The O's send struggling rookie lefty Cade Povich to the mound to face the Yanks in the series opener. Povich started against the Yanks in the last series between the two teams at the Stadium in mid-June, so I won't recap his whole minor league history again. Povich turned in a decent start, giving up just one hit and 1 run in 4 2/3 innings, before being taken out with a 4-1 lead, having walked Juan Soto (his 5th walk of the game) and with Giancarlo Stanton due in. Jacob Webb caught Stanton looking to end that inning, but the Yanks rallied to tie the game when Stanton hit a 3 run HR in the 7th and the game-tying single in the 9th. The O's stole the game back with 2 in the 10th off of Clay Holmes, and though the Yanks got their ghost runner home on a sac fly, that was it, and they lost in 10 innings, 7-6.
After that no-deicision, Povich had a so-so start against the Indians, a good start against the Rangers, but was annihilated by the A's (of all teams) in his last start, knocked out in the 2nd having allowed 5 hits, 3 BB and 2 HR, good for 8 earned runs in 1-inning-plus. The A's routed the O's in that one, taking a 14-1 lead after 4 innings and coasting to a 19-8 win. On the season, Povich has made 6 starts since being called up as an injury replacement, and he's 1-3 with a dreadful 6.51 ERA. In 27 2/3 innings, he's allowed 28 hits, 20 runs, all earned, 6 HR, and 13 BB, while striking out 18. His WHIP is also very poor: 1.482. In the 6 starts, he's pitched one outstanding game, two good ones, one so-so game, and has been obliterated twice, a fairly typical rollercoaster ride for a rookie on his first stint in the majors, unless he's overpowering (think Paul Skenes of the Pirates, there).
That one game is obviously the only time he's faced the Yanks. He went 4 2/3, allowing 1 hit, 1 run (earned), and no HR, but 5 walks with just 1 K. His ERA against the Yanks is 1.29 and the WHIP is also 1.29. The Yanks' quadruple slash line against Povich is an odd .071/.300/.071/.371.

Repertoire: Povich is a 6-pitch lefty who relies heavily on his 4-seamer, but mixes in his curve, cutter, change and sweeper very well. His sinker is rarely used. His 4-seamer gets average rise and better than average run to the arm side. The curve gets much better than average drop and better than average break in on righties. The cutter gets better than average drop and average horizontal break. The sweeper doesn't act much like a sweeper, getting average drops and well below average break away from lefties. The change gets below average drop and average tail. The sinker isn't thrown enough to get a good read on its tendencies. It's just 6 starts, but 5 of his pitches are essentially average in run value, but the cutter is -5 runs in very limited usage, just 74 pitches total. His FB velocity and curve spin are considerably below average but the FB spin is above average and his extension is slightly below average. So far his line drive rate is much better than league average, but his flyball rate is well about average as well. Somehow, his hard hit rate is better than league average, but his barrell rate is nearly twice the league average. The luck factors have been neutral overall: much better than average BABIP, but worse than average strand rate and HR/FB rate. The ERA estimators are divergent: the xERA says he's pitched like a 3.99 pitcher, but the FIP and xFIP say he's pitched like a 6.00 ERA pitcher, or slightly worse than that. The pitch mix through 6 starts: 4-seamer averaging 92 about 44% of the time, curve 76 about 19%, cutter 88 about 15%, sweeper 83 about 11%, change 86 about 9%, and sinker 91 about twice a game.
Playing the name game...We did the name game for him 3 1/2 weeks ago...to sum up, Cade is a very modern first name. There have been just 4 in MLB history, and all of them started their careers in 2022 or later. None of the 4 have done much in the majors yet, Cade Marlowe is at this moment 0.1 career bWAR ahead of Cade Smith, the Guardians reliever, but it seems like Smith will pass him in a few weeks. I'll be surprised if Povich doesn't become the best Cade in MLB history within 2-3 years. There have been no MLB players with the last name Cade, and as for Poviches, Cade is the only one in MLB history.

