Playing the name game...Josh is not a modern name, that's for sure. There have been almost 100 MLB players named Josh, and while the greatest baseball player named Josh was almost certainly Negro League superstar Josh Gibson, the greatest MLB player named Josh is Josh Donaldson, 33rd all-time in 3rd base bWAR, won an MVP award, and finished in the top 5 two more times in a period of 4 years. Josh Beckett and Josh Hamilton were also superstars at one point of their careers, but those were cut short by injury/addiction problems, so Donaldson has more WAR than either. As for Winckowski, take your best guess as to wherther there are any other MLB players with that last name (Narrator: no).

Gerrit Cole makes his 4th start for the Yanks this season after coming off the IL because of elbow inflammation and edema suffered late in spring training. The Mets batted him around like a pinata two starts ago, but he recovered to throw 5 strong innings against the Jays in Toronto for a win. The Yanks haven't won since. On the season, he's 1-1 in 3 starts, with an ERA of 6.23. In 13 innings, he's allowed 13 hits, 9 runs, all earned, 4 HR and 6 BB, with 11 K. Almost all the damage came in the Mets game. His WHIP on the is a poor 1.462.
This is Cole's 18th career start against Boston, and thanks to Rafael Devers, they've treated him roughly. He's 7-5 vs. Boston, but his 4.68 ERA against them is higher than any team except for the Dodgers and Mets. In 98 innings, he's allowed 93 hits, 52 runs, 51 earned, 22 HR, and 24 BB, with 120 K's. The K rate is good, the walk rate is good; the Sox have been beating him by hitting HRs. Lots of HRs. His WHIP against Boston is a solid 1.194, and the Sox' team quadruple slash line against Cole is .250/.297/.476/.773. He made 2 starts against them in his Cy Young season last year, and lost both, 2 of the 4 losses he suffered for the season. He took a tough loss in a 3-2 game at the Stadium in June, allowing just 2 runs in 6 innings, on 7 hits, 1 BB and 1 HR with 6 K's. The Sox belted him around when they saw him again at the Stadium in August, scoring 6 runs on 7 hits, 1 BB and HR in just 4 innings, in an 8-1 Sox rout of the Yanks.

Put Verdugo to try and get him going. What do they have to lose except more games? Or just keep doing the same shit everyday. OK, so then you have 3 lefties in a row, Judge moves down a spot and gets less abs. Soto has less protection. I see nothing wrong with leading of with Soto who has the 2nd highest OBP (to Judge) in the MLB ... In fact I have no problem with Soto Judge 1 and 2 for now until someone steps According to his Splits ... Gleyber is at his best batting 3rd with an .840 OPS and the second most games of his career there. He's always been terrible batting 4th !!!!!! Arguably the worst lineup position in his career . 231 .291 .391 .683 Also 4th has been the worst spot in the Batting order for verdugo as well ....SO why the hell would you try to forc Gelyber and Verdugo into the 4 hole knowing full well that it is the worst spot in the Batting for both. Gelyber also excels in the 5th spot and Verdugo the 7th ... This shit shouldn't be that hard to figure out ... especially for a team that prides itslef on analytics!?!?!?

Yesterday, the Yanks dropped their 4th in row in disastrous and deeply disturbing fashion. Handed a 3-run rally by the Sox on 3 walks, 2 infield hits, and a bothch DP on a throwing error, Nestor Cortes pitched 6 tough innings of 1-run ball, Luke Weaver pitched 2 tough scoreless innings, working out of a big jam in the 8th, and Clay Holmes got the count to 0-2 on Smith...before he singled up the middle. And Clay Holmes got the count to 0-2 on Yoshida, before Yoshida worked him for 5 pitches, and then Holmes threw a sinker in just about the only place Yoshida could kill it, and he tied it with a back-breaking 2-run HR. In the 9th, the Yanks went meekly. In the 10th, for no reason I can fathom, with the ghost runner on 2nd, Tommy Kahnle gave Rafaela two straight fastballs to start, the 2nd one was almost right down the middle and he crushed it into Monument Park. Soto didn't go down fighting, getting a single, but Judge and Verdugo popped up and Cabrera grounded out to 1st and that was it. Oh, there was stupid baserunning (both DJ and Volpe in the 3rd and poor defensive choices (Wells not taking the sure out at 1st in the 8th and putting the tying run on base), but the Sox tried to give a struggling Yankee team a win, and they flatulated it right back to Boston, blowng a much-needed great 8 innings of pitches by Cortes and Weaver. The win was the Sox' 5th in a row, and 13th in their last 17 games; the loss was the Yanks 14th in their last 18, dropping them to 18 games over .500 at 54-36. Infuriating.
In other AL East action, Mike Lorenzen and 4 relievers shut out the Rays on 3 hits in the first game of a series in Texas. Corey Seager 2 run single and Nathaniel Lowe's RBI single, all in the 3rd inning, were the only runs of the game. Shane Bax, in his first game in the majors in almost 2 years, made it through six innings for the Rays, allowing 7 hits, 1 BB, all 3 runs and struck out 6. The O's got one in the first on a steal of 3rd and a throwing error, and a RBI double in a bases loaded walk in the 2nd, and Albert Suarez and three relievers made it stand up for a 3-2 win in the first game of a series in Oaklan. Suarez improved to 5-2 and Craig Kimbrel struck out 2 in a 1-2-3 9th for his 22nd save. Ex-Yankee Miguel Andujar got his 4th HR of the season in the 1st, a solo shot off of Suarez. The win was the O's 7th in 9 games, while Oakland's loss was their 40th in their last 53 games. The Mariners got a 2-run double in the 3rd from Luke Raley, and Luis Castillo and 3 relievers made it stand up, allowing just 2 hits, 1 run and strking out 11 Jays, in a series opening 2-1 win in Seattle. Kevin Gausman pitched well in the loss, and Andres Munoz had a 1-2-3 9th for his 14th save. The loss was the Jays 5th in 6 games, and 15th in their last 19.
The Yanks loss caused them to drop another game to the O's and Sox, but not to the Rays and Jays. They're now 3 behind Baltimore, just 4 1/2 up on Boston, and remain 9 ahead of the Rays and 14 ahead of the Jays.

