I going to miss the first half of this one since my daughter has a summer play that she's performing in. Hopefully the Yanks can finally win consecutive games.

Iron Horse Grisham is in the line up again. Hicks 2.0.
Great move by the Yankees calling up Jorbit and not starting him (Sarcasm).

Don't know why you'd want to sit DJ for the lefty swinging Vivas against a hard-throwing righty after DJ's banner performance last night against a soft-tossing lefty. (rizzuto-style) Guess they're waiting for Sidney Ponson to come out of retirement and sign with somebody to give Vivas a start.

The O's send their strong #2 starter Grayson Rodriguez out this afternoon to try to even this series against the Yanks. Rodriguez started against the Yanks in the first series between the teams in Baltimore in April, but not the series at the Stadium last month. There's no need to go back over his history in baseball to that point, so I'll just continue with what's happened to Rodriguez since that start in late Arpil. Just 2 days after that game, the O's put Rodriguez on the IL with an inflamed right shoulder, and he missed the next 20 days, being reactivated for a start against the Mariners at home on May 18th. He's pitched very well since his reactivation; in 10 starts, he's 7-2 with a 3.43 ERA. He's been especially good in his last 7 starts. He took one beating right in the middle at the hands of the Astros in Houston, but in those seven starts, he's 6-1 with a 3.50 ERA. In the last 3, he's 3-0 with an ERA of 2.33. On the season, Rodriguez is 11-3 with a 3.52 ERA. In 16 starts, he's pitched 94 2/3 innings, allowing 85 hits, 38 runs, 37 earned, 10 HR, and 30 BB with 105 K. His WHIP on the season is a solid 1.215.
Against the Yanks, Rodriguez is making his 3rd career start, and he's 1-0, yet to allow a run againist them in 12 innings. He's allowed 8 hits and 5 walks, striking out 7. His WHIP against them is 1.083, and their team quadruple slash line against him is .186/.271/.209/.480. In the start against the Yanks this year, he went 5 2/3 scoreless innings against them in a game at Camden Yards on April 29th, allowing 5 hits, 3 BB and striking out 3.
Repertoire: Rodriguez is a tall power righty who throws 5 pitches: a sinker which he uses rarely, a 4-seamer that he leans on, and he distributes fairly evenly his change, curve and slider. The fastball has average "rise" but elite "run" in on righties and away from lefties. The change getter considerably better than average drop but far less tail away from righties and into lefties. The curve gets about average movment in both directions, as does his slider. By run values, his change has been a big plus so far this year, and the 4-seamer is also plus. The change has played to a minus and the both the sinker and curve have been close to 0 overall, but he's thrown so few sinkers that the small plus from that pitch looks much larger on a per 100 pitch basis. His FB velocity is near elite, the spin is somewhat less than that. His curve spin rate is well above average. His elite extension (top 5% in all of MLB) makes his stuff play up. In spite of all of his weapons, both his barrell rate and hard hit rate are slightly above average, and his line drive rate is quite a bit above average, the 7th highest of 68 qualified MLB starters. His groundball rate is a bit below average, the flyball rate a bit higher. His popup rate is almost exactly average. His BABIP is slightly higher than average, but he has a better than average strand rate as well. His HR/FB rate is better than average, too. So the luck factors have worked for him so far, but not so much that it's moved his ERA estimators much either way off his actual ERA. The pitch mix so far this season: FB averaging 96 about 47% of the time, change 83 about 20% of the time, curve 81 about 16% of the time, slider 87 about 16% of the time as well, and the sinker 96 about once per start.

Playing the name game...We did the name game for him back in April. Rodriguez is just the 2nd Grayson in MLB history, Grayson Griener was a backup catcher for parts of six seasons, mostly for the Tigers. No players with last name Grayson, especially not Dick Grayson. Way too many Rodriguezes: 72 in all. The best of them is Alex Rodriguez, who's top 20 all time in WAR, top 10 in runs, HR, RBI, and K's, top 25 in hits, at bats and PA, top 30 in games played, and managed to finally earn himself a ring with a brilliant post-season in 2009. PED usage has him barred from the Hall of Fame by the voters; the only Hall of Famer named Rodriguez is also an ex-Yankee, if only for a little while: catcher Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez.

