The Mets send big veteran lefty Sean Manaea to the mound tonight to try to complete a 4-game season's sweep of the Yankees. He pitched against the Yanks in the first series at Citifield, so no need to rehash his history here. He pitched well in that start, and since then, pitched three more very good games, before getting knocked around by Marlins in his last start right after the All-Star Break. He's 1-1 in 4 starts since the game against the Yanks with an ERA of 3.24. This year, Manaea is having a solid bounceback season. In 19 starts, he's 6-4 with an ERA of 3.73. In 101 1/3 innings, he's allowed 85 hits, 46 runs, 42 earned, 10 hR, 41 BB and struck out 97. His WHIP on the season is an slightly better-than-average 1.243. (MLB overall WHIP is currently 1.266).
In his last start against the Yanks in the first series in Queens, Manaea frustrated the Yanks with 5 shutout innings, allowing just 2 hits, but walking 5, getting just 3 K's. He got 3 ground ball double plays in the 5 innings, getting out of significant jams in the 1st and 4th. He's making his 8th career start against the Yanks tonight, and including the win in June, he's 2-3 againist them with an ERA of 3.89. In 39 1/3 innings, he's allowed 31 hits, 17 runs, all earned, 5 HR, and 15 BB, while striking out 43. His WHIP against them is a solid 1.170, and the team's quadruple slash line against Manaea is .218/.296/.373/.669.
Repertoire: Manaea throws 6 pitches, relying heavily on his best pitch, the sinker (which got both double plays Verdugo hit into in the game in June). He also throws a 4-seamer, both the slider and the sweeper, a change (that got the 3rd GIDP from Trevino) and a cutter. The sinker drops a bit more than average but gets good "tail" toward the glove side. The 4-seamer gets below average "rise" but elite "run" into lefties and away from righties. The sweeper gets average drop but less than average sweep. The Slider gets much less drop than average and also less break, which is probably he uses both the sweeper and cutter more. The cutter gets average drop and less side-break as well. The change is pretty much average in its movement all the way around. In run values, the sinker is an elite plus at +11 runs. the cutter, 4-seam and slider are a little better than average, while the change and sweeper are minueses per 100 pitches as much as the sinker is a plus, but he uses the sinker more than twice as often. The pitch mix so far this season: Sinker averaging 92-3 about 40% of the time, and he mixes the other pitches well. Sweeper 78 about 17%, change 85-6 about 13%, cutter 88 about 12%, 4-seamer 92-3 about 10%, and slider 85 about 8%. In the game against the Yanks in June, he used the sinker, slider and sweeper much more often than that, and the other 3 pitches much less. In terms of batted balls, his line drive rate and flyball rates are a bit above average, the ground ball rate a bit lower, and the popup rate is lower as well (6% vs the MLB average around 10%). He's been very slightly lucky with BABIP and HR/FB percentage, and very slightly unlucky with strand percentage. His ERA estimators say he should be around 4.15, instead of 3.73. His hard hit, barrell rate and average exit velocity are all slightly worse than MLB average. His swinging strike rate is about MLB average, but his called strike rate and CSW are below average as is his K-BB% because of his relatively high BB rate (4th highest of 34 qualifed NL starters).

Reviewing his name game quickly: We've done his names before; there have been no other Manaeas in MLB history, and among 38 major league Seans, Manaea is the best pitcher by total bWAR, ex-Yankee batting coach Sean Casey has the most hitting bWAR, but current Braves' catcher Sean Murphy should pass both of them if he can hold his starting job for another 1-3 years.

