Hard to believe Rice is in the lineup. I thought this was a rizzuto post at first.

Gil NEEDS to have a good game. There is no way Boone could have Trevino in to let Boston run wild on Prime Time TV.

Hard to believe Rice is in the lineup. Yeah, he should definitely have had a rest day.

They're giving Torres another day. At this point, with the All Star Break looming, why not just put Gleyber on the 15 Day DL and let him come back after the break? You could bring up Vivas and give him a couple of games to see where he's at.

Hard to believe Rice is in the lineup. I can snark, but that's master-class deadpan snarkery. Kudos.

DJ and Cabrera can platoon at 3rd for a week.

The Red Sox will try to win their 2nd series from the Yanks in 3 weeks by starting Kutter Crawford. Crawford pitched a good game against the Yanks in that series, getting the win in the same game the Sox ran wild, stealing a franchise-record 9 bases. I detailed Crawford's baseball history then, so there's no need to repeat it here. Since that game three weeks ago tonight, The Sox have gone 13-5 to get to 38-40, while the Yanks have gone 5-14 to fall to 55-36, 5 1/2 games ahed. Since that game, Crawford has made two starts: a mediocre one in Cincinnati in which he gave up 5 runs (3 earned) in 6 1/3 innings, allowing 5 hits and just one BB while striking out 7, but he allowed 3 HR in the 2nd best HR park in the NL. His last time out against a terrible Marlins team, he pitched a gem: 6 innings, 3 hits, 1 run (earned), 0 BB and 7 K. The only he allowed was a nearly meaningless solo HR to Jake Burger in the 5th when the Sox were already up 5-0. He's 2-3 in his last 5 starts with an ERA of 3.86 and a WHIP under 1.00, so he's pitched well in those 5 starts except for one detail: 9 HRs allowed in 30 1/3 inning. On the season, Crawford is 4-7 in 17 starts with a solid ERA 3.47. In 98 2/3 innings, he's given up 91 hits, 46 runs, 38 earned, 14 HR, walked 28 and struck out 102. His WHIP on the season is a slightly better than averager 1.201.
As with many AL East starters, Crawford has pitched much better against the Yanks than he has in general. His career record: 13-22 with a 4.33 ERA. Against the Yanks, in 5 starts and 2 relief appearances, he's 3-1 with a 2.43 ERA. In 29 2/3 innings, he's allowed just 18 hits, 9 runs, 8 earned and has struck out 35. His career K/9 innings is 8.0, an average number in the contemporary game, but against the Yankees, it's 10.6. He's had two issues against the Yanks, his BB rate and HR rate are higher than normal, 12 BB in the 29 2/3 innings and 5 HR. In the start against the Yanks at Fenway 3 weeks ago, Crawford lasted 6 innings, giving up a solo HR to Judge in the 1st, and then shutting the Yanks down the next four innings as the Sox piled up baserunners and stolen bases on Stroman and Trevino. He was up 4-1 in the 6th when he gave up a solo HR to Trevino and allowed Volpe to score on a wild pitch, but held the lead by getting Judge to strike out to end the inning and his night. 6 innings, 3 hits, 3 runs (earned) 2 HR, 1 BB and 9 K's, and getting the W as the Sox blew it open late with a blizzard of hits and stolen bases off of Ferguson, Weaver and the injured Ian Hamilton.
Repertoire: Crawford is a 5-pitch righty: 4-seamer, slider, cutter, curve and splitter. The fastball gets much better than average "rise" but average arm-side "run". The cutter gets better than average movement down and in to lefties, and away from righties. The slider is a sweeper that gets slightly below average movement both down and into lefties/away from righties. The splitter movement doesn't get nearly as much drop or tail as the average splitter, which is why it's his fourth pitch, a literal change-of-pace. The curve is almost a 12-to-6, getting much better than average drop, but below average break away from righties. His FB velocity is well below average, but he compensates by getting elite spin (top 5% in MLB the last two years). The spin rate on his curve is well below average and maybe he gets the above average drop from gripping it differently, maybe like a changeup. His extension is well below average, too. In run values, the FB and the cutter are solid plusses, the splitter is dead even 0, and the sweeper and curve are small minuses. His flyball, groundball and line drive rates are just about MLB average, as is his HR per flyball rate. He does get about 25% more popups than the average MLB pitcher. His barrel rate is slightly worse than MLB average, but the hard hit rate is almost dead-on average. His strand rate is also MLB average, but his BABIP is slightly above. His ERA estimators think he's a 3.60-4.00 ERA pitcher, but that could just be the Sox' OF defense working well for him. The current pitch mix through 17 starts: FB averaging 92-3 about 34% of the time (ESPN's radar gun is usually hot; they'll have him throwing 94-6 early... probably), cutter 87-8 about 31%, sweeper 81 about 21%, splitter 82 about 8%, and curve 77 about 6%.

Playing the name game...As he started against the Yanks before, we already know that Crawford in the only Kutter in MLB history, and the best Crawford is MLB career triples leader Sam Crawford, Looking at the triples leaders list a bit closer, almost all the top 20 did the bulk of their playing before 1930. The only one in the top 20 who lasted even into the 1960's was Stan Musial, who's tied for 19th with shortstop Rabbit Marranvile at 177 career triples. The only players who've plays in the majors in the last 20 years who are in the top 100 are Steve Finley, Jose Reyes (tied for 78th all-time with Joe DiMaggio (!) and two others at 131), and Kutter's Crawfordian "brother" Carl Crawford, who's tied for 95th with two others at 123. The active career leader in triples is Chrlie Blackmon of the Rockies; he's tied with 15 players for 446th all-time with 66 triples, but if Jarren Duran can finish with 15-20 triples this season, and keeps that up, he'll pass Charlie by about 2027 or so.

