Cole goes today, so I'm putting it in the win column! Providing Toronto doesn't score in the first inning...

Soto not in the starting lineup again. Of the 8 losses in the last 10 games Yanks have given up 7+ runs in all but one of those losses. I believe hey have scored over 4 runs per game during this stretch as well, which isnt great but its not terrible either I think ts safe to say that pitching, both starting and BP, has been the biggest problem

The Jays look to win the series by sending Kevin Gausman out in the series finale. The teams have exchanged one-sided wins through the first 3 games, and the Yanks will have to overcome Gausman's usual excellent pitching against them avoid losing their 5th series in a row. Gausman has pitched twice against the Yanks this season already. In the first game he was barely back from a pitching arm injury and he had nothing in the game at the Stadium in early April. The Yanks knocked him out after just 51 pitches in 1 1/3 innings, after he allowed 4 hits, 2 HR, 2 BB and 6 runs without striking out a batter. The Jays rallied late but the Yanks hung on for a 9-8 win. He was a lot healthier in the return match in Toronto, lasting 5 innings and 101 pitches, and back to his usual effectiveness against the Yanks, holding them to just 1 run in 5 innings, allowing 4 hits, 3 BB and striking out 6. He left with a 2-1 lead, but the Yanks rallied for 4 in the 9th to win, 6-4. After that start, Gausman was 0-2 with an ERA of 8.47.
Gausman has pitched much better since then, going 6-4 with a 3.48 ERA in 12 starts. In his last three, he's 1-2 with an ERA of 5.29, but those were against the Guardians and Red Sox, two teams whose lineups have been hitting much better lately than the Yankees offense. On the season, in 16 starts, he's 6-6 with a 4.26 ERA. In 86 2/3 innings, he's allowed 90 hits, 48 runs, 41 earned, 13 HR, and 20 BB with 84 K's. His WHIP on the season is an ordinary 1.269, quite a bit higher than his last four seasons with the Giants and Jays.
This will be 34th game and 28th start against the Yanks. He's 10-8 with a 3.22 ERA against them. In 164 2/3 innings, he's allowed them 157 hits, 64 runs, 59 earned, 17 HR, 48 BB with 162 strikeouts. His WHIP against New York is 1.245, and the team quadruple slash line against him is .24/.302/.375/.677. His starts against them this season I described above, but with the Jays the last two seasons, he's been overpowering against the Yanks: 7 starts, 3-1, 1.17 ERA, 46 innings, 30 hits, just 6 runs, all earned, 3 HR, 12 BB and 59 K's. His WHIP in those 7 starts is a tiny 0.91.
Repertoire: In contrast to several pitchers they faced the last week or two, Gausman is a four-pitch righty: fastball, sinker, slider, splitter. The splitter is the key pitch, working off the FB to get swings and misses, especially to finish off hitters. His FB gets more "rise" than average, and considerably better than average "run". His splitter gets well above average drop, but is elite in terms of breaking arm side into righties and away from lefties. His sinker gets much less movement in both directions than average. The slider gets much less drop than average and almost no horizontal break, working more like a cutter. His FB velocity used to be elite; now it's average. Same thing for spin rate on the FB and extension. In terms of run values, his FB and splitter have carried him the last 3 seasons; they were a combine plus 33 runs in 2021, 16 runs in 2022, and plus 20 runs in 2023. This year all 4 of his pitches have had small negative run values so far (-1 or -2 runs for each). The pitch mix so far this season: he's using the splitter a bit less, and the sinker a bit more than last year: FB averaging 94 about 52% of the time, splitter 85-6 about 34%, slider 83 about 9%, and sinker 93-4 about 5% of the time.

Playing the name game...again, played these names twice already: 113 Kevins in MLB history. Kevin Brown is the best of them at nearly 70 bWAR, making 6 All-Star teams, and getting Cy Young votes in 5 seasons. He looks like a marginal case for the Hall of Fame, with 3 of his ten best comps already in, but the JAWS system ranks him 33rd all-time for starting pitchers, and 80% of the pitchers near him on the JAWS list are in the Hall. Yankees fans would rather forget Brown's time with the team.

Yesterday, the Yanks' offense never got off the ground against Bassitt, who shut them down on 1 run iu 6 innings. The Jays got 2 in the 1st, 1 in the 4th and put the game away off Bickford and Ferguson with a 5-run 6th, capped off by 3 run double by Guerrero. The loss was the Yanks 5th in the last 6 games, and 10th in the last 13. It dropped them back to 21 games over .500 at 53-32, and it dropped them out of even a tie for first for the first time in over 6 weeks.
In other AL East action...The O's got a grand slam from Kerston Hjerstad in the fifth to take a 5-2 lead, then held on to beat the Rangers 5-4. The Rangers left the bases loaded in the 9th when Kimbrel got Adolis Garcia to fly out to right to end it. The win was the O's 4th straight after 5 straight losses. For the Rangers, it was their 6th loss in a row. The Padres demolished the Red Sox for the 2nd straight day, 11-1. Manny Machado hit 2 HR and drove in 5,, while Mike King through 6 innings of 1-run ball, striking out 6 for his 6th win, lowering his ERA to 3.51 on the season. The Nats sent 10 men to the plate in a 6-run 7th that broke open a 2-1 game, and went on to beat the Rays 8-1. Jake Irving threw 6 innings of 1-hit, 1-run ball for his 6th win, and 5 different Nats had 2 or more hits.
The Yanks begin play today in 2nd for the first time since May 15th, 1 game back of the Orioles. The Sox remain 8 1/2 back of the Yanks, the Rays stayed 11 back and the Jays gained a game on them and are now 13 1/2 back.
Elsewhere in the AL East today, At 1:35 in Fenway Park, the Padres try to complete a sweep of the Red Sos. Knuckleballer Matt Waldron (5-6, 3.43 ERA) goes for SD. The Red Sox will be giving Josh Winckowski (1-1, 3.26 ERA) his 4th start this season. At 1:40 pm in the InsaneDome™, the Nats and Jays play the rubber game of their series. Pat Corbin (1-7, 5.46 ERA) has been hit hard most of this season, but he's pitched well in his last 3 starts and is starting for Washington. Taj Bradley (2-4, 3.81 ERA) throws for Tampa, he's pitched four solid games in a row coming in. The Rangers and O's play the ESPN SundayNightAnnoyingCast game at 7:10 pm in Camden Yards. Ex-Yankee Andrew Heaney (2-9, 4.17 ERA) starts for Texas. Cole Irvin (6-4, 3.74 ERA) has been hit hard his last 3 games, but he goes for the O's.
And, in about 20 minutes, at the Rodgers Centre, it's Cole vs. Gausman.
The pre-game stuff if uploaded. I'll post the rest of The Sunday Standings™ as we go along in the game thread. See you all then.
