What I want to know is ... How does that idiot Boone bat a rookie leadoff ?!?!?! I wonder if he's going to bench Rice for Jones or Davis in the near future?

It is a small sample size but he does look like he's comfortable in the batters box and also appears to be disciplined. He's getting enough ABs where the league will start to develop a book on him. I haven't broken down his abs to determine if he has any holes in his swing. If there are, pitchers will try to exploit them and he will have to make adjustments. He does look the part, and by all accounts he's pretty smart. If he becomes a solid player it certainly helps this roster quite a bit. He's still learning the position but appears athletic enough to do a good job. A corner infielder who makes hard contact and has power on a cheap contract allows us to address other more pressing needs while allowing us to move on from an aging in decline Rizzo.

Speaking of Rice, thought it might be fun to look at his prospect writeup on MLB.Com. I know Qwik has a scout he likes better but can't recall who it is. I didn't realize Rice is 25 years old, thought he was younger. MLB has him as the 12 prospect in our org and seem to like his bat but not his glove or arm.
Scouting grades: Hit: 55 | Power: 50 | Run: 30 | Arm: 40 | Field: 45 | Overall: 45
After starring in baseball and hockey as a Massachusetts high schooler, Rice played just 30 games in three years at Dartmouth because the pandemic truncated the 2020 season and cancelled the 2021 Ivy League season. The Yankees scouted him in summer ball both years before selecting him in the 12th round of the 2021 Draft. He didn't distinguish himself as a pro until last season, when he batted .324/.434/.615 with 20 homers in 73 games between three levels despite missing May and June with an oblique injury.
Rice did a better job of managing the strike zone and driving the ball in the air last year, leading to a higher consistency and quality of contact. He has a compact left-handed stroke with plenty of bat speed and strength, though his hitting ability stands out more than his raw power. He has been old for most of his leagues and has struggled mightily against southpaws, so evaluators aren't quite sure what to make of his 2023 performance or his chances to be more than a platoon player.
Rice also gets mixed reviews as a catcher. He moves well behind the plate, but his receiving and blocking skills draw grades ranging from below-average to plus and his lack of arm strength allowed opponents to steal 62 bases in 70 attempts (89 percent) in just 37 games last year. His well below-average speed would limit to him to first base and DH if he can't make it as a backstop.

Another thing...you can argue, but "probably" is not really a "call", either. You want call it a call, that's OK with me. But I rarely make "calls" and even when I lean one way and it happens, I don't call it a "call", as anyone who spent time with me in the chat room at the old place will confirm. hmm ok "probably" is not really a "call". that's a fine line ... yeah they've been going through rough times, but pretty sure judge, soto, boone, the players, paulie, girardi, the bat boy (and the sox for that matter) didn't think the sox "probably" had a "won" game, 3-1 heading into the bottom of the third. they certainly weren't ready to put another L in the loss column. not calling you one but that's the type of thing a less knowledgeable fan would say. That's fair, bump.
