A nice 3 hit game by DJ would be welcomed.

This afternoon, the Rays send the white-hot Taj Bradley to the mound to face the Yanks for the 2nd time this season. He faced the Yanks in his first start this year in mid-May in Tampa, so I don't need to re-hash his history. He pitched a very good game against the Yanks that day, but struggled over his next 4 starts, including taking a beating from the Orioles in his 5th start of the season, 9 runs in 3 1/3 innings. At that time, Bradley was 1-3 on the year with an ERA of 5.81. Since then, he's made seven superb starts, giving up 2 runs in one of them, and allowing either no runs or 1 run in the other 6. He's 3-1 in those 7 starts with an ERA of 1.07 and a WHIP of 0.79, striking out 53 and walking 15 in 42 innings. On the season, he's 4-4 with an ERA of 2.90, which would put him in the top 10 if he weren't about 30 innings short of qualifying. In 12 starts, he's pitched 58 1/3 innings, allowing 52 hits, 25 runs, 22 earned, 10 HR, 24 BB and struck out 85. Again, if he had enough innings to qualify, his 11.2 K's per 9 innings would be 3rd best in the AL. His WHIP on the season is now an excellent 1.112. His srart against the Yanks today is just the 2nd in his career. The first was in that first start of the season: he went 6 innings, allowed 4 hits, 1 run (earned) walked 2 and struck out 7. He was outdueled by Clarke Schmidt (remember him?), who threw 6 2/3 innings of shutout ball. Anthony Rizzo (remember him??) knocked in both runs with a single to left in the 4th and a HR to right in the 8th in a 2-0 Yankees win. It's just the one game, but Bradley's WHIP against the Yankees is 1.000, and it's just 24 PA, but the Yankee team quadruple slash line against him is .182/.250/.182/.432
Repertoire: Bradley is a 4-pitch righty who throws pretty hard. He throws the 4-seamer in the mid-to-upper 90's, his breaking pitches are a curve and cutter, and he relies fairly heavily on a splitter. His FB gets elite "rise" but not run, His cutter drops less than average but has much sharper glove side break than average. His splitter gets below avereage tail and drop, I assume it's "tunnelled" well off of his fastball because it's his best pitch, at least by run values. His curve is almost straight down, getting elite drop with just a few inches of glove side break. By run values, the splitter is +7, the cutter is +4 and the FB and curve are small minuses. His FB spin is above average, and his velocity is considerably above average, the curve spin is below average.
Bradley gives up fewer line drives than average, gets fewer grounders and more flyballs than average and his popup percentage is right around MLB average. He gets more swingng strikes than average by quite a bit, but far fewer called strikes, so his CSW% is actually below MLB average for a starter. In spite of the somewhat low CSW% and the relatively high BB rate, his K-BB% would be top 10 in all of MLB if he had enough innings to qualifty. His BABIP is just ..264, 20 pts less than MLB average for starters. His barrell rate is 11%, considerably worse than average, and his hard hit rate is slightly worse than average. He also has a higher than average HR per flyball rate, but he's been superb at stranding runners, and would again be top 10 in strand rate if he had enough innings to qualify. That very high strand rate is why his ERA run esitmators show hiim somewhat lucky this season; all three are 1/2 run to a run higher than his actual ERA. The pitch mix so far this season: FB averaging 96 about 42% of the time, Splitter 90-91 about 28%, cutter 91 about 21%, and curve 79 about 9% of the time.
We played the name game for Bradley back in May... he's the only Taj in MLB history, and there have been 23 other Bradleys, of which the best is either Sox outfielder Jackie Bradley, Jr. or outfielder/board game manufacturer Milton Bradley. Taj stands a decent chance to become the best Bradley by about 2030 if his arm stays attached.

The Yanks send out Nestor Cortes hoping his schizophrenic home/road splits continure for today at least. On the road, Cortes is 0-5 with a .604 ERA and an .893 OPS against; at home, he's 4-3 with a 1.81 ERA and a 0.515 OPS against. On the season, Nestor is 4-8 in 20 starts with an ERA of 3.67. In 115 1/3 innings, he's allowed 107 hits, 48 runs, 47 earned, 16 HR and 22 BB with 110 K's. His WHIP on the season is close to Bradley's: 1.118. In his last five starts, the home-road dichotomy persists: 2 bad road games and 3 excellent home games. Overall, he's 1-3 in his last 5 outings with an ERA of 3.90. Cortes is 9th in the league in fewest BB per 9 innings at 1.72, tied with 13 other pitchers including Carlos Rodon for 2nd in starts at 20, is just outside the top 10 in innings pitched, and is 8th in the league in K/BB ratio at 5.00.
Against the Rays, Cortes has been medicore in 10 starts and 5 games in relief. He's 2-5 with a 4.62 ERA. In 66 2/3 innings, he's allowed 61 hits, 34 runs, all earned, 11 HR, 18 BB and struck out 59. His WHIP agains the Rays is a solid 1.185, but their team quadruple slash line against him is .241/.298/.443/.741 Most of the damage is done by the Rays normal top 5 hitters in the lineup: Diaz, Arozarena, B. Lowe, Paredes and Amed Rosario all have great records against him. In that, he gets a small break, as it seems that Yandy Diaz, who beats on Cortes like he's a leg-breaker for a loan shark and Cortes is late, is away taking care of a family situation.

