What the heck is going on with Judge at DH, Grisham in CF, and Stanton OUT? I am no Stanton fan but the guy has to play to get in the groove.

I guess two straight games is Stanton limit, it's shame since I liked the way his at bats have looked.

Boone wants to be careful about playing Statnon every day, at least for a little while, plus Stanton is 2-14 against Berrios with 8 K, and Grisham is 1-5 against him with a 2 run HR.

The Jays send out veteran righty Jose Berrios to start the middle game against the Yanks this afternoon. If the Jays win, they take both this series and wrap up the season's series against the Yanks. Berrios has had more than a few bad games against the Yanks in his career, but when he faced them in Toronto five weeks ago, he pitched a terrific game against them. As I covered his professional history then, no need to do it now. As usual in such games, I'll go over what Berrios has done since then. In the first 4 starts he made after the game against the Yanks, he struggled, going 1-2 with an ERA of 7.78, He gave up 4 or 5 runs in three of those games, and the one game he gave up 3, he couldn't make it through 5 innings. He turned it around last start against the Rangers in Toronto, going 7 innings, allowing just 3 hits 1 BB and 1 run, while striking out 5 in a 7-3 Jays win.
On the season, Berrios is 9-8 in 22 starts with an ERA of 3.93. In 130 2/3 innings, he's allowed 117 hits, 57 runs, all earned, 22 HR, 39 BB and struck out 97. His WHIP on the season is somewhat better than average at 1.194. The 22 HR are tied for 2nd most in the AL, behind only his opponent tonight, Carlos Rodon, and his K/9 is an acceleration of a trend the last couple of seasons. Up until 3 years ago, his K/9 was 9 or better in 3 of 4 seasons from 2018 to 2021, but it's been below 9 the last 3 seasons. This seaasons 6.9 K's per is a career-low rate for him, and 4th lowest in the AL. His K/BB ratio is his worst since his rookie season.
Barrios is making his 14th career start vs. the Yanks; he also had a poor relief appeance against them in the Wild Card game in 2017, taking the loss, and a mediocre and short start against them in game 1 of the 2019 game against them, getting a no-decision. Just counting the regular season work, Berrios is 4-7 vs. the Yanks with a 4.96 ERA. In 74 1/3 innings, he's allowed 72 hits, 42 runs, 41 earned, 10 HR, walked 24 and struck out 88. His career WHIP against New York is a so-so 1.29, and the Yankees team quadruple slash line against him is .249/.394/.415/.734. In the start against the Yanks in late June, he made it through 7 innings, allowing just 2 hits, 2 runs (earned), 1 HR, 3 BB and K'd 8, getting the W in a 9-2 Jays' romp.
Repertoire: Berrios had added a pitch to his mix this year, a cutter that he throws maybe 4-5 times a game. To make room for the cutter plus a slightly increased use of his 4-seamer, he's using his sinker, slurve and change a bit less. He gets close to average movement on his pitches with 2 exceptions. The tail on his FB is better than average, but the drop on his sinker is considerably less than average. By run values, the sinker, change and slurve are small plusses, the cutter is a small minus, and the 4-seamer is a relatively big minus. While his HR/FB rate is high (as you might expect for the 2nd highest HR total in the league) his BABIP is well below league average, and his strand rate is well about league average. His ERA estimators show he's been pretty lucky overall, all 3 are between 4.55 and 5.25. His batted ball profile is fairly average in all other respects, the barrel rate is average, and the hard hit rate is high, 7th among 69 eligible MLB starters.
Playing the name game: We've been here before, Jose Cruz, current leader in bWAR for Joses, and Altuve and Ramirez will fight for the all-time lead, and Jose is the only Berrios in MLB history.

Carlos Rodon takes the mound for the Yanks this afternoon, looking to extend his modest turnaround of two excellent starts after six bad ones. He's in a 3-way tie for 4th in the AL in wins, but as mentioned above he leads the AL (and all of MLB) in HR allowed. On the season, in 22 starts, Rodon is 11-7 with a 4.34 ERA. He's pitched 120 1/3 innings, allowing 111 hits, 60 runs, 58 earned, 23 HR, and 36 BB with 129 K's. His WHIP on the season is slightly below MLB average at 1.222.
Including this season, Rodon has pitched poorly against the Jays. In 6 starts, he's 1-2 with an ERA of 5.01. In 32 1/3 innings, he's allowed 37 hits, 18 runs (earned), 4 HR, and 11 BB, striking out 38. His WHIP against Toronto is a lowly 1.485, and the Jays' team quadruple slash line against him is similar bad history: .287/.361/.434/.795. In two starts against them this year, he pitched a laborious 4 innings against the Jays in Toronto in April, allowing 5 hits and 3 runs while needing 101 pitches. In his 2nd start against them in Toronto in late June, they destroyed him for 7 hits, 2 HBP, and three-run HRs by George Springer in both the 1st and 2nd, and buried the Yanks in an 8-0 hole afer two innings they never remotely challenged, losing 9-2. He threw 41 pitches in the 1st and was at 65 pitches through 2, and got some consolation brownie points for talking Boone out of lifting him after he gave up back to back singles to open the Jays 5th, and retiring the next 3 batters to complete 5 innings at 107 pitches.

