In his presser Hyde said one of the Yankee Coaches was saying somthing that bothered him, he was frustrated and reacted. Sounds like I'm in the minority here but he's seen his players hit 10 times by Yankee pitchers. Three Yankees have been hit including Judge who missed a game because of that. But, if I'm on a team and another team has hit our guys ten times I want my manager to have a strong reaction. I think if the tables were turned we would expect the same from Boone, wouldn't we? In some of the rehashing of this history they showed two instances where Henderson was hit in what clearly was retaliation for Judge being hit. I didn't see a replay of Judge being hit, can't recall if it looked intentional or if he was the first player hit of the thirteen. I understand Holmes wasn't trying to hit him but as I've said, I've seen my guys hit 10 times. I don't have a problem with his reaction.

Believe it or not, I started that 9th inning relaxation moment gag almost 20 years ago at the old place. The original star was Kyle Farnsworth, and it was the 8th inning relaxation moment in front of Mo, who was almost always relaxing. It passed to Dellin Betances, and moved to the 9th inning during the Chapman Era, then to Zack Britton when he closed for the Yanks with his control problems then back to Chapman, and finally to Holmes when he became the closer. One thing about Farnsworth, no one with a brain was starting a brawl with him. In his years on the team he had maybe one great clutch moment. A moment he set up himself. It was this game: The One MomentHe came into a game against the Red Sox in Fenway Park up two runs in the 8th. After a single, a popup and another single, the Sox had 1st and 3rd with 1 out, and Youkillis, a clutch hitter up. He whiffed Youkillis for the 2nd out. Needing to get Loretta to keep Oritz from coming up with bases-loaded and two down for the usual soul-crushing blow, he got ahead 0-2, then missed four straight times to load them up. I knew...you knew...every Yankee and Red Sox fan knew a grand slam or a double off the Monster was coming from Ortiz. Walking Loretta was the pitching equivalent of a mortal sin, not challenging him with any of four two-strike pitches with Ortiz on deck. He deserved punishment. (His judgment cometh and that right soon, as the the Bible puts it) But instead, Farnsworth got ahead, 1-2. Ortiz fouled one off, then another, and the tension was mounting; everyone watching and waiting for the fatal mistake. And Farnsworth made a mistake, but it was such a bad mistake, it fooled everyone, including Ortiz. He hung a curve high, and it barely dropped into the top of the zone for strike 3. It was the exact same pitch Adam Wainwright threw to Carlos Beltran get him to ꓘ to end the NLCS in the exact same situation just months later: up by 2, bases loaded, 2 outs, but in the 9th, not the 8th, and on purpose, not by accident, as Farnsworth had done. Ortiz was flummoxed. I was stunned into silence. Doom would not fall that inning, and Mo came in for the 9th and got Manny, Varitek and Lowell 1-2-3 on 13 pitches, and the Yanks stole one in Fenway, 8-6. It was so shocking, it's the only incident in Farnsworth's time with the Yanks I remember clearly, aside from his being the inspiration for the relaxation moment.

If Dykes stirred things up after an O's player got hit in the head, then he's wrong and Boone should speak to him about it in private, to make sure he doesn't do anything that stupid again. If that is true, then what Hyde did is comepletely understandable.

OK, the Yanks win 4-1, and with Red Sox losing, they gain a game on the O's and Sox, but not the Rays, who held on to beat the Guardians 2-0. The Jays just nosed ahead of the D'backs, 3-2 in the 7th, and if that score holds, the Yanks will end the day 1 back of the Orioles, 4 1/2 up on the Red Sox, and still 9 ahead of the Rays and 12 ahead of the Jays.
And that will do it for me for tonight. See you all again tomorow afternoon for Gil vs. Rodriguez. Good night to all. Bye.

Will also add that the Red Sox losing put them in a tie with the Royals for the 3rd wildcard (one has 1 more win other 1 more loss so its a dead tie) and the stupid Astros are now 1.5 back of both.

Obviously all the Yankees problems weren't solved In a day, but it def made me feel better seeing the Orioles looking like a beatable team and vintage Gerit Cole finally showed up in 2024.

He may already be feeling the pine that he starts sitting on tomorrow. How's it going, Matt? Any mid-game libation tonight? I'm well. Thanks for asking, rizz. In honor of our friend pipps, I was drinking a little Woodford Reserve on the rocks. It went down so well; I had another and missed the rest of the game. Nice win for the good guys.

a win today (saturday) would guarantee our first series win in a month and at worst we'd go into the break one game out of the the division lead.
very concerned about retaliation. think we've hit something like 10 O's and we've been hit only 3 times. and though it wasn't intentional, could understand them being pissed and looking for payback. of course most worried about judge & soto. judge got hit last time around and missed a game. going hiking w friends followed by a concert on the mtn but will nervously be checking in.

I am afraid what we saw tonight will continue until someone other than Judge and Soto start producing. Judge got one pitch to hit all night and he hit a homer but they walked him 4 times. Why not. Pitch around the 2 of them and take your chances with an inept lineup. The answer does not appear to be internal. I don't think getting back Stanton and Rizzo at some point makes it much better. Having Jones as a DH says it all. Yeah I know he got a hit last night but he struck out 3 times and could not get a bunt down when he needed to.

Hey Matt -- I've been sort of in and out on the forum for the past few weeks, so most importantly I'm glad your health issues are trending in the right direction. I can only imagine what an emotional roller coaster that has been. You being a man of refined taste, I am honored beyond words that a profoundly reflective libation like Woodford Reserve on the rocks would put you in mind of me. One of my favorites as well, and guaranteed to put any game in a proper perspective. I have never been one to play the smart-ass game of "stump the bartender," but I wondered if you were familiar with the old school Bronx Cocktail. As far as I know it hasn't been popular in over 80 years, but it made an appearance in the first "Thin Man" movie in 1934 when Nick Charles was demonstrating his preferred methods for shaking various drinks (a Martini is best done in 3/4 time, he says.) Basically it's a Perfect Martini with an ounce of orange juice added (no garnish.) I had never had one until I made my own at the start of the Yankees homestand against the Reds, hoping to change their luck. Obviously it didn't work, but I liked the drink itself. I used 2 oz of Tanqueray Gin and a half oz each of Dolin Sweet and Dry Vermouth plus the ounce of fresh-squeezed (a must) OJ. I had Mojitos yesterday for the game and that seemed to lead our boys to victory, so I'm going with that again today. Hoisting them to your continued recovery!

I've never heard of a Bronx Cocktail, but it sounds like something right up my alley. I was actually perusing through my liquor cabinet yesterday for some gin, but realized I was out. I generally like Bombay Saffire, but also drink a local gin called Barr Hill. It's made with honey, so it has a very different taste. I'll give your Bronx Cocktail a taste. Thanks to you pipps for your infinite libations' knowledge.

I only heard about the Bronx because of Nick Charles. I did some research and found that in 1934 it was the third-most popular mixed drink behind the HOFers Martini and Manhattan. There are so many good boutique gins out there these days. Back in the 60s and 70s there were only a handful regularly available in the US -- Gordon's, Gilbey's, Beefeater, maybe a few more. Bombay Sapphire is one of my go-to gins as well, and like Hendricks and Tanqueray and Plymouth you can get it in most parts of the world (including Saudi Arabia haha.) Thanks for inspiring such informative spirits discussions!

PS -- there is a guy on YouTube called The Educated Barfly who does informative videos on mixology complete with histories of the drinks. Fun to watch.