The Yanks send Gerrit Cole to the mound looking to extend his current run to 3 straight outstanding starts, and to gain a bit of revenge for the pasting the Mets gave him back in June. Since that game, Cole has had 3 good ones and 1 bad one, going 3-0 with an ERA of just under 3.00. In 6 starts since coming off the IL, Cole is 3-1 with an ERA of 4.60. In 29 1/3 innings, he's allowed 31 hits, 15 runs, all earned, 6 HR, 10 BB and has struck out 34. He's reduced his once sky-high WHIP, but it's still a poor 1.398.
Cole's start against the Mets at Citifield was his 2nd off the IL, and he must've been going through some kind of dead-arm phase, because he had nothing that night. His fastball velocity dropped into the low 90's in the 2nd inning with reading down to as low as 91-2. The velocity came back some in the 3rd and 4th, but he wasn't right the whole night, as the Mets proved by crushing him for a career-high 4 home runs. He was knocked out after 4, giving up 7 hits, 6 runs, walking 4 and striking out nobody. The Yanks rallied later in the game, but fell short 9-7. Even before that start, Cole had a lot of trouble when he pitched against the Mets. In 8 starts, he's 2-3 with an ERA of 6.64. In 40 2/3 innings, he's allowed 54 hits, 31 runs, 30 earned, 11 HR, 16 BB with 42 K's. His WHIP against them is a terrible 1.721. Even if you take out that nightmare start last time, his ERA and WHIP against the Mets would still be 5.89 and 1.609, respectively. Their team quadruple slash line against Cole is .321/.384/.595/.979, which is basically Joe DiMaggio's career slash line: .325/.398/.579/.977.

Last night, Luis Gil fought the Mets to a standstill for 5 innings, using his new-found slider very well again, but Tonkin gave McNeil a FB that was too fat, and he put it in the Yankee bullpen to give the Mets a 3-1 lead in the 6th. The Yanks put at least one man on base in all 9 innings, but went 1-9 with RISP, leaving 11 men on base, and lost to the Mets 3-2. The Mets supposedly weak pen held the Yanks to just 2 hits and 1 run the last 4 innings, those both given up by the exceptionally unclutch Ottavino, and pitched around Judge all night until the 9th, when hard throwing lefty faced him as the go-ahead run at the plate and beat him, freezing him with a 2-strike FB in a location where Judge misjudged it as a slider moving inside, but right on the corner for the ꓘ. One Ben Rice ground out later, the Mets had wrapped up the season's series with their 3rd straight win against the Yanks. The loss was the Yanks 21st in the last 31 games, dropped them back to 17 games over .500 at 60-43, and blew a chance to close the gap in the East to 1/2 game.
In other AL East action, the O's and Marlins did all their scoring in the 1st three innings; it was 6-3 Marlins going to the 4th, and it stayed that way the rest game. The Marlins knocked out veteran righty Albert Suarez with 8 hits and 6 ER in 2+ innings to drop to 5-4 on the season. The Marlins tried to let rookie Kyle Tyler struggle through the 5th, but after 4 2/3 innings and 94 pitches in which he allowed 9 hits and 3 runs, they took him out after a 2-out single in the 5th. The Marlins bullpen was fantastic the rest of the way: four relievers combined for 4 1/3 hitless, scoreless innings. The only baserunner for the O's the last 4 innings was a HBP with 2 outs in the 9th, but the supposedly on-the-block closer Tanner Scott got Ramon Urias to groundout to end the game for his 17th save of the season. The O's have failed to put the Yanks away recently, losing 7 of 10 and 15 of 26, while the Marlins won their 4th game in the last 6. In Toronto, the Rays used one of their classic bullpen games to beat the Jays, 4-2. Armstrong opened, but "follower" Tyler Alexander got the win with 3 scoreless innings. Pete Fairbanks had a 1-2-3 9th for his 19th save. Brandon Lowe hit a 2-run HR off of Jose Berrios in the 5th that gave the Rays a 3-0 lead and provided the winning margin, and Berrios struggled with his command, walking 6 in 4 2/3 innings to drop to 8-8 on season with an ERA of 4.08 after a very hot start. The Rays are back over .500 for the first time in 3 weeks, and have now won 7 of 11. The Jays have now lost 5 of 7 and seem to be doing everything they can to convince management to sell of their players. The Red Sox made early work of Rockies' starter Ty Bleccchhh, uhh, Blach, knocking him out in the 3rd, with 7 hits and 6 runs, and that was all the scoring in the game. The Sox won 6-0 behind 7 innings of 5-hit shutout ball (in Coors!) by Cooper Criswell, with Tyler O'Neill doing the biggest damage: a 2-run HR the 3-run 1st and a solo shot in the 3rd. The win was the Sox first in five games since the break.
The Yanks' loss kept them 1 1/2 back of the O's and 13 1/2 up on the Jays, but the Sox and Rays got back to 4 1/2 and 8 behind them, respectively.

