The Subway Series is a little more than an hour from first pitch and Michael Kay is talking about the New Jersey Football Jets. Has baseball really lost that much appeal to the average sports listener? I don’t know if it’s important or not. When you look at our line up for the day, it appears we’re playing a beer league softball game in which we’re so over-matched that we’ve decided to let the scrubeenies all start a game… it’s almost comical, closer to sac than happy… When JD Davis went on the IL, I thought perhaps we’d seen the last of him… but here he is with a start… I may be the only one that thinks Jamai Jones could hit if he played regularly, so there’s that for me… Jones has never played a full season professionally, except in 2023 (almost entirely at AAA). He really got the worst end of the stick in 2020 with COVID. Though many players lost a development season, they played "unofficially". Jones was on the Angels' taxi squad and only got to appear in 3 games, effectively losing an entire season. In 2023, Jones got 445 plate appearances and hit .268 with a .879 OPS. However, 60% or so of those PAs came in the hitter friendly PCL where he hit .293. When you look at his IL and MLB stats, he hit .232 and .200 respectively. Of course, 2024 has been another year of stalled development for Jones, as he sits on the bench without a real role. To his credit, .256 and a .736 OPS isn't terrible for his role. I honestly wouldn't be upset if they platooned him and Verdugo, at least until Verdugo breaks out of his funk.

What a lineup! Jahmai Jones leading off! JD Davis hitting cleanup! loading w RH hitters. rice is 4-40 with a 40% K rate. obviously that honeymoon is over. grisham also sits against the lefty (though his splits are slightly better) but jones is hitting .256 - the best out of the lot. wells the nite off after 4 games in a row with the lefty hitting.
it's a sorry state of affairs but can't criticize boone here. he's trying to put out the best lineup he can. guess you could dh wells and put ocab in but guessing he wants to get the other guys into a game. you never know ...

Is this really the lineup?! Yep, so we can probably expect 7-8 runs since it looks like pure rubbish. Hey Donnie -- are you back from Asia yet? I was trying to keep tabs on where you were -- I sort of recall you mentioning Singapore, KL and Hanoi, places I have enjoyed myself in the past. Sounds like one serious journey. What else was on the itinerary if I may ask? I actually care about other people's travels!

O's take a 1-0 lead in the 1st on a RBI single by Westburg. 1-0 Baltimore, bottom 1 in Miami.

Started out in Singapore visiting my brother-in-law, then to Bali, Thailand, and finished up in Hanoi. Quite an experience, but I have to say, I've never been built for that level of humidity. In Hanoi, it was flat-out oppressive. We arrived back in Omaha to temps in the low-80s the last several days, but we're heading back up to the mid-90s starting tomorrow. At least the humidity is lower.

For what it is worth, I will be at the game on Wednesday. Doesn't sound like much, but I live in Chicago and am visiting my daughter who lives in Montclair, NJ. I have never been to the new stadium and she surprised me with tickets!!! Hopefully, they will win today and go for a sweep tomorrow. I hope you see a better game than I did last month when I went to the Stadium for the first time and the Yankees gave up 17 runs to Baltimore. Have a great time!

Quintana is such an enigma. Now 35, he’s always been thought of as a tough lefty despite never winning more than 13 games and a life time mark of 96-99, albeit with a fine 109+ career ERA. I recall when the Yanks were trying for him at the time the White Sox had him…

On the bench: Grisham is 1-3 with a solo HR, pitchers Cole and Weaver have facted Quintana as well; Cole is 1-2 with a K, Weaver is 0-1. Hey, given the lineup on the scorecard, maybe they should take out Verdugo and start Cole in left?
Obviously, your comment about Cole is a joke, but it's pretty clear even Boston sat Verdugo when Quintana was pitching. I wouldn't be against putting Jones in LF and DH-ing Wells to give him a half day off. Wells is actually hitting. Or, you could put Cabrera in LF. Not a bad idea, nw. Don't want to rely on Jones, but Verdugo is going so poorly, it might come to that, at least vs. lefties. And good evening to you.

We loved Bali, just beautiful, and Hanoi really surprised me with being such a nice city. Of course everything is under control in Singapore. I remember them selling t-shirts that read "Singapore -- it's a fine city! Fine for littering, fine for chewing gum, fine for making noise" etc. Still worth visiting. Kudos for your adventurous trip!

I'd like to know whose cover of "Summer in the City" YES is using in its opener.

Gotta try something.

How was the food in Thailand? Thai food is one my favorites. Thai is really good - lots of bold flavors. Vietnam was my favorite, cuisine-wise. Incredible the amount of food you get for almost nothing over there. The four of us could get HUGE dishes of food in Vietnam for the equivalent of like $25.
