For the 2nd game of the series (on FOX, unfortunately), the Sox send righty Kutter Crawford to the mound. Crawford has pitched a great game against the Yanks in each of the 1st two series, so no need to re-hash his history. The 2nd of the two starts he shut the Yanks down for 7 innings on just 68 pitches, as if he was the second coming of Greg Maddux. AFter that, he shut down the Royals more or less the same way for 7 more innings, but in his last start, the wheels fell off the express trian; Crawford surrendered 5 HR and 6 runs to the Dodgers in a game in LA just after the break. On the season, Crawford is 6-8 with a 3.37 ERA. In 20 starts and 117 2/3 innings, he's allowed 95 hits, 52 runs, 44 earned, 19 HR, and 29 BB, with 112 K's. His WHIP on the season is 1.054.
Tonight is the 7th start and 9th game of Crawford's career against the Yanks. He's 4-1 with a 1.96 ERA against them, and in 36 2/3 innings, he's allowed just 22 hits, 9 runs, 8 earned, 5 HR, and 12 bB with 39 K. His WHIP against them is a tiny 0.927, and their quadruple team slash line against him is .176/.254/.320/.574. His last game was 7 shutout innings at the Stadium not quite 3 weeks ago, giving up just 4 hits and striking out 4 in a 3-0 Sox win (the game that Gil threw 6 shutout innings using his new slider, giving up just the solo HR to Devers in the 7th).
Repertoire: No need to go over his assorment again, I did that three weeks ago. Instead, I'll go over how his assortment is different in his two outstanding starts against the Yanks from what it has been against other teams: in other words, what is Crawford doing differently against New York? On the season as a whole, Crawford has thrown 4-seamers averaging 92-3 about 34% of the time, the cutter 87-88 about 31%, the sweeper 81 about 20% of the time, the splitter 92 about 9% of the time, and the curve 77 about 6% of the time. In the two games vs. the Yankees, the FB usage was normal, 34%, the cutter was down a bit, 29%, He used the sweeper more than average in the first game, 27%, but much less than average in the 2nd, just 12%. The splitter was near normal, 7% in the first game, but more than normal, 15% in the 2nd. The Curve was average over the two games, but used more in the first game than the 2nd. So it seems that he traded breaking balls for splitters in the better 2nd game. The velocities and spin rates in the 1st game were near year-long average, except the spin rate on the curve was down some. The vertical and horizontal break on the pitches was near average as well. In the 2nd game the velocities on all five pitches were 1/2 mph, to 1 mph faster than average, the spin rates on all his pitches was also a bit higher, except the curve, which was a bit lower than normal. The Vertical and Horizontal break on his pitches was also near normal, except for the sweeper, which got less break in both directions than usual which might be why he set it aside for more splitter and cutters. Looking at the 2nd game more closely, most of his FB were above the zone, or in the upper 3rd, very few were low in the zone, or below the knees (just 3). The splitter were low or below the zone, all but 2. He got called strikes on a lot of his pitches, 25% of the them, which let to a very high CSW rate: 38%. Either the Yanks weren't aggressive enough, or they called a near-perfect game for him and the Yanks were constantly looking for a pitch they didn't get.
Reviewing his name game quickly: Therre are no other Kutters in MLB history, and the best Crawford, for the 3rd time, is Ty Cobb's long-time running mate with the Tigers, MLB all-time triples leader Sam Crawford.

The Yanks send Marcus Stroman out there, hoping to turn his recent stuggles aroound. He's 7-5 with a 3.51 ERA on the season, but hasn't won any of his last 4 starts, hasn't made it past 5 1/3 innings, with an ERA of 5.21 and a WHIP of 1.526. In 20 starts, he's pitched 110 !/3 innings, allowing 97 hits, 48 runs, 43 earned, 17 HR, 47 BB and has struck out 83 K's. His WHIP is now slightly below average at 1.305. He's trying to do this with among the worst K/BB date in all of MLB. He's allowed the 6th most walks, and his BB/9 of 3.8 is 2nd only to teammate Luis Gil's 4.2. His K/BB ratio of 1.72 is the worst of 70 qualified MLB starters, and his K-BB% is 2nd worst, better than just Chris Flexen of the White Sox.
Against the Red Sox, he's made 17 starts, and is 7-5 with an ERA of 3.69. in 102 1/3 innings, he's allowed 102 hits, 48 runs, 42 earned, 7 HR, 37 BB and struck out 77. His WHIP against them is a mediocre 1.358, and their team quadruple slash line against Stroman is .265/.329/.392/.722. Stroman's last start against the Sox was the Sunday night debacle in which Sox set a franchise record with 9 steals, 6 of them off of Stroman and Trevino. In 5 innings, he gave up 7 hits, 4 runs (earned) 4 BB and 3 K. When he left the Sox were up 4-1 on their way to a 9-3 romp.

