Yesterday, Marcus Stroman couldn't stop making big mistakes, giving up 3 HRs and putting the Yanks in another big hole, down 5-0 before they took him out. The Yanks had two-run HRs from Wells and Rice, but there was a 3 run triple from Fraley in between and the Yanks were never really in the game after the 5th, losing 8-4. The loss gave the Reds the series sweep and dropped the Yanks back to 18 games over .500 for the first time since late May. They reach the 90-game mark of the season at exactly .600, 54-36, but have lost 13 of 17, as mentioned above.
In other AL East action, the Astros completed taking 3 of 4 from the Jays with a 5-3 win in Toronto. Mauricia Dubon's single in the 5th broke a 3-3 tie and Jeremy Pena tacked on a solo HR in the 7th. Framber Valdez improved to 7-5 despite giving up 3 in the first, and shut down the Jays for 5 innings after, long enough for the Astros to take the lead. Josh Hader gave up a leadoff single in the 9th, but got a double play grounder and a lineout to wrap up his 14th save. The Red Sox completed a 3-game sweep by outlasting the dreadful Marlins in Miami. The game was 2-2 after 9 innings. Both teams failed to plate the ghost runner in the 10th, and both scored 2 in the 11th. The Sox got two again in the 12th on an RBI grounder and a RBI double, and the Marlins got one home in their half on a sac fly, but ex-Yankee Greg Weissert got two deep flies to center around a single that put the tying run at 2nd with two outs, recording his first major league save in Boston's 6-5 win. In Seattle, the O's got 2 in the 3rd, but the Mariners tied it with 2 in the 5th and broke the game open with a 5-run 7th on a 3-run double by J.P. Crawford and a 2-run HR by Mitch Garver, and salvaged the final game of the series against Baltimore, 7-3. The O's got a walk and a hit in the 9th, but never really challenged M's closer Andres Munoz, who finished things off in a non-save situation. Ryan Stanek got his 6th win of the season in relief with a scoreless 7th inning. In KC, the Rays scored 2 in the 1st and the Royals never caught up and both teams kept trading blows; the Rays scoring in 6 innings, the Royals in 5, but the Rays took the rubber game and the series 10-8 in KC. The Rays piled up 16 hits, 3 each from Brandon Lowe and Johnny DeLuca, while Bobby Witt, Jr. had 3 hits including a HR to raise his season's AVG to .319. Zack Eflin evened his record at 5-5 with a very cheap W, giving up 7 hits and 5 earned runs in 5 innings as his offense bailed him out repeatedly. Pete Fairbanks got his 14th save despite givng up that solo HR to Witt in the 9th.

Playing the name game...Another boys' name gaining popularity in the last 30 years, there have been 9 Tanners in MLB history, none starting before 2010. Of these the best was Tanner Roark, a starting pitcher for 4 major league teams in the last 11 years who won 60 games for the Nats in his six years in Washington. Houck has a solid chance to become the most valuable of all of them, but so does Tanner Bibee, the Guardians starting pitcher. There are 2 playes with last name Tanner, Chuck and his son Bruce. Chuck is most famous for managing the "We Are Family" Pirates to the title in 1979.
Tanner is the 3rd and best of the MLB players named Houck. The other two are a pitcher, Bryce Houck, who scattered four seasons in the American and Federal Legaues in the 1910's, and the wonderfully named Sadie Houck, a shortstop who played eight seasons in the National League and American Association between 1879 and 1888. According to Wikipedia, Sadie got himself on some sort of "blacklist" in late 1881 and for all of 1882 for being a heavy drinker. I've been a baseball fan for 57 years now, and I don't remember ever hearing about an alcoholism blacklist in 19th century MLB. Baseball has had its share of alcoholics, (Ed Delahanty and Hack Wilson are supposedly two of them, and C.C. Sabathia checked himself into a rehab for alcoholics in 2015), but I never heard of an organized blacklisting of players for that offense/illness before. Maybe some of you have.
I know it doesn't count, but the legendary Bad News Bears team had a "Tanner" on their squad. But that team hated the Yankees.

The Yanks' loss caused them to drop another game to the Sox and Rays, but at least the O's didn't move further ahead. They come into the Sox series 2 behind Baltimore, just 5 1/2 ahead of the Sox and just 9 ahead of the Rays. The Jays stayed 14 games back.
Elsewhere in the AL East today, the Rays conintue their heartland road trip, starting a 4-game series in Texas against the Rangers at 8:05 pm. Coming in, the Rays have won 10 of 14, while the defending champ Rangers have lost 8 of 10, falling into 3rd in the West. Shane Baz, finally healthy, comes off the IL nearly two full seasons after he last pitched in the majors, and starts for Tampa. Michael Lorenzen (4-4, 3.40 ERA) goes for Texas, trying to bounce back from a bad start against the Orioles last time out. The Orioles continue their West Coast swing with 3 games in Oakland against the A's at 9:40 pm in the Coliseum. The O's have won 6 of their last 8, while the A's have suddenly won 3 in a row after a two month long stretch of .250 baseball (13-39). Surprise retread Albert Suarez (4-2, 2.43 ERA) will try to make it 2 good starts in a row; he shut out the Rangers for six inning in his last start. Rookie Hogan Harris (1-2, 3.18 ERA) starts for the A's; he got hit in his last start against the D'backs, giving up 10 hits and 3 runs in 3 1/3 innings. Finally, also at 9:40 pm, the Jays open a 3-game series in T-Mbile Park against the Mariners. Despite splitting with the Yanks last weekend, the Jays have lost 12 of their last 16, while the M's have also struggled lately, losing 10 of 14, and have blown all but 2 games of the 7 1/2 game lead they had on Houston five weeks ago. Kevin Gausman (6-7, 4.75 ERA) will try to turn things around; in his last 4 starts, he's allowed 17 earned runs in 21 1/3 innings, losing 3 of the 4. Luis Castillo (6-9, 3.87 ERA) with throw for the M's. He too has struggled lately, going 1-3 in his last 5 starts with an ERA of 6.49.
And, at 7:07 pm at the Stadium, it's Houck vs. Cortes.
Preview verbiage spewed, it's time to make dinner. See you all in about 70 minutes.

nestor didn't see the redsox last time around so back in the friendly confines of YS, need nestor to right the ship. let's see how he & wells fare against the sox running game. of course the best defense is to not let anyone on.
like rice leading off. keep running him out there until either he fails or volpe makes a compelling case to get his job back. need 4 guys to step up - verdugo, torres, volpe & DJ. verdugo coming off a 3-hit game w 2 doubles. after a 7-17, gleyber was hitless in the next 2. DJ flat out needs to drive the ball. volpe 6-47 (that's .125 w a .125 OBP - zero walks). he needs to rediscover what he was ding when he was successful earlier in the season.
as is the case against boston, blacked out on mlb.tv so will be listening to suzyn.

I did it again! My phone is at 6%, so I’ll start the game on the charger for about 3 innings. I hope I regret it…as we pile up the runs on our side of the scoreboard…

Congratulations to Inger. I'll be joining you at 50,000 next week. OK, OK, maye in 2026. Unless I find something else to do with my life. Or the Yanks keep losing 3 of every 4 games they play.
