There's 2 theories to that. Jorge Posada always used to go up ready to swing after a walk because he thought the first pitch was going to be a "get me over". I assume that lefty to lefty, Rice was just looking for a pitch to contact.

FB misses well high near the corner away, 1-0 on Torres Can't check on a FB about 4-5 inches above the middle of the zone, stupid swing start, 1-1 Change tails well outside near the top, 2-1 Bounces another curve over the inner 3rd, 3-1 Fb high above the middle, he doesn't start this time, ball 4. Bases loaded on the walk to Torres? Pitching around him as well to get to the lefty Verdugo? A nice polite single to left center would work wonders here, Alex

I'd say let it hit you, but not when it's coming towards your noggin.

Cutter misses just outside near the top, 1-0. Missed by an inch on Gameday, 0% FB in the middle just below the top taken, 1-1 Loses a sinker up and in, Verdugo has to spin out to avoid getting hit in the head, 2-1 Chases a cutter about 4-5 inches above the zone, just outside middle, 2-1. Terrible chase there with no reason to. Sinker away, topped off the end of the bat toward Henderson, he charges, fields and throws Verdugo out by a step. Two more big RISP fails for the Yanks in the first, plus they didn't make him throw strikes when he was struggling with control.
Bottom 1, 0-0 21 pitches in the 1st for Povich.

good lord, how do you swing out of the zone when the guy is wild? A very good question. Especially because Verdugo isn't a wild HR hacker. Good evening, pres.

The Yankees should fire every hitting coach from the big club to the Florida Complex League and start over.

Henderson takes a cutter into the top of the zone near middle, 0-1 FB misses way high over the inner half, 1-1 Big curve into the zone below and outside middle, bounced foul off 1st, 1-2 Flies open a bit, FB misses about a foot outside near the bottom, 2-2 Big curve to the knees, inside middle, topped foul. FB waist high, about 3-4 inches outside, slapped to the left side, Lemahieu way over in the hole, still has to dive to his left to grab, gets up, spins around but the throw is too late, infield hit for Henderson leading off.

I don't think Brooks Robinson throws out Henderson there, especially since he'd be playing for the O's. Now we're going to be off to the races against Trevino, with Cole on the mound, who doesn't hold on runners well.