Gerrit Cole has had vastly more major league experience and success than his opponent, but not this year, at least, not so far. Cole is making just his 5th start of the season for the Yanks, and he's struggled since coming off the IL: one good start, on OK start and two bad ones, including his last start against the Red Sox, when he left in the 5th inning against a Sox team that has his number all too frequently, allowing 7 hits, 2 BB, and 4 runs while striking out 8. His last pitch of the night was a terrible FB that Rafeal Devers belted out to deep right center in the 5th. The Yanks destroyed the bad part of the Boston bullpen and got him off the hook, winning 14-4. On the season, Cole is 1-1 with an un-Cole like 6.75 ERA. In 17 1/3 innings, he's givein up 20 hits, 13 runs, all earned, 5 HR and 8 BB, while striking out 19. His WHIP for the season is a very bad 1.615.
Cole has historically been very good against the Orioles, but they were usually a bad team until the last year or two. In 13 starts against the O's, Cole is 5-3 with a 2.64 ERA. In 81 2/3 innings, he's allowed 62 hits, 31 runs, 24 earned, 6 HR and 15 BB, while striking out 98. His WHIP against them is an outstanding 0.94 and the O's team quadruple slash line against Gerrit is .203/.240/.332/.572. He last faced them at the Stadium in his first start after being activated and did OK on a fairly low pitchcount: he gave up just 3 hits, 1 BB and just while striking out 5 in the first 4 innings, but was pulled after just 62 pitches when Cedric Mullins led off the 5th with a single. Ron Marinaccio came in and immediately coughed up a 2-run HR to Ramon Urias, doubling Cole's earned run total for the day. His opponent that day was Povich and though the Yanks rallied to tie, Holmes coughed up the L in the 10th, 7-6.

Yesterday, the Yanks lost another game in poor form, their 17th in their last 23, and another series, losing to the Rays 5-4. The Yanks haven't won any of their last 8 series. Once again, weak starting pitching did them in, along with crucial RISP fails . They blew a 2nd and 3rd, nobody out chance in the 1st, failing to score. They loaded the bases in the 5th with 1 out, and got just 1 run on a sac fly. They got 2 on with 1 out in the 8th and eventually loaded the bases, but failed to score, and they got two walks and a two out single by Rice off of Pete Fairbanks, but Torres popped out with the tying run at 3rd to end it. Yanks were just 1 for 9 with RISP, the single by Rice in the 9th. Nestor Cortes struggled against the same five Rays' hitters who usually hit him: #1-5 in the Rays order went 5-9 against him the first two times up, scoring all five of the Rays runs before the 3rd inning was over. Cortes struggled through 4 1/3, allowing 7 hits and 5 earned runs, putting the Yanks in another early hole the struggling lineup couldn't quite overcome and fell to 4-8 on the season. The loss dropped the Yanks back to 17 games over .500 at 56-39.
In other AL East action, the Jays won the rubber game of their series against the Giants in San Fran, 5-3. Kevin Gausman threw 7 innings of 2-run ball for his 7th win, and ex-Yankee Chad Green gave up a solo HR in the 9th but got his 3rd save. Danny Jansen and Spencer Horwitz hit solo HRs for the Jays. The Jays have won 4 of their last five games; the Giants have lost 4 of their last 5. The Cubs completed a 3-game humiliating sweep of the O's in Camden Yards, shutting them out for a 2nd straight day 8-0. The Cubs outscored the Orioles in the three games, 21-2. Justin Steele allowed just 3 hits in 7 shutout inings to get to 2-3 on the season, lowering his ERA to 2.71. Albert Suarez gave up 4 runs in 5 innings to take his 3rd loss against 5 wins. Seiya Suzuki knocked in 3, and was a HR short of a cycle, and Michael Bush scored 3 and knocked in two with a couple of doubles. The Cubs' win was their 4th straight and 6th in their last 7 games as they try to get their management to buy rather than sell at the deadline; the O's have now lost 5 of 7 after winning 6 of 7. Tanner Houck threw 6 scoreless innings for his 8th win, and Chase Anderson earned a 3-innings save with 3 more shutout innings, as the Red Sox whitewashed the A's, 7-0 in the rubber game of their series at Fenway Park. Houck's win moved him to 8-6 on the season with an ERA of 2.54, good for 5th in the AL. The damage came from the Sox' 5-6-7 hitters: Connor Wong hit a solo HR and scored 3 runs, Masataka Yoshida knocked in 4 with 3 hits including a 2 run HR, and Wilyer Abreu had 2 RBI and 3 hits including a solo HR. Ex-Yankee farmhand Luis Medina got hit early and offen, scored on in 4 of his 6 innings, allowing 7 hits, 2 HR and 6 earned runs in his 5+ innings, dropping to 2-4 on the season. Boston has now won 7 of 9 and is 18-7 since losing the Verdugo game to open the first Yankees series at Fenway, gaining 10 1/2 games on the Yankees in that time.
The Yanks loss cost them a chance to gain a game on the O's; the other 3 teams in the division gained a game on both teams. Baltimore still leads the Yanks by 2 games, the Red Sox by 5 1/2, the Rays by 11, and the Jays by 14.