Elsewhere in the AL East today, the Rays and Rangers play the middle game of their series in Arlington at 4:05 pm. Taj Bradley, (3-4, 3.42 ERA) starts for the Rays. He's thrown five good games in a row since the O's beat the tar out of him on June 1st. Andrew Heaney (3-9, 4.04 ERA) starts for the Rangers, Heaney leads the AL in losses, but hasn't been all that bad, allowing 3 runs or less in 14 of his 17 starts. The O's and A's play their 2nd game at 4:07 in the Coliseum. Rookie Cade Povich (1-2, 4.05 ERA) starts for the Orioles, he has an ERA of 2.53 since getting hit hard in his first MLB start. Ex-Yankee farmhand Luis Medina (1-3, 4.80 ERA) throws for Oakland. He's alternated good and bad starts in his last 4 games. The Blue Jays and Mariners play their middle game in Seattle at 4:10 pm. Rookie Yasiel Rodriguez (0-3, 4.63 ERA) is still looking for his first MLB win in his 7th start for Toronto. Opposing him is rookie Emerson Hancock (3-3, 4.79 ERA), he had a good start last time out against the White Sox after the Braves and Twins knocked him around the two starts before.
And, in 35 minutes from now at the Stadium, it's Winckowski vs. Cole.

Judge still leads in total bases with 219 and has an outside shot of being the first player MLB player to get to 400 total bases in a season since 2001. Soto is first in BB with 76, he now has a comforable lead even over Judge at 63. Soto is on pace to draw 137 walks now, which wouldn't be his career high; he had 145 in 2021. In the NL:
Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers leads the NL in bWAR at 4.8. Ketel Marte of the D'backs is still 2nd, at 4.4 Christian Yelich of the Brewers finally has enough plate appearances, and has taken over the NL lead in BAVG at .324. Ohtani's still leads in slugging at .625, and Bryce Harper of the Phillies is back off the IL and had a surge that leaves him 2nd at the moment at .582. Ohtani and Harper are also 1-2 in OPS; 1.020 for Ohtani and 0.981 for Harper. Fernand Tatis, Jr of the Padres got injured again, so the NL lead in games played has fallen to his teammates Profar and Ha-Seong Kim. They're also tied with Witt for the MLB lead. Arraez leads in at bats with 370, 13 ahead of Ezequiel Tovar of the Rockies, but Ohtani leads in PA with 393, 1 ahead of Arraez. Arraez still leads in hits with 116, 10 ahead of Ohtani. Ohtani still leads in runs scored with 70, 10 ahead of William Contreras of the Brewers, Elly De La Cruz of the Reds, and Kyle Schwarber of the Phillies, who's about to fall out of that tie because he's also on the Il. Among AL pitchers:
Seth Lugo of the Royals has regained the AL lead in bWAR for pirchers at 4.0. No Yankees are in the top 10 anymore. O's ace Corbin Burns got hit pretty hard by Seattle on Thursday and dropped out of the lead in ERA, falling to 2nd at 2.32. Lugo is back in 1st at 2.17. At one point the Yanks had 4 pitchers in the top 11. Now they have none Lugo still leads in wins with 11. Abreu has 42 and in a 5-way tie for 2nd. Nestor Cortes is in a 3-way tie for the lead in games started a 19, togeher with Luis Castillo of the Mariners and Cole Ragana of the Royals. There are now 8 pitchers in the AL with 1 complete game, and four of them are shutouts. If the ties are ever broken, I'll let you know. Lugo has 116 innings pitched Cortes is tied for 5th with his opponent last night, Tanner Houck of the Red Sox, both have 111. In between are Burnes at 112 2/3 and Castillo at 111 1/3. Zac Eflin of the Rays leads in BB per 9 innings at 0.78, just ahead of George Kirby of the Mariners at 0.85 Kirby still leads in K/BB ratio at 10.10, and Eflin is now 2nd at 9.00. He's now 3rd in the league, behind Craig Kimbrel who's an appropriate 3 saves ahead (bccause the O's are now 3 games ahead of the Yanks in the standings).

There's only one Iron Horse and his name is Lou Gehrig. With that said... I hope he hits the cover off the ball, but playing Grisham everyday is a repeat of when the Yankees used to play Hicks everyday.
Note to the Yankees: The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome.

Torres out, Carbrera in. Soto at DH. Volpe fifth. I know it's a day after a night game, but I'd put Wells at DH, this team is desperate for offense. I agree. But it looks like Iron Horse Grisham has to be in the lineup everyday.