Luis Gil will try to stem the flood of hits, BB and HRs he's allowed in his last. After opening the season like an unstoppable force his first 12 starts (8-1, 1.82 ERA), he's been hit hard the last 5, especially the last 3. In the last 5, he's 1-3 with an ERA of 8.82 and a WHIP of 1.82. Things have just accelerated downhill in the last 3 games: 0-3, 14.90 ERA, just 9 2/3 innings, 14 hits, 16 runs, all earned, 9 BB, 3 HR and just 6 K's. Teams seem to have figured him out, and unless Blake can get him to add an effective 3rd pitch or improve his poor slider, his 2 1/2 pitch "arsenal" doesn't seem to off much hope of improvement. Right now, he's the pitching personification of Mike Tyson's famous quote: "Everybody's got a plan until they get punched in the mouth". Gil got punched in the mouth and knocked out by the Orioles 3 starts ago, and his previous "plan" and confidence seem flat on their back at the moment. On the season, the surface numbers are still respectable, the residue of his fantastic first 12 starts: 9-4, 3.41 ERA, 89 2/3 innings, 53 hits, 35 runs, 34 earned, 48 BB and 102 K's with a WHIP of 1.195. If Yankees fans had been asked before the season whether they'd sign on to that performance from the emergency #5 starter after Cole got hurt, the answer would have been a joyful "Yes!". Right now, most are a bit worried about whether Gil can be allowed to stay in the rotation much longer.
Gil has started twice against the Red Sox with similar results. He pitched 4 2/3 innings of scorless ball in a start in 2021, given up 3 hits, 4 BB and striking out 4, and got similar results in the start he made to open the series in Boston 3 weeks ago Friday. He struggled through 104 pitches to complete 5 innings, giving up 1 run on 4 hits and 4 BB with 6 K's, and earned his last win to date in the big Alex Verdugo game, 8-1 (which was also the last game the Yanks looked like a serious title-contender; they started their current 5-14 rockslide downhill the next day, not concindentally with Gil's plummet). You can add the totals for the career numbers; his ERA against the Sox is just 0.82, and the WHIP is 1.552; one of those numbers will likely have to give in the other tonight. The Sox' team quadruple slash line against Gil is .194/.341/.222/563.

Yesterday, the Yanks came off the canvas after the devastating blown loss on Friday and fought the whole game to wallop the Red Sox 14-4, evening the series at a game apiece. Ben Rice led off the bottom of the 1st with a solo, broke it wide open in the 5th with a 3-run HR and added another 3-run HR his next time up in the 7th to lead the attack. There were other heroes as well, DJ Lemahieu with 2 hits for RBI, Verdugo with his first HR in three weeks that tied the game at 3, Austin Wells for an elite professional at bat, with two great takes and two excellent spoils, working out an 8-pitch walk to force in the go-ahead run, and Tim Hill with 2 1/3 inings of shutout relief of a struggling Cole, earning the win.
In other AL East action...In Texas, the Rangers held a 2-0 lead against the Rays until the 7th, when Yandy Diaz hit a 3-run HR to give the Rays the lead, but the Rangers struck right back in their half on a 2-run shot by Marcus Semien. Ex-Yankee David Robertson and Kirby Yates made it stand up with a 1-2-3 inning each. Yates got his 12th save, giving the Rangers the series win. In Oakland, the A's scored one for big underdogs everywhere by ambusing O's rookie Cade Povich for 3 runs in the 1st and knocked him out with 5 more in the 2nd in a 7-run inning, and the O's were down 14-1 in the 6th. The game was out of hand by the time they went into their usual rally-in-the-late innings act, and lost to the A's 19-8. Five different A's hit HRs, six different A's had 2 or more hits, and seven different A's knocked in at least two runs. Of some note; ex-Yankee Miguel Andujar had 3 hits and 3 RBI. After 6 years of wandering in the baseball wilderness, he may finally have recoverd some of what he lost after his rookie season: he's now batting .304 in just over 150 PA. Even with the enormous lead, ex-Yankee Luis Medina had to work hard to get through 5 innings at 98 pitches to get his 2nd win in 7 starts for the A's this year. In Seattle, the Jays built up a 5-0 lead going to the bottom of the 8th, then had to fight off late HRs in the 8th and 9th to hold off the Mariners and win 5-4. Mitch Haniger hits a 3 run shot in the 8th off of changeup specialist Trevor Richards and the M's got the tying run to 2nd with nobody out, but Richards and Chad Green got them out of that jam. In the 9th, Luke Raley hit a solo HR with 1 out, bringing the tying run to the plate, but Green got the last two hitters, ending it on a foul pop by Dominic Canzone. Rookie Japanese import Yasiel Rodriguez threw his best game of the season for the Jays, going 6 innings of scoreless, 1-hit ball with 6 K's for his 1st win in the majors.
The Yanks win coupled with the O's loss gained back the game they lost to the O's on Friday, putting them just 2 games back going into the day. They also pushed the Red Sox and Rays 1 game back, leaving them 5 1/2 and 10 behind the Yanks, respectively. The Jays remained in last, 14 games behind the Yanks and 16 games out of 1st.