Elsewhere in the AL East today, the Red Sox were trying to take the series at Coors before they fly home to face the Yanks, but it didn't go very well. The Rockies scored multiple runs in each of the first four innings, knocking out Sox starter Nick Pivetta in the 3rd with a barrage of 10 hits including 2 home runs, good for 8 runs (7 earned) and won in a rout, 20-7. Rockies Brenton Doyle knocked in 5, Brendan Rogers had 4 runs, 4 hits and 2 RBI, and catcher Jacob Stallings had 3 runs, 3 hits and 4 RBI. Jarren Duran of the Red Sox was a double short of the cycle. Cal Quantrill evened his record at 7-7, which is pretty good, considering how bad the Rockies have been this season. The O's are trying to even their series in Miami against the dreadful Marlins, and have called up their other hot pitching prospect, Chayce McDermott to replace the struggling Cade Povich in their rotation; Povich was sent back to AAA just before the Break. McDermott is a pretty hard throwing lefty with a good slider and curve, and has piled up a ton of K's at AAA (129 in 94 innings), but his control is bad (54 walks as well). The Marlins should be a soft spot for McDermott to break into the majors, they're not known as a patient team at the plate, but we'll see. That game is bottom 1st, 0-0. Edward Cabrera is making his 4th start of the IL for the Marlins and is having a terrible year, injuries or not. He's 1-3 with a 7.36 ERA, and thing haven't gone much better since he returned. He's yet to make it through 5 and has given up 10 earned runs in 10 2/3 innings. He did pitch a decent game against the Mets last time out, so again, we'll see. At 7:07, the Rays and Jays play the middle game of their Series at Rogers Centre. Interesting matchup: control ace Zack Eflin (5-7, 4.14) and leading the world in fewest BB per 9 innings starts for the Rays. 27-year-old rookie, big money international signing Yariel Rodriguez (1-3, 3.78) goes for the Jays. Rodriguez has pitched much better in his last 3 starts.
And, about 20 minutes from now at the Stadium, it's Cole vs. Manaea. That does it for the preview rhetoric. See you in about 18 minutes for the game.

Cole seems frustrated early. I'm not sure if it's that he isn't getting the high pitches called or if he isn't executing and short-arming the ball.

Fb on the outside corner above the waist at 94, 1-1 Cutter high in the middle, 2-1 Lindor takes a FB where the 1st one way, high on the outer 3rd, 3-1 Misses a FB in the zone up and away at 96, 3-2. Swung under it. Fb waist high near the corner inside at 97, pulled foul off 1st. Cutter in a bad spot above and inside middle, pulled foul off 1st. 8th pitch coming... FB at the top at 96, outer 3rd, spoiled. Hanging cutter down the middle, lined hard toward the 34 hole, but that's where Torres was playing, becomes an at-'em ball first out. 104.5 on the liner.

Wow, it's not often that you give in, but he put a cutter right down the middle.

Nimmo fouls off a waist high FB on the corner inside, 0-1 FB above and inside middle, fouled back, 0-2 Takes a slider well low, inner half, started but checked in time, 1-2 Nimmo takes his timeout. Slider well low, inside corner, 2-2 Tries to clip the high outside corner with a cutter, but misses, 3-2 Another long at bat. FB starts for the high outside corner at 97, zooms just out of the zone, Nimmo chases for the K, 2 down.

Martinez goes after a 1st pitch FB, waist high on the outside corner, pops it to right, Soto jogs in and catches, inning over. Much needed one pitch out holds the count to just 16 in the 1st for Cole. Bottom 1, 0-0. Let's see if the Yanks can do better the 2nd time around against Manaea.
