Jackson chases a waist high cutter about 4-6 inches outside, 0-1 FB below and outside middle, fouled off, 0-2 Change misses well outside again, not close enough to get a chase, 1-2 Slider misses both low and away, 2-2 FB down and in, Jackson hammers it foul off 3rd Late and flies open a bit on a backdoor slider attempt, hangs outside, 3-2 Cutter below the knees, fouled. Yanks a FB low near the middle, and Cortes commits a baseball mortal sin, leadoff walk to the #9 hitter batting .082 after getting ahead 0-2, with two hitters who hit him very well due in.

The Rays much more likely to get their leadoff runner home than the Yanks have been.

That's a play a third baseman should make.

Rosario takes a FB in the zone up and away, 0-1 Takes a sweeper outside, 1-1 FB inner 3rd fouled FB just above the last one, hit hard to the left side, DJ slides to his left, can't get it, single moves Jackson to 2nd with nobody, bringing in the Rays most dangerous hitter, Paredes.

Paredes takes a slider right down the middle, 0-1 Then gets a break as Paredes tries to pull a cutter just outside, and rolls it over to LeMahieu, who starts an easy 5-4-3 DP, two outs, Jackson to 3rd.

Bad slider on the first pitch in the drop the bat happy zone; Mead drops the bat on it and belts it to deep left center, goes off the wall for a RBI double, and the Rays have a 1-0 lead.

Amazing how often we wall the number nine hitter. An .082 hitter at that…

Arozarena takes a cutter well outside, 4-5 inches called a strike anyway, 0% on Gameday a gift to Nestor, 0-1 Takes a bounced change 1-1 Takes a sweeper hanging outside 2-1 Takes another cutter outside by 4 inches, also called a strike, both calls terrible, 2-2 Forces him to chase a FB just above it, fouled Cutter down an in fouled FB in the zone inside corner above the waist fouled Makes a mistake with a change, waist high, outer 3rd, but Arozarena is early and on top, grounds it sharply to DJ at 3rd, he smothers it to his chest to make sure, throws him out, inning over.
Bottom 3, 1-0 Rays. 23 pitches for Nestor in the 3rd, 52 through 3.
9-1-2 for the Yanks: LeMahieu, then Rice and Soto. Any takers on the proposition that DJ will fall behind 0-2 then work an 8 pitch walk?

These pitchers can be almost 2 balls out side and still get strikes called…
