Yesterday, the Yanks got some great pitching from their rebounding phenom and road the HR bats of Wells, Soto and Judge and 3 scoreless innings of relief from their 2nd-tier relievers to win a series and two games in a row for the first time in a month. They jumped on the O's Grayson Rodriguez, who hadn't allowed a run against them in 2 starts and 12 innings for 4 in the 1st, capped by Wells' 3-run shot and cruised to a 6-1 win. Luis Gil has his 2nd straight outstanding start, throwing 6 innings of 1-run ball, alllowing 5 hits and 1 BB, while striking out 7. As he did ine the start before against Boston, Gil used the slider much more; in fact he used it the most of his pitches, 31 sliders, 30 fastballs and 22 changeups. Once again he was able to strike out several lefties with sliders down and in or on the back leg. He won his 10th game against 5 losses and lowered his ERA to 3.17, moving back within 0.15 of the league's top 10. The victory pushed them back up to 19 games over .500 at 58-39, heading into the last game of the first half of the season.
In other AL East action, the Red Sox Kutter Crawford matched his seven shutout innings against the Yanks a week ago with 7 more against the Royals. The Sox jumped on Cy Young candidate Seth Lugo for 1 in the 2nd and 3 in the 3rd, as Crawford and Zack Kelly combined for a 4 hit shutout win, 5-0. Crawford improved to 6-7 on the season, Lugo dropped to 11-4. Rafael Devers hit his 22nd HR, a solo shot in the 5th that completed the scoring. The win was the Sox' 9th in 12 games, and 17th in their last 24, while the loss broke a 4-game win streak for Kansas City. The Guardians got a pinch hit 2-run HR in the 8th from rookie OF Jhokensy Noel to break a 2-2 tie, and held on to beat the Rays in Tampa, 4-2. Garrett Cleavinger gave up the HR and took the loss, dropping to 5-2 on the season. Nick Sandlin got his 6th relief win of the season with a scoreless 7th inning, and Emmauel Clase got his 29th save. The win broke a 3-game losing streak for Cleveland, while the Rays have now gone 4-6 in their last 10 games despite taking 2 of 3 from the Yanks earlier this week. The Diamondbacks beat up on Jays starter Jose Berrios for 5 ER in 4 innings, and kept on burying the Jays bullpen, blowing out Toronto, 12-1. Rookie Yilbert Diaz got his 1st major league win by giving up just 1 run on 4 hits in 6 innings. Berrios' loss dropped him to 8-7 on the season. Corbin Carroll knocked in 6 and scored 3 with a pair of 3-run HRs as he tries to come back from a truly awful start to his season. Arizona's win was their 4th in a row and 8th in the last 11 games, and pushed the defending NL champs 2 games over for the first time since they were 3-1 to open the season. The Jays have lost 8 of 13 since winning the 3rd game of the 4-game series with the Yanks.
The Yanks' win allowed then to gain ground on everyone in the East except the Red Sox. They're now tied with the O's for first (O's are at .600, Yanks are at .598 because of 1 more win and 1 more loss). The Sox are 4 1/2 back of both in 3rd, the Rays are 10 back of both in 4th and the Jays are 14 back of both in the basement.
Elsewhere in the AL East today, the other 3 East teams play the final games of their series and the first half of the season. In the rubber game at Fenway at 1:35 pm, the Royals' Brady Singer (5-5, 2.93 ERA) will oppose the Sox' Brayan Bello (9-5, 5.40 ERA). In the rubber game at 1:40 pm in Tampa, the Guardians' Ben Lively (8-4, 3.59 ERA) will square off againt the Ray's Ryan Pepiot (5-5, 4.20 ERA). At 4:10 in Arizona, the Jays will send leftyYusei Kikuchi (4-8, 4.00 ERA) out to face the D'backs ace, Zack Gallen (6-5, 3.33 ERA)
And, at 11:35 am (in the morning, for gosh sakes!), it's Rodon vs. Kremer as the Yanks try to re-take the lead in the AL East before the break with a sweep of the O's that would also square the season's series at 5-5.

And now, The Sunday Standings™ for Sunday, July 14th, right before the All-Star Break:
In the AL Central, The Guardians (58-36) still lead the Cental despite dropping 4 of 7 last week. The Twins took 4 of 6 to gain 1 1/2 games on Cleveland. They're now 13 games over .500 and 4 1/2 behind the Guardians. The Royals won 4 out of 5 to gain 2 1/2 on Cleveland; they're back to 8 games over, and are 2 1/2 back of the Twins and 7 games out of first. The Tigers had a good week as well, winning 5 of 7 to move within 4 games of .500. They're 6 behind the Royals, 8 1/2 back of the Twins and 13 out of first. The White Sox continued their plummet by losing 5 of 6, falling to 43 games under .500. It's not even worth taking the time to point out that they're 32 1/2 games out of 1st.