Yesterday, the Yanks watched Marcus Stroman go to the mound again with nearly nothing, and the Jays knocked him out the game having already allowed 5 runs on 8 hits and a BB with 2 outs in the 2nd and the bases loaded. Tonkin came in to give up a 2-run single to Serven, put the Yanks down 5, and though they rallied for 3 in the 5th, knocking out Jays' starter Gausman before he could qualify for the W, they never got any closer, losing 8-5. The loss ended the 5-game win streak and pushed them back down to 19 games over .500 at 65=46.
In other AL East action yesterday, the Guardians got two in the 2nd off of Dean Kremer, and two more in the 5th on a two-run double by Josh Naylor to take a 4-1 lead over the Orioles. They added 4 in the 6th off reliever Gregory Soto, newly acquired from the Phillies, and though Baltimore rallied for 3 in the 7th of Scott Barlow, the back end of their pen shut down the O's in the 8th and 9th for an 8-4 win. Carlos Carrasco gave up only one run, but lasted until just one out in the 5th, so the win went to reliever Cade Smith, who retired 5 in a row with 3 K's following Carrasco, his 6th win of the season against just 1 loss. Kremer took the loss to fall to 4-8. The loss was the O's 2nd straight after winning 4 out of 5; the Guardians have now won 5 straight. In Arlington, the Red Sox jumped on veteran right Jose Urena for a 2-run HR by Abreu in the 2nd, 4 more runs on 5 hits in the 4th, and finally knocked him out when Duran led off the 5th with a triple. The Rangers rallied a couple of times, and even cut the lead to 9-6 in the 6th. Kutter Crawford struggled through 5 1/3 innings, giving up 6 hits, 5 runs, including two HRs from Seager and one from Semien, but lasted long enough to get the win, improving to 7-8 on the season. Urena's loss dropped his record to 3-6. The win was the Sox' 2nd in a row after losing 8 of 11; the Rangers have now lost 6 of 7. In Houston, the Rays started the game with a single from Yandy Diaz, who was not traded to the Yanks or anyone else, then got a 2 run HR from Dylan Carlson, who they just acquired from the Cards for Shawn Armstrong, But that was all they got off starter Yusei Kikuchi, who struck out 11 in 5 2/3 innings and four relievers. The Astros got 2 in the 4th and took the lead in the 7th on an RBI single by Yanier Diaz. Bryan Abreu got his 2nd win with a scorless 1-2-3 inning, striking out 2, and Josh Hader closed it out in the 9th with his 22nd save.
Going into today's games, the Yanks and Orioles are still tied for first, 65-46. The Sox improved to 5 1/2 games back in 3rd. The Rays are in 4th, 8 games back. Despite their win, the Jays remain iu the cellar,
Elsewhere in the AL East today...the Red Sox play the middle game of their series against the Rangers in Arlington at 7:05 pm. Cody Bradford (3-0, 3.38 ERA) makes just his 4th start this season for Texas; Tanner Houck (8-7, 2.79 ERA) goes for Boston, trying to avoid his 3rd poor start in a row. At 7:15 pm in Cleveland, the O's play the middle game of their series against the Guardians. Zack Eflin 6-7, 4.11 ERA) makes his 2nd start for Baltimore; rookie Joey Cantillo makes his 2nd major league start for Cleveland. Also at 7:15 pm, the Rays play the middle game of their series vs. the Astros. Zack Littell (4-7, 4.18) hopes to make it two good starts in a row for Tamps after 7 shutout innings in a win over the Reds. Low-hit specialist Ronel Blanco (9-5, 2.95) goes for Houston; he leads all off MLB with the lowest hits per 9 innings at 5.5.
And, this afternoon at 1:07 at the Stadium, it's Berrios vs. Rodon.

Loperfido fouls off a first pitch FB, waist high, outside corner. Slider on the corner away, hitt o pretty deep center, Grisham thinks it's right at him, then has to go back quickly to haul it in with a stretch on the backhand behind him for the 2nd out.
