Yesterday afternoon, Taj Bradley and the Rays humbled Nestor Cortes and the Yanks. Nestor had a decent first 3 innings, but fell apart against the bottom of the Rays order in the 4th, giving a walk to the weak-hitting Walls and a 3-run HR to the atrocious-hitting Alex Jackson. Two more solo HR chased Cortes from the game in the 5th. Slag-arm Josh Maciejewski gave up the 2nd of Arozarena's two HRs, allowing the Rays last two runs. Meanwhile, After swiftly thwarting mild rally attempts in the 1st and 2nd, Taj Bradley sailed through 7 scoreless innings on 1 hit and 2 BB, striking out 5. He didn't allow a hit after Ben Rice's leadoff double in the first and retired the last 11 hitters he faced. By the bottom of the 5th, the Yanks had stopped trying hard, and Jays walked all over the Yanks, 9-1.
The Yanks loss was their 19th in the last 28 games and dropped them back to 18 games over at the century mark, 59-41.

In other AL East action, Tigers' catcher Jake Rogers broke open a 1-0 game with a grand slam as part of a 6-run 6th inning, and the Tigers beat the Jays for the 2nd straight game, 7-3. Tigers starter Reese Olson had to leave the game after two innings with shoulder soreness, so Alex Faeda got his 5th win of the season with 2 scoreless innings in relief of Olson. Yusei Kikuchi took the loss the drop to 4-9 on the season. Just as they did last night again Eovaldi, the O's got to Rangers' starter Max Scherzer early and hard, scoring 4 runs in the 2nd, and the O's were never really challenged after that, bulding up a 7-2 lead on their way to an 8-4 win, winning the series as well. Jordan Westburg both had 3 hits and 2 RBI, with Westburg hitting his 16th HR this season. Grayson Rodriguez pitched 6 solid innings, allowing just 2 hits and striking out 8, to get 12th win of the season. After the game, Scherzer ominously complained vaguely of "arm fatigue". In LA, the Dodgers came from behind 3 times, including 1 in the 9th to tie the game at 4, 2 in the 10th answering 2 that the Red Sox got, and pushing across the winning run in the 11th on a walkoff single by catcher Will Smith with 1 out. Blake Treinen got the win with a scoreless inning, while embedded Yankee Greg Weissert spoiled a bit day for Tyler O'Neill (2 HR and 4 RBI) give blowing the 2-run lead in the 10th and giving up the single to Smith in the 11th.
The Yanks' loss cost them another game against the O's and Rays, but not the Red Sox and Jays. They're now 2 behind Baltimore, 4 1/2 ahead of the Sox, 9 ahead of the Rays, and 14 ahead of the Jays.

Elsewhere in the AL East today, the Jays, O's and Red Sox all complete their series, while the Yanks have the wraparound game tomorrow afternoon. The Tigers will send rookie Keider Montero (1-2, 5.47 ERA) to the mound to try to complete a sweep of the Jays in Toronto at 1:37 pm. Kevin Gausman (7-8, 4.50 ERA) will try to salvage the final game for the Jays. In Arlington at 2:35 pm, the Rangers will try to avoid a sweep at the hands of the visiting O's. Baltimore will start Dean Kremer (4-5, 4.42 ERA) looking for his first quality start in 6 games. The Rangers will oppose with ex-Yankee Andrew Heaney (3-10, 3.79 ERA). Heaney had pitched a lot better than his record, in his last 4 starts, he has an ERA of 2.38, and a K/BB of 26/6, but just one win to show for it. And in the ESPNSundayNightMakeYouWantToKickInYourScreenAwfulCast™ Game of the Week at 7:10 pm, the Red Sox will send the red-hot Kutter Crawford (6-7, 3.07 ERA) out to try to avoid getting swept. He's thrown 7 shutout innings his last two games, giving up a total of just 7 hits, and has allowed just 1 ER in his last 20 innings in 3 starts, winning all three. The Dodgers turn to ex-Yankee James Paxton (7-2, 4.38 ERA) to try to win their 3rd in a row after closing the first half losing 6 out of 7. Paxton has been very bad in his last 3 starts, giving up 14 ER in 12 2/3 innings.
And, at 1:37 pm this afternoon at the Stadium, it's Baz vs. Stroman. And now as teams have played just 2 or 3 games since last Sunday, a bare-bones version of the Sunday Standings™...

It would be a risk for the Yankees and unfair to Torres to ask him in the middle of the season to play a position he never played before.

I'm not the biggest Stroman fan but right now I think he's probably more reliable than Cortez or Rodon and he would earn my gratitude with a gem today.

Kay says Stroman's "given you everything you could've wanted". Not really, Mikey. But he has given all he has left and goes out there to battle with what he has, every game. Unfortunately, his stuff is greatly diminished from prime. I can't fault his smarts, competitiveness and effort. But unless he can find another adjustment, he's running out of rope, stuff-wise.

It would be a risk for the Yankees and unfair to Torres to ask him in the middle of the season to play a position he never played before. Not a fan of Torres anymore, but this is absolutely true. Moving him to 3rd out of the blue right now would unfair to him, and to the team.
