They're giving Torres another day. At this point, with the All Star Break looming, why not just put Gleyber on the 15 Day DL and let him come back after the break? You could bring up Vivas and give him a couple of games to see where he's at. Definitely worth a shot, I think. He's hot at AAA; the Yanks should give him a cup of coffee and see what he's got. DJ and Cabrera can platoon at 3rd for a week. If they don't, he's a wasted roster spot. He's not going to replace Gleyber this year, but they definitely need to see what Vivas has before 2025, as it will make a difference in the Gleyber decision. They're not going to keep Vivas on the 40 man through the winter to keep him at AAA next year. As for third base, I think you need to have DJ in the lineup pretty much every day, whether it's at third or DH. I know Judge needs his DH days, especially with him going to the ASG but DJ is finally starting to look a little like DJ. The hits of late are good, but what I'm seeing with his hits and ABs is that he's FINALLY hitting the ball where it's pitched. When we used to call him "Le Machine", this was his calling card. He has only 1 K in his last 20 ABs and he's taking the ball the other way. The extra base hits aren't there yet, but I think his eye and timing are coming back, along with his health. Oswaldo is what he is. He's a valuable bench player that needs reps, but he can get them spelling Verdugo, DJ, whoever is at 2B, Volpe, and even Rice.

Elsewhere in the AL East today, the other 3 teams are wrapping up their series on the road. The Rays tried to avoid getting swept in Texas by sending Zack Littell (3-5 3.94 ERA) out to face Nathan Eovaldi (5-3, 3.15 ERA), but it looks like Texas will get the sweep after all, the Rangers are up 12-2 in 8th. Rookie Wyatt Langford and Jonah Heim have 4 hits each; things are starting to click for the former uberprospect Langford who struggled early on, but is now 12 for 25 in his last 7 games, raising his BAVG to .270. The O's and A's played the rubber game of their series in Oakland; Grayson Rodriguez (10-3, 3.45 ERA) started against Mitch Spence (6-4, 4.15 ERA). The O's appear to be gaining revenge for yesterday's hammering; they're up 5-0 in the 3rd with Kjerstad hitting a 3-run HR in the 4-run 1st inning for Baltimore. The Jays and Mariners played the rubber game of their series at T-Mobile Park in Seattle: Jose Berrios (8-6, 3.63 ERA) started for Toronto and George Kirby (7-6, 3.32 ERA) started for the Mariners. So far, the "pitching form" is holding in that one, it's 0-0 in the bottom of the 3rd. I'll update the scores closer to gametime. Hopefully, they'll all be over and I'll be able to update the stadings in the East as well.
And, at 7:10 pm at the Stadium, it's Crawford vs. Gil.

I think I'll give The Sunday Standings™ before the game from now on when I can. It doesn't interrupt the game thread so much, it gives people a chance to read and think about them, and doing them during the game slows me down in doing PBP and other things in the thread. So, starting with the other divisions in the AL:
In the AL Central, the Guardians split 6 games to stay 23 over .500 at 55-32. The 2nd place Twins won 4 of 6 to gain a game, and are now 11 games over and 6 games back. The 3rd place Royals lost ground to both by losing 4 of 6, and are are now just 5 games over .500 after going 14-24 in their last 38 games. They're 3 behind the Twins and 9 games out of 1st. The Tigers had a good week, winning 4 of 6, temporarily slowing down their long slider into 4th, 7 games under. They're 9-15 in their last 24, are now 7 games under .500, 6 games back of KC, 9 back of Minnesota and 15 games out of 1st. The White Sox had their normal bad week, going 2-4. They've dropped to 39 games below .500, and, at 31 games out of 1st and 23 1/2 games behind the 3rd Wild Card, have been irreleant to anything but being traded deadline sellers (Garrett Crochet for a king's ransom, anyone?) and the #1 pick in the draft, for which they'll have to win the draft lottery anyway.
===============
In the West, the Mariners continue to push to fall into 2nd, going 2-4 this week, They've now lost 11 of 16 and are just 49-42 on the season. The Astros continue their drive to resume their usual place atop the division. They went 5-2 this week, and are now 3 games over .500 and two games behind Seattle. The Astros are 32-18 since their low water mark of 14-25 on May 11th, and 13-3 in their last 16 games. The defending champ Rangers lost their 6th straight and fell to 9 games under last Saturday, but might be starting to turn things around. 4-2 this week, they're now 7 games under .500, 5 behind the Astros and 7 behind the M's. The 4th place Angles mini hot streak came to an end this week, as they lost 5 of 6. Anaheim is back to 14 games under .500, 3 1/2 back of Texas, 8 1/2 back of Houston and 10 1/2 out of first. The A's finally interrupted their long streatch of horrendous play (11-34 from May 11th through the end of June). They won 4 of 5 this week, including their shocking blowout of the Orioles yesterday. They remain in last at 23 games under .500, 4 1/2 behind the Angels, and 15 games out of 1st.

