The Jays had the day off yesterday after selling off multiple players at the deadline. They'd lost 3 of 4 to the O's in the series that ended on Wednesday. They're still well in last place, and since losing 7 in a row in late June, they've milled back and forth between 5 and 10 games under. Coming into this series, they're 50-59, 14 1/2 games back of both the Orioles and the Yanks, 8 games behind the Red Sox and 5 1/2 behind the Rays. They're actually better than they should be, because they're 11th in the league runs scored, and 14th in runs allowed, and at -85 runs on the season, their Pythagorean record is 46-63, 4 games worse than they are. This is their last series of the season with the Yanks, and they're 5-5 against New York, primarily on the strength of three starters who almost always pitch well against them: Gausman, Bassitt and Kikuchi, as well as poor pitching by the Yankee starters in several of the losses. The Yanks appear to miss Bassitt in this series, and Kikuchi was dealt to the Astros at the deadline. Instead, the Yanks are schedule to face Gausman, Juse Berrios and Internationl free agent signing Yariel Rodriguez.

Kevin Gausman opens the series for the Jays this evening. He's pitched three times against the Yanks already this season, so no need to go over his personal playing history again. Gausman has gotten slowly stronger as the season has gone along, and since the 2nd start against New York, he's pitched well in 4 starts: 3-1 with a 3.45 ERA. He's pitched 28 2/3 innings, he's allowed 21 hits, 11 runs (earned), 2 HR, 8 BB and struck out 26. His WHIP in the four starts is just over 1.00. On the season, Gausman is 9-8 in 21 starts with an ERA of 4.44. In 119 2/3 innings, he's allowed 118 hits, 66 runs, 58 earned, 16 HR, 33 BB with 117 K's. His WHIP on the season is just about league average at 1.262.
Gausman is making his 29th career start against the Yanks in his 35th career game against them. His career record against the Yanks is a story in 3 acts: 11-10 with a 3.57 ERA in a mix of great starts and terrible one while pitching for the O's. Since coming back to the AL with the Jays in 2022 and 2023, the Yanks had almost no chance against him: 3-1 with an ERA of 1.17 in 7 starts. This year, the Yanks hammered him twice; in betwen he had an effective 5-inning start against them in Toronto, 1 run in 5 innings for a no-decision in a 6-4 Yankees win. He was still recovering from his pre-season arm injury when they knocked him out in 1 1/3 innings at the Stadium in his 2nd start this year, the good game was 2 starts after that. The Yanks again beat him up in his last start against them at Rogers Centre at the end of June, getting 7 hits, 5 BB and 7 earned runs against him in 4 1/3 innings in an 8-1 Yankees win. He struck out 7, but gave up a Judge's 31st HR, a 2-run shot. His career totals vs. the Yankees: 34 games, 28 starts, 10-9 with a 3.51 ERA. In 169 innings, he's allowed 164 hits, 71 runs, 66 earned, 18 HR, 53 BB and struck out 169. His WHIP against them is 1.284, and the Yankees' team quadruple slash line against him is .252/.309/.382/.691.
Repertoire: We gave his repetoire three times already this year, but he's a 4-pitch righty, and his pitch mix so far is: 4-seamer averaging 94 about 54% of the time, splitter 86 about 33%, slider 83 about 8% and sinker 94 about 5% He's throwing a bit harder in the 4 recent solid games and is using the FB more: FB averaging 94.7 about 59% of the time, using the splitter a bit less, averaging 85.5 about 30% of the time, the sinker is about the same, averaging 94 about 6% of the time, and using the slider a bit less, averaging 82.8 about 5% of the time.
Playing the name game: Also done 3 times, but a quick review...the best pitcher named Kevin is ex-Yankee Kevin Brown; the best hitter is either Kevin McReynolds or Kevin Mitchell, both of who played outfield for the Mets at some point of their career, but Kevin Seitzer and Kevin Youkillis are right there, and the highest bWAR by a position player is more for his glove than his bat, still-active Keven Kiermaier, who the Jays just traded to the Dodgers for former Rays "opener" Ryan Yarbrough.

