It's probably a little early for all these games to feel like must wins, but that is how they are feeling to me. Despite Boone's verbal support of DJL, he had to give him a day off, maybe more.

Vivas needs to be up here and leading off Apparently Vivas has not looked good when given the opportunity to play 3B.

The Dodgers tried him there and he was pretty bad plus he has a fringy arm.I know this guy gets hyped a lot but when I watched him in spring training I didn't understand the excitement. I guess he's been ok at AAA but I don't get the impression he's the guy who's going to come up and breath new life into this roster. His scouting report says he's and average fielding 2b who is probably limited to that position. He's a contact hitter which is somthing I appreciate but his numbers aren't that remarkable. If I were making the bet, I'd bet Torres finds some offense before bringing Vivas up and focus on other needs. And while it's been discussed, I don't see the Yankees moving Torres to 3B this late in the season. He might already be a mental headcase because of the lack of production in his walk year , I can't see adding additional pressure to him. Just my thoughts, but I have never stayed in a Holiday Express Inn so I could be wrong.

Very good chance they improve 2 positions with that move Torres cant be any worse then what we have at 3B with (DJL and Cabrera) so thats an Upgrade Vivas offensive could very well be better then Torres so far this season ... and could potentially leadoff Gleybers having a terrible season ... I dont he will get any worse if he's moved to 3B Yankees cant wait until he is gone to see what they have in Vivas

When I was looking up some numbers on Vivas, I noticed that Peraza is no longer ranked as a top 30 Yankee prospect. I still think he qualifies as a prospect despite a cup of coffee in the bigs. Man that is one big drop in a relatively short period for a guy who was at one point considered the SS of our future.

He doesnt strikeout often and he can steal an occassional base What harm is there bringing him up when you have 2 guys DJL and Cabrera who are terrible? Do you think he'll hit lower than .180 with a sub .500 OPS?

I really don't know much about Vivas, but I was impressed offensively & defensively with both Durbin & Cowles when I saw them in AZFL. Both are better gloves than Vivas. I've advocated moving Gleyber to 3B going back to the YES board...but not mid-season. Although many pro talent evaluators projected him to eventually move to 3B, he hasn't played an inning there since he turned pro. But I have no doubt he'd handle it by working on it during the off-season. That said, he's actually looked pretty good at 2B this year.

Maybe you and I have been watching different games. As I've said, Gleyber has actually looked very good at 2B lately. It's his offense that's been the problem, although over the past month (20) games he's looked a lot better... .284 / .347 / .418 / .765. Whether the Yanks will/should make an effort to sign him will depend on his offensive production the rest of the year. If they do, it will/should be with the idea of moving him to 3B.

This afternoon, the Rays send hard-throwing righty Shane Baz out to make his 3rd start after spending nearly 2 years on the IL with elbow injuries and Tommy John surgery and the rehab after the surgery. It will be his 2nd start against the Yanks in a row. He was so-so in the first one 10 days ago, forced out in the 5th inning unable to make it through 5 to qualify for the win, Despite being staked to leads of 3-0 and 5-2. I gave his history, his repertoire and his name game before that start, and as he hasn't pitched since that game, the only new info is what he threw in that game, and how the Yanks fared against it.
Repertoire: In that start against New York, Baz threw 68 pitches, 28 fastballs averaging 96.5 and topping out at 98.8, 28 sliders averaging 88, 8 curves averaging 84.5 and 4 changeups averaging 89.6. He got 9 whiffs, 6 on the FB, 2 on the slider and 1 on the curve, and 10 called strikes, 5 on the FB, 4 on the slider and 1 on the curve. His CSW for the game was a basically MLB average 28% and his swinging strike rate was a better than average 13%. The Yanks hit the FB pretty well, despite its velocity, the average exit velo off the FB was 100.2, off the slider 89.2 and off the curve 88.0. The Yanks didn't put any of the 4 changeups in play, so they might see more of them today. The overall average exit velocity was a subpar 93.6. He left the game in the 5th after a leadoff single and a 1 out walk to Soto.
This is Baz' 4th career start against the Yanks; he hasn't gone 5 in any of the 1st three. He's 0-0 with a 3.86 ERA in the past starts. In 11 2/3 innings, he's allowed 11 hits, 5 runs, all earned, 4 HR, 5 BB and struck out 15. His WHIP against them is 1.371, and the team quadruple slash line against Baz is .239/.314/.522/.835. In that start 10 days ago, he went 4 1/3 innings to get a no-decision, allowing 6 hits, 3 runs, all earned, 2 HR, 1 BB and struck out 5.
Reviewing his name game quickly: the best Shane in MLB history is outfielder Shane Victorino, although either of the two pitches Shane Bieber or Shane McClanahan might surpass Victorino, as might Baz himself if he can stay on the field. He's the only Baz in MLB history.

I'll probably watch except for a quick trip to the grocery store but the Yankees right now are not enjoyable to watch. No team is going to win every game. Players have ups and downs we have to live with. The problem is Cashman is paying a lot of money to players that are not performing and we have seen this for the last few years.

The Yanks send out Marcus Stroman to try to re-take the lead in the series. After a so-so first 8 starts (2-2, 3.80 ERA), like the rest of the rotation, Stroman had a hot run; he went 4-0 with a 1.70 ERA in his next 6 starts. The last 5 starts have gone poorly: 1-2 with a 5.68 ERA. On the season, he's 7-4 with a 3.51 ERA. In 19 starts, he's pitched 105 innings, allowing 92 hits, 45 runs 41 earned, 15 HR, 47 BB, and struck out 78. His WHIP is a below average 1.324, mainly because he can't come in the zone very often with his medicore stuff or it gets hit hard, so he has to get batters to chase out of the zone. As a result, he's tied for 3rd most BB in the AL by a pitcher at 47, has the 2nd highest BB per 9 innings rate at 4.0, and his K/BB ratio is now the worst in the league among 39 eligible starters. It's extremely difficult for a starting pitcher in the contemporary game to succeed on a consistent basis if he can't at least strike out 2 hitters for every one he walks. At 1.66 K per BB, Stroman is way below even that low bar for success.
Against the Rays, Stroman has been mediocre in 18 previous starts. In 104 1/3 innings, he's allowed 110 hits, 58 runs, 52 earned, 13 HR, 34 BB and struck out 85. His WHIP against Tampa is a poor 1.380 and their team's quadruple slash line against Marcus is .266/.328/.424/.752. His most recent start against the Rays was a typical "successful" start for him these days. He gave up just one run, but lasted only 4 1/3 innings, giving up 7 hits and 2 BB and striking out just 2 batters. Grisham drove in both runs, and the bullpen put up 4 2/3 shutout innings, good enough for the Yanks to get a win, even if Stroman couldn't stay in long enough to qualify for the W.
