The Yankees have a pick coming up at 271. There is a kid that I umpired, a RHP out of high school, Kyle Degroat. He's ranked 239 but has some signability issues as he's committed to Texas. However, his comments in the local paper this week seemed to indicate that he's open to going pro if he's selected on day 1. He's 92-94 on his fastball as an 18 year old, touches 96. He has a good slider and a third pitch that he's hardly ever shown because he doesn't need it in HS competition. I'd love to see the Yankees take a shot at a local kid. If he plays at Hudson Valley, it would literally be 20 minutes from his home. I know the "NIL" coin can reach 7 figures in football and basketball. Any idea if there is money to be made in college baseball ?

The Yankee's first five picks have been pitchers with some similar traits. All went to big time college programs, all see to have good size and throw hard, all put up what can probably be described as mediocre numbers in college ball. It's obvious they want to replenish arms and want big bodies who throw hard. They obviously feel that these guys can produce better results after being coached up. I guess it may also mean they are happy with depth they have at position players. My thoughts about the Yankees picking hard throwing pitchers are...The Yankees can teach pitchers how to have better control, they can teach them how to throw better breaking pitches, but for the most part velocity can't be taught.

Exactly. They are looking for flawed pitchers who can be coached. They're going to need all these pitchers, because like last season, they are going to have to trade some.

I read on X that 11th rounder JUCO pitcher Mack Estrada is going to FSU and the Yanks may have to dump some money on him for him to sign.

Interesting take. The Yankees committed to the whole Driveline Pitching philosophy a few years ago including making Sam Brend their director of pitching. Do you think it is time for a change ?

I heard someone comment that the Yankees were selecting some players higher than normal so they could sign them for less than the value of the slot because their pool money was a bit low. Don't think I but that one.
