Gonzalez goes after a 1st pitch change inside middle, rolls it over to DJ at 3rd, takes his time, makes sure of the catch and throw and gets him by plenty. Game over, Yanks win 14-4, coming back off the canvas after last night's awful collapse loss.
Yanks break the 4-game losing streak, win just their 5th game in the last 19, move back to 19 games over .500 at 55-36. They'll try win their first series since they took 3 from the Royals in KC just over 3 weeks ago. They gain a game on the Sox, pushing them back to 4 1/2 behind, and for the moment, gain a game on the other 3 East teams.

rice 1st rookie to hit 3 HRs in a game. sounds like he's gonna get gatoraded. definitely potg. verdugo & ocab also among the many hitting stars. dj also 2 hits & 2 rbi.
cole eh but great job by hill & maciekewski restoring order and pitching 4.2 scoreless. magic man 4Ks during his stint. happiness reigns at least for a day in yankeeland.

Sox probably win the game here, scoring 3, and lead 3-1 going bottom 3rd. uh yeah ...
calling a 3-1 game after 2 1/2 is well ...

For one day, we can forget all the Yankees problems and just enjoy a blow out victory.

Stars of the game... Honorable mention to Volpe for the game tying double in the 7-run 5th, and to DJ for waking up out of his offensive coma with two RBI singles, one that made it 7-4 and another than made it 11-4, and to Verdugo for the big game-tying 2-run HR lifting a lot of gloom after Cole gave up 3 runs with some bad and one or two stupid pitches in the 3-run 3rd; it kept the team from going into "here we go again" mode. Great to have you back, Alex. Please stay with us a while.
3rd star: Austin Wells...you can argue if you want, but he came off the bench to pinch hit for Trevino with a much needed rally hanging in the balance, worked the count to 2-2, had a great take on a slider that just missed low and away, had two excellent spoils on a big breaking slider on the back door and a FB on the inside corner to try to jam him and finally walked in a run with another great take on another backdoor slider that missed outside by 2-3 inches, giving the Yanks the lead for good. I think that at bat was a great one by essentially a rookie in a clutch spot, with the team struggling like crazy for every win, and opened the floodgates for all the good hitting that followied.
2nd star: The shock relief effort of Tim Hill, who came in for Cole in the 5th right after getting burned on a stupid FB to his nemesis Devers who crushed it to give the Sox the lead back after the Yanks tied it in the 3rd. Hill and Maciejewski did a great job throwing 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, getting the "good relievers" a day off. Hill EARNED the W with 2 2/3 innings of hitless, scoreless relief, striking out 1.
1st star: Maybe the last two HR were not in "high leverage", but the first one game the Yanks an immediate lead in the 1st, giving a small, immediate lift after the doom and gloom after last night's absolute crusher. The 2nd HR broke the game open for good in the 5th, and the last one was the cherry on top of the sundae. Take a curtain call, young Mr. Rice. Given his superior plate discipline, this rookie has a chance to be much more than another Kevin Maas, Dan Pasqua or Shane Spencer.

Point taken, but given what's been going on with this team lately, I'm willing to bet real money I wasn't the only one thinking that, bump.

Negative comments re players (Verdugo, Cabrera, DJ) pre-game and outcome predictions during the game often come back to bite.