Yankees lineup vs Bradley...it's just one game and 24 PA, and just 5 Yankees on the current roster have batted against him. (Stanton, Rizzo, Trevino and Berti were there for that start, now they're all still on the IL: Rice and D.J. weren't on the roster yet, and Grisham and Wells didn't play that day) so:
Soto is 0-3 Judge is 0-1 with 2 BB Torres is 0-2 with 1 K Verdugo is 5-8 against him with 3 doubles and a triple, 1 RBI, 1 BB and 3 K (he faced Bradley twice with the Red Sox before whifffing 3 times against Bradley in the game in May). Volpe is 0-3 with 2 K. Everyone else in the lineup hasn't faced Bradley
On the bench: None.

1. Rosario (3B) is 4-11, 1 double, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 2 BB, 2 K and 1 HBP 2. Paredes (1B) is 6-19 with 1 double, 2 solo HR, 2 BB, and 3 K 3. Curtis Mead (DH) is 1-3 4. Last night, the Yanks got 6 innings of 1-run, 7 K ball from Gerrit Cole, his 2nd excellent start in a row, 3 innings of shutout relief, 4 hits, a BB and 3 runs from Juan Soto, and clutch 3-run double from Anthony Volpe with 2 outs in the 3rd, and cruised to a 6-1 win over the Rays. The win was their 3rd in the last 4 games, and puts them back to 19 games over .500 at 59-40.
In other AL East action, the Tigers built up a 5-2 lead and held on the beat the Jays 5-4 in the first of 3 games at the Rogers Centre. Mark Canha and Wencel Perez connected for HRs off of Jays starter Chris Bassitt, who had his 3rd poor start in a row after a long hot streak; Bassitt is back to .500 on the season at 8-8. Jack Flaherty was solid for 5 2/3 innings, allowing just 2 runs on 3 hits and a BB, and striking out 8 for his 7th win of the season. TheTigers have now won 3 in a row and 9 of 11 to climb back to within two games of .500. The Orioles got 4 in the first off of Nathan Eovaldi and 2 more in the 5th, and cruised to a 9-1 win over the Rangers in the first of 3 games in Arlington. O's ace Corbin Burnes gave up just 1 run on 2 hits in 6 innings to earn his 10th win of the season. The O's hit 5 HR, 2 by Anthony Santander for 5 RBI; he's rapidly climbing the HR leaders board and now has 26 this year. Gunnar Henderson also had 4 hits and scored 3 runs. The win was the O's 2nd in a row after 5 straight losses. The Red Sox were slowed down by Gavin Stone and 4 relievers, got just a solo HR by Duran in the 5th, and then blew the 1-0 game in the 8th when Freddie Freeman hit a grand slam off of the Sox' top lefty, Brennan Bernadino, and LA held on to win 4-1 in the first of 3 games at Dodgers Stadium. Daniel Hudson is in the process of taking back the closer's job from the recently struggling Evan Phillips and got his 5th save.
The Yanks' win allowed them to pick up a game on everyone in the East except Baltimore. They remain 1 game behind the O's, but are now again 4 1/2 up on the Red Sox, 10 ahead of the Rays and 14 ahead of the Jays.
Elsewhere in the AL East today, the Jays, O's and Red Sox all play the middle game of their 3-game series. The Jays host the Tigers again at Rogers Centre at 1:05 pm. Reese Olson (4-8, 3.30) ERA takes the mound to try to win the series for the Tigers. Yusei Kikuchi (4-8. 4.42 ERA) goes for the Jays, hoping to rebound from a drubbing the Diamonbacks gave him in his last start. In Arlington at 7:05 pm, the O's send Grayson Rodriguez (11-4, 3.88 ERA) out against the Rangers, hoping for a bounceback game after the Yanks knocked him around some for the 1st time ever his last game. Veteran Max Scherzer (1-2, 2.96) goes for Texas. He's making his 6th start of the season since coming off the IL, and gave up just 1 run but lasted just 4 innings against the Astros in a 4-2 Texas win in his last outing. And on the West Coast at 7:15 pm in a marquee matchup nationally, the Red Sox will take on the Dodgers. The Sox will start Brayan Bello (10-5, 5.32 ERA) and the Dodgers will oppose with rookie Justin Wrobleski (0-2, 6.30), hoping for his first good game and the first win of his MLB career in just his 3rd MLB start.
And, at 1:07 pm this afternoon at the Stadium, it's Bradley vs. Cortes. No Saturday Leadersâ„¢ this week, the teams have played just 3 games (most of them) or 2 games (a couple of them) since the last Leaders update. That's it for the preview follies, see you in about a half hour for first pitch.

FB is 89-90 to start. Hits the outside corner with an 89 FB, 1-1 Cutter at the knees in the middle fouled off, 1-2 FB moves to the inside corner waist high, Rosario rolls it over to Volpe, who throws him out, 1 down.
