One thing that is true of Cashman. He does not take chances. High risk, high pay off are not in his nature.

Leiter is the high K rate guy the Yankees were looking for, but he's a different type of high K guy. He's not like the old Rays' pens who sent out guy after guy who threw 98. He needs his offspeed to work and, as such, is certainly more prone to throw a "hanger".
If the Yankees were going to go the route of fixing their pen problems with middle career guys with a track record but aren't terribly exciting, why did they not give Neely a shot. He's a fastball/slider guy with a high K rate and only 24 years old. I think he could have been a value add over the Hill, Tonkin, Ferguson clan that were in our pen.

He may not end up being Mariano Rivera, but I could certainly see him becoming a Nelson or Stanton.

His command is going to have to be fixed if he’s going to get there…I just never got excited about him…

In your post you mention that he’s “only” 24 years old. In my thoughts he’s “already” 24 years old…🤓 But either one of us could be right, so peace, buddy!…

He didn't start in the minors until age 22 after finishing his career at tOSU. He spent his age 22 season at low A and then was promoted to high A for a cup of coffee. His age 23 season was spent primarily at high A but he had a good sized cup of coffee at AA. He started this season at AA and earned a promotion to AAA, still playing in a league below league average age.

I doubt they care about his age.

Thanks for the reminder…
