7-5 with an AL-leading 2.18 ERA, goes for Boston. Also at 4:10 in Tampa, the Nats play their middle game against the Rays. Jake Irvin (5-6, 3.13 ERA) goes for Washington; opposing him is Aaron Civale (2-5, 5.20 ERA). At 7:15 (the FOXSmoltzNauseaCast) in Camden Yards, the O's will try to take their 3rd straight from the Rangers. Michael Lorenzen (4-3, 3.04 ERA) starts for Texas; rookie Cade Povich (0-2, 4.14 ERA) makes just his fifth start for Baltimore.
And, at 3:07 pm at the Rodgers Centre, it's Cole vs. Bassitt.

Bassitt is the type of pitcher that will frustrate Yankee hitters. You could go three plate appearances and not see the same pitch twice. The Yankees have very few batters that can do the old "see the ball, hit the ball" thing.

I thought Cortez was pitching today. He is, you're right. I jumped one day ahead in the rotation.
Cortes is 4-6 on the season with a 3.40 ERA, and has pitched well in his last 3 starts. In 17 starts, he's pitched 100 2/3 innings, allowing 90 hits, 39 runs, 38 earned, 13 HR, 18 BB and has K'd 93. His WHIP on the season is 1.073. He's 2-2 with a 3.55 ERA in his career against the Jays in 5 starts and 6 relief appearnces. His WHIP against them is 1.184, and their quadruple slash line as a team against him is .231/.289/.455/.743. He last faced the Jays in a 4-2 win in Toronto mid-May last year, going 6 innings, allowing 5 hits, 2 runs, both earned, 1 HR, 1 BB with 6 K's.
Jays' lineup vs Cortes:
Bichette is 8-13 with a double, 2 solo HR, 1 BB, 4 K, Kiner-Falefa is 3-4 with a double and 2 RBI Guerrero is 2-12 with 2 RBI, 3 K and 1 GIDP Turner has never faced Cortes Springer is 2-10 with a double a solo HR and 2 K Schneider has never faced him Kirk is 0-10 with 4 K Clement is 0-4 Kiermaier is 3-6 with a triple, 3 RBI, 2 BB and 1 K
On the bench: Jansen is 1-7 with a double and 2 K, Varsho is 1-3 with 1 K.

Now comes The Saturday Leaders™ for June 29th:
Among AL hitters....
Gunner Henderson of the O's had a hot week and has retaken the MLB lead in bWAR with 6.1. Aaron Judge is 2nd at 5.9 bWAR. Juan Soto is 3rd in the AL at 4.4 bWAR, just ahead of both Jarren Duran of the Red Sox and Bobby Witt, Jr. of the Roayls. The Guardians' Steven Kwan is still not quite qualified, but he's the unofficial BAVG leader because if you add the 5 AB he needs, he'd still be at .362, well out front. Luis Regnifo of the Angels is similarly "asteriked", but my calculations show he has 2 more PA than he needs right now. Carlos Correa of the Twins is 3rd, and Witt is 4th. Judge is 5th. Both are batting .310, but Witt is nearly a full point ahead, .31045 to .30952. Soto's recent slump (4 for 30 in his last 10 games before last night) has dropped him to 7th at .302. Soto is still in front in OBA at .434, and Judge is 2nd at .431, but Kwan has cooled off a bit; he's a fraction of a point behind Judge if 5 PA are added to his denominator; both are listed at .431. Judge still leads in slugging at .701; Soto is 4th at .570, a fraction of a point ahead of Rafael Devers of the Sox. Henderton and Kyle Tucker of the Astros are between Judge and Soto Oviously, Judge is way out front in OPS at 1.131, and Soto is 2nd at 1.005, barely ahead of Henderson at 1.000 Witt is now all alone leading the AL with 84 games played. Anthony Volpe is now tied for 2nd with Julio Rodriguez of the Marines and J.J> Bleday of the A's at 83. Judge is in a 3-way tie for 5th with Maikel Garcia of the Royals, and Willi Castro of the Twins at 82. Soto and Gleyber Torres are in a 9-way tie for 8th at 81. Henderson has zoomed into the lead in leads in runs with 72, but Soto 2nd, 4 runs back. Judge is 3rd, 4 runs behind Soto. Volpe is 6th with 57. Volpe still leads the AL in both plate appearances and at-bats with 381 and 348. Soto is 6th in PA at 367, and JUdge is 8th at 361 Witt still leads in hits with 104, the Astros Jose' Altuve is 2nd at 1011. Volpe (93 hits) is 5th behind Adley Rutschman of the O's and Jarren Duran of the Red Sox. Judge is 8th at 91, and Soto is tied for 10th with Yordan Alvarez of the Astros at 88. Judge still leads in total bases with 206. Soto is 5th at 166, with Witt and Henderson, and now Jose Ramirez of the Guardians between them. Judge still leads with 23 doubles, but Durran is now tied with him Duran leads in triples at 10, and Witt has pulled ahead of Volpe with 8. Volpe is 3rd with 7. Judge still leads in HR with 30, 4 ahead of Cunnar Henderson, Soto is tied for 5th with Josh Naylor of the Guardians at 20 and Giancarlo Stanton is currently 8th with 18, but he won't be for long. Judge still leads in RBI with 79, Jose Ramirez of the Guardians is now 6 behind and Soto is back in 3rd at 60. Teams are clearly pitching around Soto; he's opened up a gap on Judge with 69 BB. JUdge is now 9 behind. Brent Rooker leads with 99 batter K's. Stanton sits 4th at 91, but his hamstring injury will keep him from winding up leading the league. Jose Caballero of the Rays still leads in steals with 24; Witt is 2 behind. Volpe has been stuck on 15 for a while and has now dropped into a tie for 10th with Ramirez. Vinnie Pasquantiino still leads with 9 sac flies; Verdugo is 3 behind, Soto is now in a 13-way tie for 7th with 4. Tyler Freeman and Andres Gimenez of the Guardians are tied for 1st in HBP at 12, along with Castro and Josh Smith of the Rangers. Judge is tied with Jusatin Turner of the Jays at 13 GIDP. Jose Trevino is in a 4-way tie for 3rd with Freeman and two others.

