I was only scoreboard watching and it was still nerve wracking. Boy oh boy did we need the Yanks to come out on top this time! NOBODY needs another demoralizing loss… especially to the Red Sox! Sleep well Yankee fans! would have been a crusher to lose especially after last night.

Well, where to even begin with this one... Yanks get get two leads, blow them, tie it up 3 times after that, blow 2 of those, tie it up in the 9th on a brutal misplay of what should've been the final out, a fly to deep left by Grisham, and score the ghost runner on a good at bat for a sac fly by Wells, with Torres following with an enormous two run double for crucial insurance runs, and Holmes bent but did not crack, pitcing two shutout innings, both earning the W and saving his own win in the 10th. Yanks break the 3-game losing streak, get back to 16 games over .500 at 61-45, and win for just the 11th time in 34 games. They gain a game on both the O's and the Sox, but not the Rays and Jays, and find themselves amazingly enough just 1 game out of 1st, 4 1/2 up on the Sox again, 8 up on the Rays and 12 up on the Jays. Boy, naming the 3 stars isn't going to be easy tonight, but one thing's for sure: they ain't any of the pitchers except the last one. They also gained a game on Kansas City and Minnesota in the Wild Card standings.

Met friends down the Boardwalk. I see they pulled out a slugfest with another bad pitching performance.

Stars of the game: HM to Verdugo, who might finally be waking up in the leadoff spot: 3 hits, 3 runs, and 7 for 19 in his last 5 games. Torres, who had the huge 2-run double for crucial tack on runs, giving Holmes much-needed breathing room in the 10th. A "thank you and goodbye to your everday job" to Grisham for 2 hits and the clutch (?!?) double in the 9th that O'Neill brutally misplayed into scoring the tying run. Don't want to diminish the facts: Grisham was 1-7 vs. Jansen with 4 K's coming in, fell behind 0-2, spoiled a low cutter, took two more low, before going with a cutter on the corner away to deep left center, giving O'Neill just enough trouble for the botch.
3rd star of the game: Soto...his 2 run HR in the first and his flare single in the middle of the rally in the 8th, 2 runs, 2 RBI, another walk, but his TOOTBLAN in the 8th, running through the stop sign to get thrown out at home as the tying run, when he would've been on 3rd with just one out gets him minus points.
2nd star: Judge, solo HR in the 1st, game tying single in the 5th, RBI double in the 8th that should've set them up for the lead, and walked in the 10th and came around to score on Torres' big double.
1st star: Holmes, for pitching two scorless innings, the first to preserve the tie, and the 2nd to save his own win. He put runners on in both innings, but threw some hellacious sliders to shut the Sox down, nailing down a desperately needed W.
They're the top 3 in WPA tonight anyway except for Grisham, whose WPA of 0.34 was distorted by the timeliness of O'Neill's flub in the 9th.

The series finale is tomorrow on the ESPNPleaseLetMeWatchTheDamnGameNotInterviewsCast at 7:10 pm.
Carlos Rodon tries to prove his last start against the Rays wasn't a fluke. He got belted the six starts before that including the last time he pitched at Fenway, when he buried the Yanks in a 5-2 hole, giving up line shots all over the park. He's 10-7 on the season with a 4.42 ERA. Red Sox ace Tanner Houck tries to win the series for the Sox, he's 4th in the AL with a 2.71 ERA and is 8-6 on the season, his decent start against the Yanks a couple of weeks ago was disrupted by the rain delay.
OK, game preview down, I'm going to check notifications, whatever I have left to check.

Swinging over a cutter for a K here is the most likely result. exactly as you called ... Again, most likely does not mean certain and is not a "call", plus his ball should've been caught for the final out. Plus, not my fault that Jansen never gave him a cutter in, or down and in, or anything remotely like that after he got a called strike there on the first pitch. The Sox went with the scouting report to not give him a pitch he could pull out to right, and it worked, except O'Neill forgot to catch the ball.

It might be accurate to say each team played well enough to lose...Happy they lost it this time. true pat but we were last man standing. i'm kinda out of breath after that one. I suspect every Yankee fan feels the same way.

First things first. I still don't think the Holmes should be the Yankees Closer. But, I have to give credit where credit is due. The was a big rebound pitching performance by Holmes.
In my opinion, so far that was the biggest and most much needed win by the Yankees this season.

So I guess the team thinks Wells will out perform Agustin Ramírez. Thus the Jazz trade. Sure looks that way. Plus, the Yankees also have Rice.

Smoltz has no comment on the short low fence at Fenway. He had to mention that there would 2 more HR's if they were playing at Yankee Stadium. And no mention that if they were playing in Yankee Stadium maybe those hitters wouldn't have seen those same pitches.

I didn't put the TV on to see or hear Casey Affleck and Matt Damon. My stomach turned when they were asked to stay for another half inning. That gave me 2 reasons to root for Stroman. 1. Because I wanted the Yankees to win. 2. Because I didn't care to here what those 2 actors had to say.