Elsewhere in the AL East today, the Rays get a tougher challenge for the last series before the break; the 1st place Guardians (57-35) come in for three games. 1st game is 6:50 pm in the MiseryDome™; Carlos Carrasco starts for Cleveland. Carrasco has had a miserable 1st half, going 3-6 with a 5.22 ERA, but he's done better the last 4 games, 1-0 with a 3.68 ERA. Taj Bradley (3-4, 3.23 ERA) throws for Tampa. He's been brilliant lately; since the O's hammered for 9 runs in 3 1/3 innings on June 1st, he's gone 2-1 with a 1.29 ERA in 6 starts. The Red Sox get a tougher opponent as well in Fenway this weekend: the Royals (51-43) come to Boston for 3 games, having won their last 3 games. The first game is at 7:10 pm with Cole Ragans (5-6, 3.23 ERA) starting for KC, he bounced back off a bad start against the Guardians with a good one against the Rockies last time out. Cooper Criswell (3-3, 4.15 ERA) is listed in some places to be recalled from AAA to throw for the Red Sox. The Jays close out the first half by finishing their West Coast swing in Arizona against the defending NL Champ Diamondbacks who've finally completed their slow grind back to .500 (47-47) by taking a series from the Braves; they were as many as 7 games under .500 at the end of the May. The first game is tonight at 9:40 pm; Yasiel Rodriguez (1-2, 3.68) is coming off two excellent starts, the last one was 6 scoreless innings of 1-hit ball against the Mariners for his first major league win. Ryne Nelson (6-6, 5.08 ERA) starts for the D'backs, he's coming off back to back very good starts against the Dodgers and Padres, both on the road.
And, at 7:05 pm, weather permitting, it's Cole vs. Povich at Camden Yards. The expected rain delay is more likely to help the O's than the Yanks; the good part of the Yankee pen is mostly fried by the last two games, while the O's were able to rest their entire pen except for Cole Irvin, moved from 5th starter to pitch 4 innings of long relief yesterday, because his turn in the rotation won't come up again until after the break.
That's is for the pre-game huzzah, I'll be back in about 100 minutes for the game itself, assuming the weather permits an on-time start.

Not sure I like DJL leading off but as desousa says........ He is hitting .372 against lefties this year. Oh wait that's his OPS. He use to bat leadoff when he was a good hitter. Maybe this will get him going, like the "OLD" days

Yanks have put J.D. Davis on the IL with softcontactitis and called up Jorbit Vivas, so he can sit the first game as almost every Yankee callup does. Ha, the welcome to the majors playbook, Yankees style.

Ha, the welcome to the majors playbook, Yankees style. Don't worry; Boone is searching hard for an easy spot to break Vivas in, like maybe if the Yanks are down by 7 in the 8th, he can go in for Torres to give his groin an inning off.

Lets win this series and turn our season around!
What a shitty lineup! Dj batting .170 and leading off Jah Jones ???? This is the perfect opportunity to get Vivas in right away and this is what they do???

Terrible line up, but you have to use what you have. In times like this I like to bust out my favorite lineup of all time to note that things can always be worse.
From July 8th, 2013 against the Royals:
Brett Gardner CF Zoilo Almonte LF Robinson Canó 2B Travis Hafner DH Vernon Wells RF Travis Ishikawa 1B Luis Cruz SS Alberto González 3B Austin Romine C
Holy cow that's a terrible line-up!

DJ is hitting .313 in his last 7 games and is taking the baseball to all fields. The power is still lacking, but if he can make contact and get on, it's worth a shot.