The Yanks send Luis Gil out to try to win their 1st series in their last 9, and trying pitch a 2nd good game in a row after 3 terrible starts. He pitched a terrific game against the Red Sox last time out, changing his pattern, using his slider as his #2 pitch and reducing the change to #3 in his arsenal. It worked; holding the Sox to 4 hits and 0 BB while striking out 9. His last pitch was a FB he put in Rafael Devers' wheelhouse with 1 out in the 6th, and with Kutter Crawford pitching 7 shutout innings against the Yanks, that run was good enough to give Gil his 4th straight loss, 3-0, even though two Yankee relievers also gave up solo HRs in the 8th and 9th. On the season Gil is now 9-5 with a 3.27 ERA, In 18 starts, he's pitched 96 1/3 innings, allowing 57 hits, 36 runs, 35 earned, 9 HR and 48 BB with 111 K's. His WHIP is 1.090 on the season. He's in a 5-way tie for 4th in the league in wins, leads the league in fewest hits per 9 innings, 7th in K/9 innings, 8thin fewest HR per 9, but also 2nd in the league in total walks, and has the highest BB/9 innings among 35 qualified AL starters.
This will be Gil's 4th career start against the O's; a good one in his 2021 season, a better one in Baltimore in April for a win, and the undressing the O's gave him at the Stadium in June on their way to a 17-5 rout of the Yanks. He's thrown 13 2/3 innings, allowing 14 hits, 7 runs (all earned) all in the game 3 1/2 weeks ago, 1 HR, and 4 BB with 12 K's. His WHIP against the O's is 1.317, and their team quadruple slash line against Gil is .255/.317/.346/.662.

Yesterday, the Yanks got some great pitching by their ace and enough clutch hitting from unlikely sources, and beat the O's in the 1st game of the series, 4-1. Jose Trevino had a double in the middle of the 2-run rally in the 2nd inning, and another in the 9th that led to their final run, and Judge hit his 33rd HR of the season. Gerrit Cole pitched 6 strong innings, allowing 5 hits, 1 run and 1 BB while striking out 7 to move to 2-1 on the year and lower his ERA to 5.24. Kahnle, Weavver and Holmes each pitch a scoreless inning of relief, with Holmes earning his 21st save. Holmes also hit Heston Kjerstad in the helmet in the 9th, nearly setting off a total team brawl. The residue of that dustup remains to be seen, but if I were Judge and Soto, I'd stay loose at the plate the next two days.
In other AL East action, the Rays' Taj Bradley pitched his 7th straight outstanding game, throwing 7 shutout innings, allowing just 5 hits and 2 BB, and striking out 8, moving his record to 4-4 and lowering his ERA to 2.90 in a 2-0 win over the Guardians. In those 7 starts, Bradley is 3-1 with a 1.07 ERA, and hasn't allowed more than 2 runs in any of the 7. Catcher Alex Jackson broke his 0-23 slump with 2 hits and scored both Rays' runs, Yandy Diaz had 3 hits and the only RBI in the game for Tampa. The Rays win puts them back at .500 for the season. In Boston, Royals' lefty Cole Ragans shut down the Red Sox for 7 innings, allowing just 4 hits and 1 run, striking out 7, leading the Royals to a 6-1 win at Fenway. Ragans is now 6-6 on the season with a 3.16 ERA. Adam Frazier and M.J. Melendez had two hits and scored 2 runs each, both Melendez and Bobby Witt, Jr. hit solo HRs. The win was the Royals 4th in a row and the loss was just the 7th in the last 23 games for the Red Sox. In Arizona, the D'backs got 2 in the 8th to tie the game and walked it off in the 9th on a sac fly following a double steal to rally to beat the Jays, 5-4, and finally get over .500 for the first time since April 4th. Justin Martinez pitched a scoreless 9th in relief for his 4th win, and lowered his ERA to 1.35. Outfielder Alek Thomas, recently off the IL, got the two-run single in the 8th that tied the game, and Geraldo Perdomo hit the sac fly off of ex-Yankee Chad Green. Green, who walked the the two runners on base before the double steal then intentionally walked Christian Walker, setting up Perdomo for the game-winner.
The Yanks' win allowed them to gain ground on everyone in the East except the Rays. They're now just 1 game behind the O's for first, and again 4 1/2 ahead of the Sox for 2nd. The Rays stay 9 games back of the Yanks, and the Jays drop to 14 games back.

Elsewhere in the AL East today, the other 3 East teams play the middle games of their series. In Tampa at 4:10, its Gavin Williams (0-1, 4.82 ERA) making just his 3rd start since being called up this season for the Guardians; Zack Littell (4-6, 4.44 ERA) will be trying to turn things around for himself and the Rays; the Rangers gave him a whupping six days ago in Texas. In Boston, also at 4:10 pm, the Royals send out Cy Young contender Seth Lugo out to try to win the series. Lugo is tied for the AL lead in wins with 11 and leads in ERA at 2.21. Kutter Craword (5-7, 3.24 ERA) will try to throw a 3rd good game in a row for the Sox after shutting out the Yanks with ease for 7 innings his last time out. In Arizona at 10:10 this evening, the Jays start Yusei Kikuchi (4-8, 4.00 ERA) to try to even that series. He's pitched 2 good games in a row after the Yanks finally got to him in a started in Toronto two weeks ago. Opposing him is D'backs ace Zac Gallen (6-5, 3.33 ERA). Gallen got roughed up a bit in his last two starts, but against two outstanding lineups, the Braves and the Dodgers.
And, at 4:05 this afternoon, weather permitting, it's Gil vs. Rodriguez at Camden Yards. Forecast for the area this afternoon says slight chance of thunderstorms.
