Verdugo and LeMahieu are killing this lineup, and Volpe has fallen off a cliff. Ben Rice had two RBI, Judge continues to carry the load since April ended.

Volpe...take one for the team if you can!
Slider on the outside corner, takes, 0-1 Slider above middle, swung on and missed, 0-2 Slider at the bottom, popped to short, De La Cruz catches, game over. Game dies one batter short of Soto, who was 1-2 vs. Diaz, and the 1 hit was a 3-run HR.
Yanks lose, 5-4, their 11th loss in their last 15 games. They drop back to 21 over .500 at 54-33.

Kay: The Yankee rally falls one run short. What, rally… ? They laid an egg 🥚 in the ninth… He meant they were down 5-0, and rallied back to 5-4. But you knew that.

Yanks might lose a game to the division tonight. Sox beat the Marlins; they're now 7 1/2 back of the Yanks again. Jays beat the Astros 7-6, they're now 14 back of the Yankees now. The Rays lead the Royals 1-0 in the 5th, game being delayed by rain. IOf that score holds, they're 10 back of the Yanks. O's-M's scoreless in the 2nd. If the O's win, they move a game ahead of the Yanks again.

didn't come in until the 6th but looks like gil got off to a strong start but then the wheels came off in the 4th & 5th. suddenly he got very wild - couldn't find the plate and started hiting people. ferguson has been god awful.. the rest of the pen delivered 4 innings of 1-hit ball w weaver looking particularly sharp. unfortunately he's down for a couple days.
outside of judge & rice, offense non-existent. DJ had had a good weekend but nothing to show today. volpe terrible lately. swinging more like the volpe of last year as opposed to volpe we saw for the 1st 2 months.
feel privileged to be watching judge. we haven't seen anyone perform on this level since bonds and judge is doing it w/o steroids. amazing ...

They are 8-7 since the Yankees got their 50th win while the yankees are 4-11. In their last 10 the Orioles are 4-6 to the Yankees 3-7. So it's still right there for the Yankees, but the Orioles are not going to just keep playing .500 or so for 15 game stretches very often. Need to pile up some wins.

Having lost this game by a run, the Yanks might have also blown their chance to win the series.
Tomorrow at 7:07 on (UDH!), the Prime Delayed Video Defame of the Week, the Reds send deceptive lefty Andrew Abbott (7-6 3.43 ERA) out to start. He's pitched OK his last 5 starts, pitching between 5 and 6 innings in all 5 and giving 1 to 3 runs in all 5. He's 4-1 with a 3.75 ERA in those starts. Yanks will send Carlos Rodon out there, probably to take another beating. He's been horrendous his last 3 starts, burying the Yanks early in each game. He's gone from 9-2, 2.93 ERA to 9-5, 4.42 ERA in one doggone hurry. Polite golf clap for staying for the last 2 outs in the 5th and running his pitchcount to 107 after giving up 8 runs and 2 three-run HRs to Springer before the 2nd inning was over against the Jays in his last start.
OK, one last check of notifications...

Or tread water themselves until they can get things squared away. In such circumstances, considering the very hot start (70 games or so), 6-9 is good enough, 4-11 isn't.

It's not like Boone couldn't see it coming.

Yep even 6-9 would have been guaranteed division lead right now. It isn't so much where the lead in the division is at the moment. They're getting blown out in too many games. They have to tread water by winning close games, especially against teams that aren't elite, to tread water until the major issues in the rotation and the lineup can be solved.

These Reds are a dangerous bunch with the young talent they have. They tend to be inconsistent, but they’re not to be trifled with…