Over in the NL...
In the East, the Phillies (58-31) got star hitters Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber off the IL this week, and have rebounded some, winning 4 of 6. The Braves lost 4 of 6, losing back the ground they gained while Harper and Schwarber were hurt. They're back to 9 games over .500 and are 9 games behind again. The Mets hot streak lost steam as they went 3-4 this week to fall back to 1 under .500, and are 5 games behind the Braves and 14 games out of 1st. The 4th-place Nationals called up uberprospect outfielder James Woods this week, but merely kept pace with the Mets, also losing 4 of 7. They're now 5 games under .500, 2 back of the Mets, 7 behind the Braves and 16 games out of 1st. The miserable Marlins have lost 5 in a row and are 10-21 in their last 31, but that's little worse than they've played the rest of the season. They're now 27 games under .500 and are 11 games out of 4th, wholly irrelevant to the playoff picture except for deciding which players they'll sell off to contenders for inadequate prospects in return.
==============
In the Central:
The Brewers continued to lose ground by droping 4 of 7 this week. They're now 52-38. The Cards continue to slowly gain on Milwaukee, picking up 1 1/2 games this week by going 4-2. They're now 4 games over .500 and just 5 behind the Brewers, despite a run differential of -44. A lot of the credit goes to closer Ryan Helsley, who leads the world with 31 saves (with just 2 blown saves), and has a chance to become the first reliever to get to 50 saves in a season since 2018. The Pirates, Reds and Cubs continue to tread water and are still in 3rd, 4th and 5th, all within 2 games of each other. Pittsburgh went 3-3, and they're now 4 games under, 4 behind St. Louis and 9 out of 1st. The Reds, despite sweeping the Yanks, lost their other 3 games this week, and gained no ground; they're 5 games under, 1/2 game back of the Pirates, 4 1/2 behind the Cards and 9 1/2 out of 1st. The Cubs moved slightly closer to becoming sellers at the deadline by dropping 4 of 6. They'e 8 games under, 1 1/2 behind the Reds, 2 behind the Pirates, 5 behind the Cards and 10 games back of Milwauke. It should be noted that the Cubs, as well as the other two above them, are still in striking distance (4, 4 1/2 and 6 games behind) of the 3rd Wild Card which is the...ahem...Cards, but there are three teams between the Reds and Cards.

Out West, the Dodgers feel no imminent threat, and split 6 games this week. They remain 20 games over .500 at 55-35. The Padres 9-1 hot streak decelerated, as they too went 3-3 this week. They remain 5 games over .500, and stay 7 1/2 out of 1st. The defending NL Champ Diamondbacks picked things up a bit: they won 4 of 6, climbing to 1 game under .500. They're 3 behind SD and 10 1/2 behind LA. The Giants kept pace with Arizona by also going 4-2. They're now 2 games under .500 and 1/2 game back of the D'backs, 3 1/2 behind the Padres and 11 out of 1st. The Rockies surprisingly had the best week in the division, going 5-2 to climb to 25 games under .500. They're now 11 1/2 out of 4th, 22 1/2 out of 1st and 14 1/2 behind the 3rd Wild Card and with only the Marlins behind them, will be joining Miami in a sellers' stall at the Trade Deadline Flea Market.
And that concludes The Sunday Standings™ for this week.

Hard to believe Rice is in the lineup. Yeah, he should definitely have had a rest day. He is too young to qualify for Boone’s rest list roster.

The Rangers wrapped up their sweep of the Rays, 13-2. The O's bounced back from the blowout loss yesterday, winning the game and the series against the A's, 6-3 today. The Jays and M's are tiee 4-4, bottom 9 in Seattle, but the M's have 2nd and 3rd with 1 out.

The Yankees need to string three of four wins to "be back". Rice had a great showing but I'd love to see the twwo big guys take over tonight.

Duran steps in... FB outside, below the waist, at 98. FB inner half at the knees, Duran misses under, pops high to the right side, Cabrera catches, 1 down.
