The Yankees are including Ben Cowles in the trade too. I really like Ben Cowles. Rochester native. Talked with him a bit last AZFL...seems like a really good kid. Wish him the best with the Cubs.

If Ben isn't added to the Cubs MLB roster in the fall, he will be in MLB Rule 5 Player Draft. Both players in the trade are in the same situation.

my socks are still on, but looks like he'll be an upgrade in the pen. he does bring swing & miss which we desperately need, has a minicule HR/9 rate, pretty much equal against LH & RH batters (at least this season), reasonable contract and 2 more years of control.
still waiting on the big one elizabeth ...

His dad Mark Sr was briefly a Yankee in 1990, his Uncle Al was a Yankee for parts of 1987-1989 seasons. Al Leiter is Jack Leiter's father. Jack & Kumar Rocker were both considered studs coming out of Vanderbilt. Doesn't seem either has lived up to those expectations. And Jack Leiter and Volpe were teammates and close friends at Delbarton School,

🤢🤮
I'm starting to agree with the fans that say the Yankees need a new GM. Didn't like the Donaldson trade, Montas trade. Now this? Maybe Neely could have helped them so that they didn't need to make a trade. If he was going to trade Neely at lest put him in a trade for a Closer.
It doesn't seem like they had any faith in Neely because they easily could have called him to see how he looked before the deadline. I had suspected that because teams seldom pitch their most precious commodities in the closer role, preferring instead to keep them on scheduled work…

FWIW. Also read a stat that he's 98th percentile in whiff rate and strikeout rate. Seems like there's a lot to like in the underlying details of his work this year. Team control via arbitration for 2025 and 2026 as well (making $1.5M this year from his first run through arbitration process). Agreed. He’s 33, but still has upside…

I think if they move Hoerner, it will likely be to open up a spot for Matt Shaw, a top 50 prospect and #2 in the Cubs organization at both MLB Pipeline and Fangraphs. But maybe they might use Cowles for this year just to see what they have, and put Shaw there next year.

Agreed. He’s 33, but still has upside… More young players gone for a vet! True enough, jeep, but Cowles was unlikely to help them this year, and had to be added to the 40-man roster in the fall, and they probably trust Neely's command to help now, and he also has to be added to the 40-man after the season. Maybe Leiter can help. I'm not happy that he's not a traditional power arm, the Yanks need 1 or 2 of those. But he's probably better than Caleb Ferguson, who he's replacing.