In the West, the Mariners' time at the top of the division looks like it's about to end. They split 6 games, remaining at 7 games over at 52-45. The Astros continue to close on the M's. They won 4 of 6 to get to 5 games over .500 and are now just 1 game behind. The defending champ Rangers won 4 of 6 as well and are now 5 games under .500, 5 back of Houston and 6 games out of 1st. The Angels dropped 4 of 7 and fell to 15 under .500. They're now 5 behind Texas, 10 behind Houston and 11 games out of 1st. The A's mini-streak came to an end as they lost 4 of 6, falling back to 25 games under. They're in the cellar, 16 games out of 1st.
=============
Over in the NL...
In the East, the Phillies (62-33) won 4 of 6 and are now 3 games clear of the next best record in baseball (Guardians). They had an impressive sweep of the Dodgers at home as part of their week. The Braves won 4 of 7 to get back to 10 games over, but the East race is almost out of reach, now 9 1/2 back of Philly. The Mets have re-ignited, winning 5 in a row in a 6-1 week. They've blasted over .500 by 4 games, trail the Braves by just 3 games now but are still 12 1/2 out of 1st. The Nats have won 2 straight after losing their first 5 games this week. They're now 8 games under .500 and are disappearing in the Mets' rear view mirror, now 6 behind New York, 9 behind Atlanta and 18 1/2 out of first. The Marlins won last Sunday, their 2nd straight, but have lost 5 in a row since, and are 2-10 in their last 12 games. At 31 games under and 30 games back, 1st place in the division isn't even a rumor to them.

In the Central:
The Brewers continued to lose ground by droping 4 of 6 this week. They're still in first, but 12 games over at 54-42. The Cards had two rainouts and had to play two doubleheaders but managed to go 4-3 and gain another 1 1/2 games on Milwakee. They're now 5 games over .500 and just 3 1/2 behind the Brewers. The Pirates, Reds and Cubs all had good weeks, but continue to mill around just below .500 and are still in 3rd, 4th and 5th, still within 2 games of each other. Pittsburgh went 5-2, and they're now 1 games under, 3 behind St. Louis and 6 1/2 out of 1st. The Reds, also went 5-2, they're now 3 games under, 1 back of the Pirates, 4 behind St. Louis and 7 1/2 out of 1st. The Cubs won 5 in a row, including an impressive sweep of the Orioles on the road, but lost their last two and are now 5 games under .500, 1 back of the Reds, 2 behind the Pirates, 5 behind the Cards and 8 1/2 out of 1st.
===============
Out West, the Dodgers' sweep at the hands of the Phillies was part of a dreadful 1-5 week, dropping them to 16 games over at 56-40. The suddenly hot defending NL champ Diamondbacks took 5 of 7 to gain 3 1/2 games, moving them into a tie for 2nd at 2 games over .500 and given them hope that the division race isn't quite over yet; they're now 7 games behind LA. As are the Padres, whose excellent play of late vanished in a 5-game losing streak. San Diego was 1-4 this week, allowing the D'backs to catch them at 2 games over .500. The Giants had won 8 of 11, but have now lost 5 of 7, and they're back to 4 games under. They trail both SD and Arizone by 3 games and the Dodgers by 10. The Rockies lost 3 in a row and 6 of 7 this week, dropping them to 30 games under and 23 games out of 1st.
And that concludes The Sunday Standings™ for this week. See you for the game in about 25 minutes.

Still no Vivas ...what a joke! ... and we continue to run Cabrera and Grisham out there. Text book way to kill a prospects confidence The kid was raking at AAA, so why not see if he's the real deal? Plus, it's a poor way to develop prospects.

Volpe's still living off his hot 1st 60 games. In his last 34 games, he's hitting .169 with a .424 OPS. 35 K's and 6 BB, just 7 RBI. BAVG down to .246.

OK, I got this Roku thing on my TV. Already had one "playback failed" error. Hopefully this isn't a harbinger of things to come.

The audio and video don't seem connected, almost like they're announcing from a studio. The video quality is, eh, ok-ish.

Soto... Takes a FB high, 1-0 Takes a FB on the inside corner, 1-1 FB at the top of the zone in the middle, Soto tries to bunt for a hit, Kremer fields and throws him out, 2 down. Fine play, barehanding near the line and throwing on target and on time.
