wow yankees win a series and back to back games and move into a tie w the O's for 1st. who woulda thunk it. in addition to the HR hitters, gleyber had 3 hits. rice now struggling w a 3 K game. can't comment on gil but overall looks like a solid start. and suddenly it looks like we have a bullpen. a sweep tomorrow and 1st place heading into the break sounds good to me.

They also win their first series against an AL East team since taking 2 of 3 from the Rays in mid-May. The season's series against the O's is now 4-5 as well, with a chance to even it up tomorrow. Not a great one, with Rodon starting, but still a chance.

Obviously other events overshadowing things, but what a great win to win the series against the Orioles! I saw part of the game from the gym and heard part on the radio.

Swept by the Reds, but have a chance to sweep the Orioles wow. Baltimore is having a nightmare homestand against the Yanks and Cubs.

Honorable Mention: Soto with 2 runs scored and the big HR in the 5th, that immediately answered the O's only run in the 4th, plus a double later on. Judge for a "Fear of God" shot back to back with Soto, basically ending all resistance today. HM also to Tim Hill throwing 2 innings of strong relief coming in after Gil. Amazing how important this dumpster dive pickup reliever hhas swiftly become to this team.
3rd star of the game: Gleyber Torres for 3 hits, a run, a RBI and one more good fielding play. Torres lifted his BAVG back to .230 and he's 14-43 in his last twelve gamees with 6 runs and 6 RBI. 2nd star: Austin Wells for the game-breaking 3-run HR in the first, getting the Yanks off to a flying start against a pitcher they hadn't scored against in 2 games and 12 innings beore today, and putting the suddenly struggling O's back on their heels right away. 1st star: Luis Gil, obviously, for backing up his outstanding start in a losinig effort against the Red Sox last time with another great start against an even better lineup in their park. 6 innings of 5 hit, 1 BB, 1 run ball, striking out 7, and getting his first win after three striaght losses, moving him into a tie for 3rd in the AL with 10 wins, and lowering his ERA to 3.17.

The early games in the East are over. Kutter Crawford also back up his great start against the Yanks last Sunday with an even better start against the Royals, throwing another 7 innings of shutout ball, this time just 2 hits and one BB, moving his record to 6-7 and lowering his ERA to 3.00. Sox won, 5-0. Devers hit his 22nd HR. Someone I've never heard of with the outlandish name of Jhokensky Noel hit a 2 run HR in the 8th off of Garrett Cleavinger, and Emmanuel Clase pitched a scoreless 9th for his 29th save as the Guardians evened their series with the Rays, 4-2 in Tampa.
Jays and D'backs play in about 3 hours in Arizona.
Yanks gain a game on the O's and Rays, but not the Sox, and gain 1/2 game on the Jays for now.
Yanks percentage points back of the O's in a tie for first, Sox are 4 1/2 behind both, the Rays fall 10 back of both and the Jays are 14 1/2 behind both, at least for now.

Nice DP turned by Rice to end the game! That was DJ at first… Rice was at first the whole game today, I think. EDIT: play by play at MLB.com confirms it was Rice at first the whole way, inlcuding the 3-3-6 DP that ended it.EDIT EDIT: you are right, just watched the video and it's a 26 number on the back of the first baseman and not Rice's #93. Fooled me, others here, and MLB.com, where the Box doesn't show presumably Cabrera coming in to play 3rd and DJ moving to 1st. I'd expect them to correct that later. On the replay, the unform number is partially obscured by the guide wire holding up the netting, but it's clearly 20-something and not 90-something. Good pickup by you, inger, even the YES guys didn't mention it. Kay even says: "Chopped to Rice" to begin the playcall on the game-ending DP.

OK, Yanks close out the first half in the stupid Sunday morning game on Roku, starting at 11:35 am.
Carlos Rodon will try to show any sign of life after five terrible starts in a row, giving up 28 earned runs in 23 innings, and burying the Yanks early in 4 of the 5 games. He's now 9-7 on the season with a 4.63 ERA. Dean Kremer will try to help the O's avoid getting swept at home for the entire 6-game homestand by 2 struggling teams. Kremer is 1-1 since coming off the IL, a good 5-inning start against the Mariners in Seattle, and a 7-run pasting (5 earned) in 4 innings at home against the Cubs in the first game of his 0-5 (so far) homestand. And then, everybody gets a mimi-vacation for the All-Star Break.
OK, game preview done, I go to check up on notifications.

DJ... Takes a waist high slider on the outer 3rd, 0-1 Takes another waist high on the corner away, 0-2 Lays off the slider going well outside. He should be vulnerable to a FB up and in here. OPS now at .496. Just anemic offensively. Sad, but maybe he is finished.

Armando Benitez is the Name That Yankee, I think. Great timing after last night. Or maybe it was because of last night. They'll never tell, even if it was.