Marcus Stroman opens the series for the Yanks looking to go 6 innings for the first time in 6 starts, and also for his 1st win in the same stretch of games. In those 5 starts, he's 0-2 with an ERA of 5.64. In 22 1/3 innings, he's allowed 31 hits, 17 runs, 14 earned, 6 HR, 8 BB and struck out 16. On the season, he's 7-5 with a 3.64 ERA. In 21 starts, he's thrown 113 2/3 innings, allowing 106 hits, 53 runs, 46 earned, 18 HR, 48 BB and struck out 83. His WHIP on the season is a poor 1.372. His main problem remains the same; his stuff is diminished from his prime, so if he can't trick hitters into chasing, and they get him to come into the zone, they hit him. He's 6th in the AL in BB allowed, and among 38 quailified AL starters, his 3.8 BB per 9 innings rate is 2nd highest in the AL (behind only Luis Gil), his K rate of 6.6 is 3rd lowest, and his K/BB ratio of 1.73 is now the worst mark in the AL.
This is also Stroman's 4th start against the Jays this season, and he had just one against his former team for the Cubs in 2022. In the prior 4 starts, Stroman has 4 no-decision and an ERA of 2.61. In 20 2/3 innings, he's given up 17 hits, 6 runs (earned), 1 HR, 8 BB and struck out 12. His WHIP against the Jays is 1.210, and their team quadruple slash line against him is .218/.307/.308/.615. He pitched a solid game against them both at home and on the road in April, but in his start against them 5 weeks ago in Toronto, he pitched poorly, giving up 5 hits and 3 runs in 4 1/3 innings, walking 3, striking out 3, and the Yanks erupted late in that game to turn it into a 16-5 blowout.

Yesterday, the Yanks had the day off after winning their 5th straight for the first time since winning 7 in a row in early June. The win got them back to 20 over .500 for the first time since the 2nd game of the Reds series at the Stadium almost a month ago. With 52 games left, they're 65-45 on the season.
In other AL East action yesterday, the Rays, Red Sox and Jays also had the day off, but the Orioles opened a series in Cleveland against the Guardian, and new rotation member Trevor Rogers got hit pretty hard, giving 6 hits, 3 walks and a big 3-run HR to David Fry in the 3rd, 5 runs all told in 4 1/3 innings. The Guardians got 5 more in the 7th, and clobbered the O's 10-3.
Going into today's games, the Yanks are now in a flat-footed tie with the O's for first at 65-45. The Sox are still in 3rd, 6 1/2 back, the Rays are in 4th, 9 games back, and the Jays are fading in the distance, 14 1/2 out of 1st, which they acknowledged by trading off multiple veterans: Kikuchi, Turner, Kiermaier, Jansen and Ricards.

Elsewhere in the AL East today...The O's play the 2nd of 4 in Cleveland against the Guardians at 7:10 pm. Dean Kremer (4-7, 4.20 ERA) tries to make it two good starts in row for the O's; Carlos Carrasco (3-9, 3.68 ERA) tries to bounce back after back to back poundings in his last 2 starts for Cleveland. The Red Sox begin a series with the Texas Rangers at 8:05 pm in Arlington. Texas has lost 5 of 6, Boston has lost 8 of 12. Kutter Crawford (6-8, 3.60) tries to bounce back from his poor start against the Yanks for Boston; veteran Jose Urena starts for the Rangers. Urena is 3-5 with a 3.07 ERA in 6 starts (opens?) and 19 relief appearances, and after being gradually stretched out of his last few appearance, he should be capable of 75-80 pitches today. At 8:10 pm in Houston, the Rays start a 3-game series against the Astros. Shane Baz, pitchng for Tampa, is still winless in 4 starts since coming off the IL; he's 0-1 with a 3.66 ERA after a good 6-inning effort against the Reds last time. He'll face new Astros' acquistion Yusei Kikuchi (4-9, 4.75 ERA), looking to get things going after three straight very bad starts in which he gave up 16 earned runs in 14 1/3 innings.
And, at 7:07 pm at the Stadium, it's Gausman vs. Stroman. Pre-game exposition over, I'll see you in about two hours or so here in the game thread.

Have a great birthday dinner my friend. Wow, I haven't had French Onion Soup in a million years, but it sure sounds good. In the 70's, it seemed every restaurant had it on their menu. How true Matt. Any brass and fern yuppie restaurant worth it's salt had French Onion Soup on the menu in the 70s. Also Quiche Lorraine. Maybe Prime Rib or Guinea Hen stuffed with wild rice for a main course. Baked Alaska or Cherries Jubilee (anything on fire) for dessert. Some Grand Marnier for a digestif. And after that an outrageous bill of $45.
