Stars of the game: HMs all over the joint...Verdugo, 1 hit, 2 BB, 2 runs scored, Volpe a 2-run HR and another hit and run scored, Wells the big 2-run triple basically knocking out Wheeler, Gil, for working hard against a good lineup, getting out of a jam or two, striking out 8 and giving up 3 in 5 1/3. Not his best game, but good enough against a tough lineup in a big-time hitters park, Tonkin for going 1 1/3, getting a first pitch DP ball from Relamuto that crushed the Phils last real chance to make a fight out of it with 1st and 3rd and 1 down in the 6th, down by 5.
3rd star: Judge, for 2 more HR, especially the one in the first that gave the Yanks the early lead, and 3 RBIs 2nd star: Chisholms for 2 HRs, the first to the opposite field in 2nd to give the Yanks a 2-run lead and giving the first real inkling that tonight would not be Wheeler's night. But even more for flashing athleticism and good hands at 3rd, and possibly proving he can handle the position the rest of the way, covering up an open sore in the Yankee lineup for the time being. 1st star: Soto, started 0-2 but still got the big-time double off a hanging curve from Wheeler in the middle of the zone on 3-2 with bases loaded, 1 out in the 5th, and the Yankees' lead down from 3 runs to 1. The game was hanging in the balance and Soto and Wells delivered with their big 2-run hits for extra bases. Yanks had 5 HR and another RBI double by Soto later on, but those two heavy blows turned out to be the big hits of the night.

OK, game 2 of the series is tomorrow at 6:40 pm, thankfully (?!?) on YES (?!?) because they've hit great and won 3 in a row on FOX, ESPN and Prime the last 3 nights). Gerritt Cole (3-2, 5.40 ERA) goes for the Yanks, trying to bounce back from the 2nd pasting he took from the Mets this season. Phillies send out their solid #2 man, Aaron Nola. He's 11-4 on the season with a 3.44 ERA, but has been very uneven in his last 8 games; 3 excellent starts, 3 so-so starts, 1 poor starts and one disastrous start. In those 8 games, Nola is 3-2 with an ERA of 4.86.
OK, one last check of notifications.

OK, that's going to do it for me for tonight. See you all tomorrow at 6:40 for game 2. Hope the Yanks add at least a reliever or two before we convene again for the game thread. Good night to all. Bye.

Orioles won first game of double header, losing the second game 6-3 in the 6th inning. So Yankees will either be .5 or 1.5 back depending on that result.

and yes the O's lose the nightcap to the jays 8-4 leaving us just a 1/2 game out. amazing the twists and turns of a season. we've now scored 40 runs over the last 4 games as the offense has come alive. and it seems contagious as everyone is taking part and maybe jazz has brought some much needed energy.
and now it's the phillies turn to struggle as they're 4-9. hopefully we've caught them during a down period.

This is the exact two-thirds point of the season. and that's after a .178 start w 4 HR 13 RBI in the first 27 games. in 79 games since .365 35 HR 85 RBI - that's just half a season.

I guess it just goes to show... you can't predict baseball, Suzyn! Hopefully our "Ace" will pick up the on the energy and start being an Ace.

Again an ex pitcher making suggestions instead of Matt Blake.

Last nigh I ended up just sitting in the recliner listening to the game on the radio and relaxing. Old School Baseball.

Again an ex pitcher making suggestions instead of Matt Blake. Last night during the broadcast they mentioned that Blake showed Gil a new grip for his slider which he's been using during his turnaround.

You can't get a bunch of guys who pitched JV ball at the same place without having guys comparing grips. It happens every day, I guess Severino and Gil are buddies and they do the same. The fact is that if Severino had a super grip that resulted in an uhittable pitch, he would use it. And if Blake knew a better way for Gil to get the slider to move, he would have taught it in ST. This stuff is just noise.

Cone used to talk about making adjustments while on the mound.

My "much ado" comment was directed to the criticism of Blake: That someone not a Yankee coach was needed to show Gil the right way to grip a slider. Pitchers are always talking and experimenting. I don't too much stock in the new grip being the sole reason for Gil's success. Nor will it be the sole reason if he has a bad start. Why was Cone always eperimenting ? I think because there is no perfect way.

I think because there is no perfect way. I think it's not that there's a "perfect" way, it's that the way constantly changes. Hitters will get used to seeing your slider and changing the grip a little or having multiple options to grip will change the action of the ball. Baseball at the MLB level is a constant adjustment.
