Meredith I don't think the Yanks want Gerrit Cole to be "Gerrit Cole against the Red Sox", because against the Res Sox, especially Rafael Devers, he's a mediocre starter. What they need is "Typical Gerrit Cole, but this time AGAINST the Red Sox and Devers".

FB outside above the waist but closer to the zone, also 94, 2-0
Cutter hits the outer edge of the zone above the waist, 2-1
FB tails just outside, Duran a bit late, fouled it off down the left side, 2-2
Slider at the knees in the middle, bounced fouled.
FB above middle pulled sharply to the right side, Cabrera moves left, fields, throws him out, 1 down.

Last night, Paulie they lost on fundamentals, but also because both Homes and Kahnle made craptastic pitches to two hitters who hit two-run HRs.
That's not fundamental, except that relievers can't miss near the middle of the zone with fastballs is also fundamental to winning.
Curve hangs high to Hamilton, 1-0
Slider in the middle bad location, fouled off.
Swings under a FB above the zone in the middle, 1-2
Curve down and in 2-2
Fouls off a FB at the top
Takes another slider down and in, ball 3
Curve drops to the low inside corner, hamilton takes it and starts to toss the bat away and head to first, only for the ump to call it strike 3. And it was. ꓘ, 2 down

Solid 1-2-3 for Cole in the first, if a few too many pitches. He was ahead of guys in the count but couldn't finish them quickly. 19 pitches.

Cutter near middle with good drop topped foul at his feet.

Swings over the sharp dropping cutter down and in out of the zone, 2-2
Fouls off a cutter in the drop the bat happy zone.
Cutter hangs just inside middle middle, belted deep down the line in right, lands in the 2nd deck for a leadoff HR, 1-0 Yanks.

Nemesis Devers leads off the 2nd, followed by Valdez and Yoshida. I'd not be surprised if Cole give back the lead immediately, or pitches around Devers.
