I'm working at 4 today so will try to catch some of it. Rolling out the same dead wood with no better option really is depressing.

Torres on the pine, Oswaldo at 2nd and DJ back in the lineup. When the Yanks resigned DJ, I bet they never thought he would be batting 9th.

Doesn't look like a lineup that will score many runs but you never know. I don't like Rice leading off and I don't like Wells in the 4 hole, but I don't think there are many better options.

As bad as the lineup looks the biggest issue today is Carlos Rodon. Anyone here think he makes it to the 6th ?

If this was thew NFL 2/3 of the team would be CAP and waiver cuts.

In the series finale this afternoon, the Rays send finesse righty Zack Littell out to try to win the series, 3 games to 1. Littell started against the Yanks on May 11th, so no need to rehash his career. Littell has pitched quite poorly since then, going 1-4 in 11 starts with an ERA of 5.26, but he's had four decent starts in his last 5 games, the exception being a 7-run pounding in 4 innings that the Rangers gave him two starts ago. On the season, Littell has made 19 starts, and is 3-6 with a 4.26 ERA. The Rays are 9-10 in those 19 starts. In 101 1/3 innings, he's allowed 120 hits, 51 runs, 48 earned, 14 HR, 19 BB and has struck out 94. His WHIP on the season is a sub-par 1.372.
Littell is making his 3rd career start against the Yanks today. He won both of the first two, but didn't really dominate in either one. In 11 2/3 innings, he's allowed 8 hits, 6 runs, all earned, 3 HR, 3 BB and struck out 7. His WHIP against the Yanks is very good, 0.94, and the team quadruple slash line against him is a strange .191/.227/.429/.656. In the game on May 11th, Littell got his 2nd win of the season, going 5 2/3 innings, allowing 3 hits, 2 run (earned), 2 BB and striking out 3. The Rays won that one, 7-2.
Repertoire: Littell is a junkballing 5-pitch righty relying on command and control. He throws a 4-seamer, sinker, slider, sweeper and a splitter. The 4-seamer gets average movement, the sinker gets below average drop, the slider drops much less than the average slider, but the sweeper gets near-elite drop. The splitter gets considerably better than average drop as well. None of his 5 pitches get unusual break, glove-side or arm-side. By run values, the slider is a big plus, the sweeper and splitter are minuses, and the other two pitches are basically average. He's similar to Marcus Stroman, in that his FB has below average velocity and spin, he gets below average extension, his hard hit rate is worse than average, his barrel rate much worst than average, but his chase rate is quite high; he succeeds by getting hitters to swing at bad pitches out of the zone. As the barrell rate suggests, his line drive rate is well above average, his ground ball rate is below average, and his flyball rate is above average. His popup rate is roughly MLB average, as is his HR per flyball rate, and his BABIP, but his strand rate is well above average. His swinging strike rate is average, his called strike rate and CSW rate are just a bit below average. His ERA estimators think his ERA should be about 4.00 rather than 4.26. The pitch mix so far this year: slider 87 about 36% of the time, splitter 88 about 23%, 4-seamer averaging 92-3 about 21%, sinker 92 about 15%, and sweeper 79-80 about 5%.
Reviewing his name game quickly: the best Zack is probably Zack Greinke, although Zack Wheeler has a small chance to surpass Greinke, and the best Littell is the only other Littell in big league history, and a backhanded Yankee fan favorite to boot: reliever Mark Littell, who gave up the solo HR to Chris Chambliss that ended game 5 of the 1976 ALCS, giving the Yanks their first pennant in 12 years.

The Yanks unenthusiastically send out Carlos Rodon to try to earn a split of the series. After a pretty good first two-and-a-half months, he's been awful since mid-June. The Yanks have lost his last 6 starts and in those games, Rodon is 0-5 with an ERA of 9.67 and a WHIP of almost 2.00, allowing 40 hits and 9 HR in 27 innings. On the season, Rodon is 9-7 in 20 starts with an ERA of 4.63. In 107 innings, he's allowed 104 hits, 57 runs, 55 earned, 20 HR, and 33 BB, with 113 K's. His WHIP is a below average 1.280.
Against the Rays, Rodon has made 7 starts and has pitched badly. He's 0-3 with an ERA of 5.34, and in 32 innings, he's allowed 32 hits, 20 runs, 19 earned, 5 HR, and 23 BB, while striking out 37. His WHIP against them is terrible: 1.719, and the Rays team quadruple slash line against him is just plain bad all the way across: .267/.392/467/.859. His only start against the Rays this year was the 5th loss in a row. Rodon needed 95 pitches to make it through 4 innings, allowing 5 hits, 4 runs, all earned, 1 HR, 2 BB and struck out 5 in a 5-3 Yankees loss in Tampa 13 days ago.

Yesterday afternoon, Shane Baz pitched poorly for 3 1/3 innings but the Yanks couldn't take advantage, falling behind 5-0 through 6 1/2 innings. Kevin Cash went to his pen early and often, finally finding the pitcher who didn't have it. Oddly enough, it was Jason Adam, who's having a great season, but gave up a 3 run HR in the 7th to Aaron Judge to make it a game again. The teams traded runs in the 9th and the Yanks got the tying run to the plate for both Judge and Wells, but neither could come through against Peter Fairbanks, who finished things for his 18th save. Marcus Stroman pitched decently, giving up 2 solo HR and an unearned runs in 5 1/3 innings, but the Rays, 13th in the AL in homers, hit 4 of them for the 2nd straight day for a 6-4 win. The loss was the Yanks 20th in 29 games, and dropped them back to 17 games over .500 at 59-42.
In other AL East action, Spencer Horwitz tied it up with an RBI single in the 5th and Ernie Clement had his own RBI single in the 6th for the eventual game-winner, as the Jays salvaged the final game of a 3-game series againist the Tigers, 5-4. Kevin Gausman pitched 6 2/3 so-so innings for his 8th win and ex-Yankee Chad Green converted his 7th save with 1 2/3 perfect innings. Also averting a sweep were the Texas Rangers, who got a 3-run HR by Johan Heim in the 4th, and withstood a 2-run HR by Anthony Santander (his 27th) off of ex-Yankee David Robertson, and held on to win against the O's, 3-2. Ex-Yankee Andrew Heaney started and made it through 5 scoreless inning for just his 4th win of the season against 10 losses, lowering his ERA to 3.60, and Kirby Yates, having a remarkable comeback season, lowered his ERA to 1.02 with a 1-2-3 9th with 2 K's for his 17th save. In LA, the Dodgers' Evan Phillips probably lost the closer's job for good by nearly blowing a 6-run lead in the 9th against the Red Sox, but new closer Daniel Hudson bailed him out, and the Dodgers held on to win 9-6, completing the sweep of Boston. The Dodgers built the lead by hitting 5 home runs off the recently untouchable Kutter Crawford, and ex-Yankee James Paxton made it through 5 so-so innings for his 8th win of the season. Hudson came in with 1 out, a 4-run lead and bases loaded, then gave up one run on a force out at 2nd before getting Dominic Smith to fly out to deep left to end it for his 6th save of the season.
The Yanks' loss cost them another game to the Rays and Jays, but not the O's and Sox. They remain 2 games behind the O's and 4 1/2 ahead of Boston, but the Rays and Jays are now 8 and 13 games back, resprectively.