Yesterday, Nestor Cortes had another bad game on the road, putting the team into several early holes. He gave up a run in the 1st, the Yanks got it back in the 2nd. He gave up another in the 3rd and 4th, they got those two back in the 5th. He put them behind again in the 5th, and they took him off the hook a 3rd time with a 4-run 7th on back-to-back HRs, a 3-run monster blast out of Fenway in deepest left center by Judge, 470 feet, and a solo shot to right by Wells. And the Yanks had their two best relievers ready with two days' rest, and...it didn't matter. Weaver gave Rafaela a FB he could hit, and he belted his 5th HR against the Yanks in 11 games, a 2-run shot to cut it to 7-6. In the 8th, he gave up a single and a walk, and got a pop fly from Devers and Weaver was done at 32 pitches. Holmes came in and gave Abreu a waist high sinker on the corner away, and he promptely ripped it into right center for the double that tied it up, and fell behind Yoshida 2-0, before leaving a sinker almost right down the pipe that he hammered back up the middle for the two run single that gave the Sox the lead for good. Judge opened the 9th by taking strike 1, strike 2 and strike 3, all cutters, all near or just outside the middle of the plate. Wells and Torres singled, but the wrong man, LeMahieu came up. He got ahead 2-0, but that didn't matter either. He chased a cutter inside on 2-1, then after fouling another, chased another cutter about 3-4 inches high on the inside corenr for the K. Volpe got waist high cutter on 0-1 and 0-2, and couldn't do more than foul them off, because he was trying to pull them, even the one on the outside corner. Jansen finally threw him a slider below the outer 3rd, and rather than go to right, he rolled over on it for a force play that ended the latest, and most regrettable of a long line of games that they've blown lately (when not getting blown out). Most regrettable because the 4-run rally in the 7th should have been decisive, and it wasn't even close to being. By the end of the inning, the lead was back down to 1. Before there were two outs in the 8th, they were down two, and heading down the tubes. After a four run rally in the 7th to give them a three run lead, the Red Sox got 5 against their top two relievers within the next four outs, and the Yanks couldn't rally back a fourth time. Putrid performance. The win was just the 2nd for the Sox in 7 games in the 2nd half, and the loss was the Yanks' 3rd in a row and 23rd in their last 33 games.
In other AL East activity, the Rays traded two of their veterans away, outfielder Randy Arozarena (to the Mariners) and pitch Zach Eflin (to the Orioles), and lost to the Reds in 10 innings. Cincinnati got 2 in the 1st, the Rays got the two back in the 2nd, and the game stayed that way until the top of the 10th when hit a double to left to knock in the ghost runner Slater for a 3-2 lead. Closer Alexis Diaz worked around the Rays' ghost runner with a HBP thrown in and got his 20th save. The win was the Reds 3rd in a row. In Camden Yards, the O's took a 2-0 lead into the 6th, but the Padres got a 2-run HR from Jurickson Profar, and RBI doubles by Xander Bogaerts and Jackson Merrill to take a 4-2 lead. The O's did their usual come from behind bit in the 8th, tying the game on Santander's 29th HR and a sac fly by Mountcastle, but the Padres responded with Profar's 2nd 2-run HR of the game off of O's closer Craig Kimbrel, and Padres' closer Robert Suarez got himself a vultured win after giving up the sac fly that tied it with a 1-2-3 9th, getting the red hot Santander to pop foul off 1st for the game-ender. In Toronto, the Rangers and Jaws exchanged the lead four times, but the Jays won it on a walkoff single by Ernie Clement with the bases loaded and two outs of Rangers' closer Kirby Yates. Both starters pitched poorly; 4 runs in 5 innings for the Rangers' Heaney, 5 runs in 4 1/3 innings for the Jays' Kikuchi. Clement had two RBI in the game for Toronto, Adolis Garcia hit his 18th HR and knocked in three for Texas.
Going into Staurday's games, the Yanks are still 2 behind the O's, just 3 1/2 up on the Sox, 8 ahead of the Rays, and 12 up on the Jays.

In other AL East action today, Daulton Varsho hit a grand slam in the 1st and the Jays coasted to a 7-3 win over the Rangers in Torronto, winning the series. Kevin Gausman went all the way on a 4 hitter, striking out 8 to get over .500 at 9-8 on the season. Michael Lorenzen was knocked out by the slam and fell to 5-6 for the year. Manny Machado hit 3 hits and 3 RBI on a run-scoring single and a two-run HR, and the Padres have kept tacking on runs; they went on to beat the Orioles 9-4 in Camden Yards. Mike King threw 6 1/3 innings of 2-hit, 2-run ball, striking out 9 for his 9th win against 6 losses; Dean Kremer took the loss and is 4-7 on the season. Zack Littell threw 7 shutout innings against the Reds, allowing just 3 hits a 1 walk, and got the win in a 4-0 victory over the Reds to even that series. He's now 4-7 on the season. Andrew Abbott, who shut down the Yanks at the Stadium a few weeks back, gave up 8 hits and 4 runs and took his 7th loss against 9 wins. DH Yandy Diaz and catcher Alex Jackson hit solo HRs for the Rays.
Coming into tonight's game at Fenway, the Yanks are now 1 1/2 behind the O's, 3 1/2 up on the Sox, 7 1/2 ahead of the Rays, and 11 1/2 up on the Jays.
Stroman vs. Crawford starts in about 15 minutes, so I have just enough time to sneak in The Saturday Leaders™ for July 27th...
