I saw that coming. Pay attention, Grisham…

Candelario takes a marginal FB at the very top of the zone, called a strike, <5% on Gameday FB outside at the top, 1-1 Slurve low in the zone away, hit hard up the middle for a single. Grisham takes his time going after it, and then misplays it, rolling up his arm, and allows Candelario to get to 2nd. Single, E-8.

And I used to watch outfielder very closely running bases for crap like that, too…

In the old days Grishom would find his ass on the bench or sent to the minors. Just a poor look especially from a guy who is a poor hitter.

Steer foul pops a cutter out of play near the Yankee dugout, 0-1 Fouls off a FB inside middle Swings over a curve going well low on the outer half, K, inning over. Bottom 9, 8-4 Reds. Let's see who tries to close for the Reds, Wilson or Sims.
Yanks send up Cabrera, Grisham and Rice, two lefties and Cabrera, so maybe Wilson stays in. He threw 20 pitches in the 8th, but also 3 last night, so I dunno.

Nope, a different lefty, Sam Moll, will pitch the 9th. DJ will PH for Cabrera. Jones probably for Grisham. We'll see about Rice.

DJ... Takes a FB well inside at the knees, 1-0 FB misses inside 2-3 inches, called a strike anyway. Bad call. 0% on Gameday, missing by 3 inches. Changes the whole at bat. Sinker outside middle taken, 1-2 Makeup call, Sweeper hits the outer half above the knees, not called, 2-2. 100% on Gameday FB inside, 3-2 Sinker down and in, tries to inside out it, old-style, but the soft looper goes right to India for the 1st out.

J.D. Davis PH for Grisham, not Jones. Forgot about him. Takes a slider waist high, inner 3rd, 0-1 FB to the same spot, fouled off, 0-2 Takes a waist high FB on the outer half, ꓘ. 2 down. Davis complained, but it was clearly a strike.

Talk about going down without a fight.

Rice takes a slider that grazes the outside corner, 0-1 Takes another one hanging above middle, 0-2 A 3rd slider is well outside and Rice nearly chases, the 3rd base ump says no swing. FB outside, 2-2 Completely frozen by a FB just outside middle middle, ꓘ, game over. Yanks lose 8-4, get swept by the Reds, and have now not won a series in any of the last 6. They drop to 18 games over .500 at 54-36 for the first time since May 28th, and have now lost 13 of 17. They lose another 1/2 game (for now) to the everyone but the Jays, who lost to the Astros, 5-3. The Marlins failed to score the ghost runner in the 19th, and that game is still 2-2, top 11.

Maybe that 3rd strike is why the Yanks have been reluctant to play Rice vs. lefties. I'd say they have to let him play every day, but: 1) They're losing too often to waste at bats on "learning experience" and 2) Rizzo gets the position back in about 4 weeks anyway, and Stanton isn't losing the DH spot when he's back, either.

This team has absolutely no life right now. It’s tough to watch but indicative of the attitude of this manager and general manager.

The Yanks are not hitting and they're not pitching. It's awfully hard to win more than 1/3 of your games if your hitting and pitching tank at the same time.
The defense has generally been solid, but when you're not hitting or pitching, you can't get those runs back with the gloves. Boone shook up the lineup tooday, but they didn't score until they were already down 5. The only good signs today were the Rice and Wells HRs, and Verdugo getting three hits, but again, all that started after they were down 5.
The starting pitching is burying them early, burdened by an offense that can't break through early as it was doing the first 72 games. And the bullpen is floundering as well. It's not realistic to expect a manager/pitching coach/hitting coach to fix 3 holes in the rotation, 3-4 more in the pen, and 4-5 more in the lineup, all at the same time. At that point, there's nothing to do but wait, and hope some spark turns them around as a group.
Meanwhile, the Yanks descend to the team I expected them to be before the season; 85-90 wins. Look, I'm not right all the time, and I sure hope these guys prove me wrong. The great start means they still have a great chance to win 90-95 and make the playoffs but they're back down to .600 now (97 wins), Baltimore is staring to open a lead, the Red Sox are climbing right up their butts with a chance to sweep this weekend and leave the Bronx just 2 1/2 back of the Yanks after trailing them by 14 full games just 3 1/2 weeks ago, and the Rays are gaining ground pretty fast as well.
I spent the first 70 game or so waiting for the other shoe to drop on this team, and then I started wondering if it never would, if this was some kind of magic season. Well, the baseball season is long, long, LONG, and many more times than not, things work out the way they should. Nobody saw this team as a 100-win team before the season, and right now, they're proving they aren't. Can they turn it around and get hot again? Sure they can, but that's not the way to bet.

Grisham takes things calmly out there, usually to his advantage, but that was a bit too relaxed. Torres-like, in fact.

I never thought they were as good as the start. A very top heavy lineup and pitching performing way over their heads. The injuries and dreadful lack of depth has lead to this horrible stretch. I don’t expect too much to change in the near future.
