Jomboy says this lineup may be a cry for help from Boone to the front office:
Maybe, but I don't think the Yanks have enough resources to trade for multiple quality hitters and a top reliever or two, not without giving up Dominguez, which I wouldn't do. Great story, though.

Since Judge is seeing a possible 62+ HR season fast slipping away, shouldn't Yankee management consider "asking" Boone to bat Soto behind Judge, just so that fans will continue to show up to the games? I mean, it's only a matter of time before the less "baseball knowledgeable" Yankee fans will figure out the fact that nobody is going to pitch to Judge anymore for the rest of this season, as long as they continue to put "automatic outs" behind him. So they can stop pitching to Soto instead? Especially righties? I actually agree with this, and would've had my lineup that way from the start of the season, just to avoid so many GIDP from Judge. But the problem doesn't disappear in the 4-5-6 spots until Stanton/Rizzo/Dominguez get healthy and are put in the lineup.

OK, notifications checked and responded to, so I'm going to get going. See you tomorrow evening for the series finale, before the wicked road trip to Fenway and Philly. Yanks might be closer to 10 games over than 20 by the time this stretch is over, and might in a dogpile fight for a wild card by then, instead of challenging the O's for 1st, though that's unlikely. Good night to all. Bye.

If you want to be a "qwik genius" like me, kaybli, open the gamefeed for the Yankee game on the scoreboard at Baseball Savant. On the main game page and Exit velocity charts, they list the "How many parks is that a HR in?" info on every HR, deep extra base hit or error, or deep flyout. I just keep that page open as one the pages that I use every night for the game thread. Shhh, don't give your secrets away qwik!
I kid.

I just wonder if any manger in baseball would have sandwiched Soto and Judge with J.A. Jones and J.D. Davis in a high profile game like this one other than Boone? Blame that on Boone or the vaunted "analytics" team ? Or the guy who put the roster together

I didn't have a problem with Jones leading off, heck Rice was really struggling and there was a tough lefty on the mound. We've tried everyone else in the 1 hole and no one has gotten the job done. Davis 4 was a headscratcher. I know they were hoping he would be one of Cash's lightening in a bottle moves, but it's obvious why he's been let go by bad teams. Maybe play DJ at 1st and Cabrera at 3rd if Rice needs a day off.

Grant it there are limited options but no way you slot Davis behind Judge. They pitched around him all night until the 9th. No protection, The worst thing he could have done is put either Torres or Verdugo in the cleanup spot. At least they are major league ball players and can get a hit now and then. Both Davis and Jones stink. And yes Cashman should be called out for putting this roster together.

Blame that on Boone or the vaunted "analytics" team ? Or the guy who put the roster together Brian Cashman should have retired a decade ago when people still thought he was smart. He's stayed on long enough to prove hic critics correct.

As I say, I open all those pages because the information helps me try to keep up with the game, analytically. It adds some interesting info to go with the bare-bones PBP.

JD Davis batting fourth was the last straw. Boone should never manage another game. Then the announcers acted shocked that he walked three times. Completely screwed him up for that ninth inning at bat. We paid for that 2003 homer enough. Get rid of this clown.

Lots of frustration with Boone and Cash. If the Yankees continue to struggle and Boone becomes the Lamb, I wonder how that affects Soto's mindset about returning to Pinstripes. Will he see a team in disarray or a Team trying to get better. Heck, maybe he becomes Lebron-like and Cash lets him pick the new manager if he stays.

would be surprised if they do it but certainly could be some merit to flip-flopping soto & judge.
not gonna kill boone for putting davis in the lineup. he's on the team and guessing if he was ever gonna use him it would be against a LH starter especially with rice struggling mightily going 4-40 w a 40% K rate. hoped to catch some lightning but yeah batting 4th was ridiculous. zero protection for judge.
between the 3 of them (davis, jones & narvaez), they K'd in 6 of 8 AB stranding 9 runners. so much for stacking the lineup w RH bats. and yeah it's on cashman for constructing a team with so little real depth.
with the struggles of the 3 veterans - torres, verdugo & DJ and injuries to rizzo & stanton (who was actually doing ok), you have 5 underachieving positions in the lineup. can't win w 2 guys.

That’s my fear if we sign Soto. We’ll scrimp at other positions even more than we do now…
