It isn't. I only brought up that stat to say that it is not impossible to be a successful closer and pitch to contact. The biggest issue with that is, of course, that you rely on your fielders to do a professional job. In general, I don't think the Yankee defense is very good. Again, in the beginning of the season, the Yankees fielding did bailout Holmes more than a couple of times. Being a successful Closer while pitching to contact is 1 thing, it's another thing when pitching to contact comes with wildness and a high OBP. I am fine if the Yankees upgrade the 9th inning role though holding auditions in August could be tricky. I feel that way about every position. I only have two names printed in ink on my lineup cards.

It was such a flukish loss. A couple walks. A couple muffed plays by normally reliable fielders. No way to blame Gleyber. There needn’t always be a goat 🐐. It just happened, that’s all. Be happy we won the series. Be happy that we’re in the chase. Yankee fans are so spoiled we never, ever want to lose… a wise man once said ...

the holmes line:
over 1st 30 games. 19 saves. 2 BSv. 4 ER allowed - all in one game. next 10 games. 2 saves 3 BSv and 1 blown tie. 7.45 ERA .883 OPS.
responsible for 4 losses during this 9-19 run. it's reasonable to expect wins in all those games - then we're 13-15 and the "panic" isn't as bad. it's just a slump instead of "when will they win again". in his "defense" - shoddy fielding and errors contributed in 2 of those games. a constant theme for him.
of course, would love a "shutdown" closer if they even exist. will/can we get one - doubtful.
he's a free agent after the season. if he pitches like he did in 1st 30 games, they keep him. if he doesn't, as greg nettles once said, "sayonara".

Like I posted I was working. I was sitting in my van listening out the inning. I heard the HR another Riceball call and I thought the game was over. I shut the van off and went inside. A little bit later I check FB and I see a friend post Great another blow save from Holmes. I was in shock.

Maybe just maybe his success this year didn't just happen. The Yankees transitioned him from a guy who was mostly a mediocre starter into a pretty good reliver. Maybe he's better suited to be a RP and he can focus on less pitches and throw harder for one or two innings. Careers aren't linear, some guys make adjustments, change roles. Some improve some regress. Only way to determine if the changes will play over time is to keep giving him opportunities. , Perfectly stated. I remember a Yankee starter who was fair to middling that was nearly trade bait a couple times. He was converted successfully to a reliever, what was his name? Something Rivera? Mariano, maybe? Mo? Something like that. Remeber the beggining of this season when Holmes had a 0.00 ERA through 20 games and Everyone wanted to make Ian Hamilton the closer?

To me, Hamilton really hasn’t been the same since his first trip to the IL with the Yankees. He was outstanding for a stretch when we initially obtained him. Not many fans knew who he was until he put on Pinstripes. However, his value has exceeded what was expended to obtain him.

I remember in the beginning of the season when the Yankees made some excellent fielding plays and bailed out Holmes. Then it looked like Holmes settled down. His pitches had movement in the strike zone, and it looked like he put his past wildness behind him. Now, he's wild, throwing too many pitches, and throwing many hittable pitches.
