...has the Yanks taking a HS pitcher named Ryan Sloan out of Illinois and says this about the possible pick:
"I only have one rumor associated with the Yankees and it centers around Sloan. Sloan’s arm slot creates somewhat lateral action on his stuff, but they’ve had success developing guys like Michael King for whom that is also true."
I should point out that the Yanks' being over multiple team payroll threshholds dropped their first pick to #26 of the 1st round, from #16, which is where they would have been, based on their barely-over-.500 record last yeat. The drop puts them into an area where the best prospects at that time in the draft should be a bunch of high school pitchers, which are known to carry the highest risk of any player type in the draft. What about the picks from say, 16-20? Multiple decent college hitter types who, while still risky, usually carry considerably less risk than high school pitching. Among them are Cam Smith from Florida State, Seaver King from Wake Forest, Christian Moore from Tennessee and Carson Benge from Oklahoma State.
I'm sure there are people on this board who know a lot more about the four college guys than I do, which isn't anything beyound their reports at Fangraphs, but I'd venture to say they're more likely (as a group) to contribute at the major league level than the HS pitchers being drafted in and around the Yankees' pick. The Yanks don't have to take one of those pitchers, of course, but that's the apparent cost of blowing through multiple payroll cap levels.

Edit: Forgot to link the piece: 2024 Mock Draft 1.0 As long as the Yankees hire Corey Kluber to teach the grip that he taught to Michael King.
