Cash lifts Pepiot after a sterling performance. That is not a .300 BAA change up. Something was different tonight, because that was his best pitch. Very much so, rizzuto. His change was his best offspeed pitch in the minors, but he must have lost it for a while. Or maybe he made an adjustment. Of maybe the Yanks' hitters can't read the change, for the 15rh striaght season. At least there has been improvement for the offense. The last game was 0 runs, today's game 1 run..

Volpe takes a sinker on the outside corner, 0-1 Takes a sinker well outside, 1-1 Gets a sweeper up in the zone above and outside middle and instead of recognizing and going to right, rolls it over to Walls, pretty sharply, but an easy play for the 3rd out. Two fails with RISP. Unless Volpe recovers the opposite field stroke he had the first two months, his BAVG is going to wind up where it wound up last season, and call into question his long-term viability as a starter, at least for the Yanks.
Bottoom 6, 4-1 Rays.
Siri, DeLuca and Caballero for the Rays in the 6th.

Siri takes a slider outside middle, 0-1 Geta another slider on the corner away, pulls it foul off 3rd. Siri with the Stantonian chase of a slider nowhere close to the plate low/away, K, 1 down.

I wish Cousins had a hard two-seamer to throw inside to right-handers. It would look a lot like a Jeff Nelson mix if he did.

DeLuca... Cousins yanks a sinker way outside, ball 1 And another almost to the same spot, 2-0 Slider taken waist high, inside middle, 2-1 Slider low in the zone, just outside middle, fouled off the right side, 2-2 Big sweeping slider goes across the whole zone, winds up just outside at the knees, but DeLuca gets a piece on the foul ball Sinker above middle, outside corner, spoiled Need the good slider starting middle going both low and away here. And that's what he throws and DeLuca chases for the K.

Here is a thought, based on how bad Rodon is in the first inning, why not use a "starter" then Rodon starts in the third??/

Caballero takes a sinker on the corner up and in, 0-1 Slider dives all the way across, winds up low and way outside, taken, 1-1 Slider starts at him, bends right down the middle, but he takes, 1-2 Slider dives outside 4-5 inches to the knees, and Caballero tries to check, but the 1st base ump rings him up, K, inning over. Cousins strikes out the side on 14 pitches. Very frustrating as he can look like this some games, and get crushed in some others. I guess a lot of it is quality of opponent, and confidence/lack of confidence there from.
Top, 7, 4-1 Rays. The pitchers lead off the 7th: Grisham and DJ, then back to the top for Rice.
Cubs still up 7-2 on the O's in the 8th Sox blowing out the A's 11-2 in the 4th. Maybe a rain delay there? Jays Giants starts in about an hour.

Grisham takes a thigh high sinker on the corner inside, 0-1 Cutter on the outer half, also thigh high, serves it over short for a leadoff hit. Yanks get the leadoff man on for the 3rd straight inning. Hasn't helped yet.

At least DJ didn't hit into a DP.

DJ takes a sinker below middle...sign Takes a slider near middle, just below and inside, sigh. Takes a slider outside, 1-2 Sinker in the zone down and in, and the Yanks are lucky DJ hits a soft chopper to 3rd, rather than making slightly better contact for a DP ball. Paredes fields throws to 2nd just ahead of Grisham sliding in, 1 down. Kelly out, Poche coming in to face Rice, the lefty.

Obvioously, Rice hasn't faced Poche before, unless on rehab in the minors.

At least DJ didn't hit into a DP. Definitely another positive about the offense, especially for DJ...
