despite how bad we've been, we're still very much in the thick of it. we control our destiny though don't like the trend line. for sure cashman has to shore up the bullpen if we are to have any shot in the PS. 3B and a bat off the bench would be useful as well. 64 games. will the real yankees please step up.
As frustrating as that loss was, no need for anyone to climb out on a window ledge. It's one loss; Yanks took the series...away. May come into play re a tie breaker, but that seems remote. Right again no one in the Al looks miles better it's there for the taking. Theres no powerhouse in the Al right now. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I think it may have a little to do with the trend. Haven't researched it but it does feel like we have given more games away that should have been in the W column than games we unexpectently won.

I had some time so I took a deeper dive into Holmes stats. What surprised me is that the League is hitting .327 off his sinker and he only has an 18% whiff rate on that pitch. He also has a pretty high WOBA of .359 and slightly lower xWOBA of .324. The BA against his sweeper is.250 and the whiff rate is 41%. The WOBA is .263 and XWOBA is 147. The BA against his slider is .063 and whiff rate is 40%. WOBA 1s 117 and XWOBA is 187.
Of interest to me is that we've all heard what a great sinker Holmes has but the results would argue against that. He throws it hard but it doesn't move as much as his other pitches and is put into play much more. He also throws his sinker much more than the other two pitches.

Mariano lived in a different universe than Holmes does. We can do 10000 word essays on the differences. My intent was to point out that a reliever can be successufl and still pitch to contact. Holmes is not my ideal closer. I'll be fine if the Yankees part ways with him at the end of the year. But just looking at the game the Yankees gave away it was not on him. Two consecitive misplays caused the loss. Whether it is the catcher securing the 3rd strike, the SS handling a ground ball or the LF processing a fly, baseball requires a fielder doing his job. That did not happen yesterday. Do you trust Holmes in a big situation in the playoffs? I don't. He never seems to have a clean inning. Always traffic on the bases. I dont trust any Closer not named Mariano Rivera and even he blew a World Series Game 7 ... doesnt get any worse than that Closers are in a position that is obviously magnified to the extreme and are in a situation that requires skill, luck, and the support of the team around them Who is the ideal closer right now??? Emmanuel Clase might be having the best season but he allows more contact (less K's) than almost every closer in baseball and he has blown 3 saves Ryan Helsley leads the league in save but has a 1.17 WHIP ... not much better than Holmes

There is never a bad place to improve a team. If there is a chance to upgrade at closer, I am happy to see it. All I am arguing is that there are a lot of other areas of greater concern to me. It feels that 2/3 of the procuction on this team comes from four uniform numbers. That makes it very hard to win a playoff structure with multiple rounds. Of course, it also makes it very hard to change things at the TDL.

Trends can turn just as quickly as when Yanks went from almost unbeatable to where they were prior to the Baltimore series. I'm looking to get back on track post AS break. I think it was on yesterday's broadcast when it was shown that at this point Yanks are heavily favored over the O's to take the division. Why? May have something to do with the fact that they have an advantage in home games remaining.

By the way I'm not saying that the Yankees Shouldnt add a closer if available ... I think it would make the BP super strong having Holmes as the Setup man and someone stronger as the closer. But remeber the grass is always greener on other teams fields

I cant undertsand how anyone could blame Holmes for this loss You dont have to K every battter to be a good pitcher Holmes should have gotten 5 outs that inning and the Yankees should have won !!! Volpe ... You couldnt ask for a more routine ground ball Verdugo ... You couldnt ask for a weaker hit routine flyout If Holmes had K'd the final batter and the 3rd strike got away from the Catcher ... you'd still be blaming Holmes No Pitcher is good if the fielders can't make routine plays Understood...but it doesn't help to put the winning runs on base via free passes. No pun intended, but Holmes didn't leave any margin for error. He gave up 2 walks and a hit, that's not a good pitching line for 1 inning. I'm not even counting the hit to LF. He's not fully to blame for the loss, but he played a part in it.

Mariano Rivera had a "successful" career as a closer averaging fewer stikeouts per inning than Clay Holmes. This game is not on Holmes. Not fair to go by only the strikeout stat.
Career OBP vs Rivera: .262
Career OBP vs Holmes: .323

Career OBP vs Holmes: .323

When everything is going bad and you have a closer that you know will come in and usually makes it interesting instead just being lights out is just the cherry on top. Are there any lightsout closers right now? I know a lot of people on his board thought Edwin Diaz was a lights out closer ...even though he sux every other year I'm sure some of us would love to have Kimbrell who the Yankees lit up last night for his 5th BS ... Hader has 5 loses and a 3.85 ERA (highest paid closer in MLB) At least 2 of Holmes 6 BS were with 0 ER - 7 of 19 runs allowed this season have been unearned He's not great but ... take those 2 blown saves away and he'd be a top 5 closer this season If you remember at the start of the 2024 season the Yankees fielding bailed out Holmes more than a couple of times.

OK...as with most wins/losses, it was a group effort. Holmes shares in that responsibility, putting the winning runs on base via walks. Just my 2 cents I think they should give Neely a chance, if he doesn't work out as a Closer, the Yankees have time to trade for one.