In the NL:
Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers leads in NL bWAR for hitters at 4.7. Ketel Marte of the D'backs is 2nd at 4.2 Ohtani's still leads in BAVG at .322, Jurickson Profar is still 2nd at .316. Profar leads in OBA at .411, now 6 points ahead of Mookie Betts of the Dodgers, and 8 points ahead of Ohtani. Ohtani's leads in Slugging at .640, 58 points ahead of Bryce Harper of the Phillies, who just went on the IL this week. Ohtani obviously leads OPS at 1.043; before he got hurt, Harper had climbed to 2nd at .981 Fernand Tatis, Jr of the Padres went on the IL this week with a stress reaction in his right femur, and that ends his quest to lead the NL in games played and at bats. His teammate Profar is now tied with fellow teammate Ha-Seong Kim for the lead in game with 84. Luis Arreaz of the Padres leads in at bats with 344, and Kyle Schwarber of the Phillies has the lead in plate appearances at 367, but not for long, as he joined Harper on the IL this week. Ohtani leads in runs scored at 65, Schwarber was 2nd at 60, but William Contreras of the Brewers should pass him before he gets off the IL, Contreras is 4 behind. Ohtani continues to lead in total bases as well with 201; 31 ahead of Marcel Ozuna of the Braves. Alex Bohm of the Phillies continues to lead in doubles with 28, four ahead of Ezequiel Tover of the Rockies and Franciso Lindor of the Mets. Corbin Caroll of the D'backs still leads the NL with 6 triples, one ahead of CJ Abrams of the Nationals. Ohtani leads in HR with 23, 2 ahead of Ozuna. Ozuna still leads with 73 RBI, 2 ahead of Bohm, and 6 ahead of Ohtani. Kyle Schwarber of the Phillies still leads in BB with 59; Betts is 12 behind him, tied with teammate Freddie Freeman and Harper. Elly de la Cruz of the Reds continues to be way out front with 37 steals, but not so much in K's with 100, just 1 ahead of the Cards' Nolan Gorman. Brandon Nimmo of the Mets continues to lead in HBP with 11, still one ahead Brendan Donovan of the Cards. Marte still leads in sac flies with 7, one ahead of Will Smith of the Dodgers, Bryson Stott of the Phillies and Joey Meneses of the Nationals. Manny Machado of the Padres leads the majors with 15 GIDP, in the NL, Arrez and Lourdes Gurriel of the Diamonbacks are tied with Judge and Tuner for 2nd in the MLB (and 2nd in the NL) at 13 GIDP.

Among AL pitchers:
Tyler Anderson of the Angels atill leads in pitcher bWAR with 4.0. Luis Gil has dropped completely out of the top 10. Tanner Houck of the Red Sox now leads in ERA at 2.18, 0.10 ahead of Corbin Burnes of the O's and 0.11 ahead of Seth Lugo of the Royals. At one time there were 3 Yankees in the top 10, but that has vanished with the team's lousy starting pitching the last 2-3 weeks. The Royals' Seth Lugo has the lead in wins with 10. Carols Rodon and Gil are still tied for 2nd with 9, along with Burnes, Grayson Rodriguez of the O's and Tarik Skubal of the Tigers. Nestor Cortes is in a 14-way tie for the league in starts with 17, and Carlos Rodon and Marcus Stroman are also in that 14-way tie. There are still 7 pitchers in the AL with 1 complete game, and three of them are shutouts. If the ties are ever broken, I'll let you know. Drew Gilber of the Marines has passed Lugo for the lead in innings pitche at 112 1/3. Lugo is at 110, amd Cortes is 6th at 100 2/3. Garrett Crochet of the White continues to lead in K's at 130, and leads in K's per 9 innings 12.40. Gil has dropped out of the top 10 in K's but is still 5th in K's per 9 at 10.40. Despite another bad start, this one against the Mets, Gil has regained the lead in H/9 innings from Ronel Blanco of the Astros; Gil is at 5.36, Blanco at 5.38. Logan Gilbert of the Mariners WHIP at 0.88; Skubal is 2nd at 0.938 and Crochet is 3rd at 0.943. Gil is out of the top 10 here as well Zac Eflin has requalified and has regained the lead in fewest walks per 9 at 0.72, George Kirby of the Marines is 2nd at 0.82, and is also 1st in K/BB ratio at 10.67. Eflin is 2nd thre at 9.86 Triston McKenzie of the lead with 49 walks allowed, Gil is 3rd at 45, and Marcus Stroman is 4th at 43. Emmanuel Clase of the Guardians still leads in saves with 25; Clay Holmes is now a distance 2nd at 19.
