This can include players you’ve experienced in your own lifetime. But, what All Time Classic Yankee Great is your favorite and why?
Mine is Joe DiMaggio because he was part of my all time favorite Yankees team (the 1936 team) and he was an incredible player and he married Marilyn Monroe.

I don't go back that far so I have to give the basic answer, Derek Jeter. A lot can be said about The Captain but I will say it was amazing to me in the playoffs how he was always in the middle of the important rallies, getting on base and slapping hits to right field. I have a Jeter autographed baseball that my ex girlfriend gave me that I keep on my desk as well. The gf didn't last but the Jeter memories did.

My all-time favorite was Bobby Murcer. Many others had better numbers and many are in the HoF, but Bobby was special for so many reasons!

1. Thurman Munson 2. Don Mattingly 3. Derek Jeter
In that order. I doubt it will ever change.

Mantle was at the end of his career when I saw him, but he's the reason I became a Yankee fan. Mel Stottlemyre might be my classic favorite. Maybe the only thing those late 60's teams had.

Don Mattingly
I grew up with those 8o's Yankees that were never quite good enough, but Donnie was always the gold standard.

As a kid my favorite Yankee was Bobby Richardson. In later years Mattingly became, and still is, my all-time favorite Yankee. He was kind enough to autograph a ball for my granddaughter on his last visit to Coors Field as Marlins Manager.

Not in my lifetime...hmmmm...think I'd have to go with The Iron Horse, Lou Gehrig. Read Jonathan Eig's fantastic bio on Lou when it was released back in 2006 and he seems like he was just as great a human being as a ballplayer. My fandom dates back to circa 1985, so predating that...
1) Lou Gehrig 2) Mickey Mantle 3) Thurman Munson
My all-time favorite is Mattingly (obviously).

I guess if I were to consider JUST my lifetime of being a fan, then my Top 5 in order would be:
1. Derek Jeter 2. Hideki Matsui 3. Jorge Posada 4. Mike Mussina 5. Alex Rodriguez (controversial I know, but he is essential in giving us 2009 and I have an authentic adult home on-field jersey of his with no name on the back that is from the years 2004-2006)
As of players playing right now, it’s Aaron Judge of course.

Mantle / Mattingly in my life time. I mark(ed) my golf balls with four blackened dots over three blackened dots, which adds up to seven. The four is for Gehrig, the three for Ruth, and them together the seven is for Mantle.
I’m not about to start marking 99 dots… 😂

For players I've actually seen, Mantle and Ford were set in concrete as 1 and 1A back in the 50s. Despite a prejudice favoring players from my youth, I still would put Jeter and Mo right up there. Had I been born around 2010 I have no doubt that Aaron Judge would be my favorite for life, and for that matter he seems more other-worldly than any Yankee since Mantle.
I enjoy seeing some of the less-commonly-mentioned favorites named here -- Richardson, Stottlemyre, Murcer, Posada, Matsui. All high on my list, which is admittedly very long.
Gehrig is an easy pick for most courageous and inspirational. He transcends team loyalty. I sometimes think The Babe almost gets overlooked because he is quasi-mythical. But he will always be the most important person in Yankee history. If Harry Frazee had been a better investor, the Yankee Dynasty wouldn't be anything close to what it became.

I previously mentioned that Murcer is my all-time favorite Yankee, but since so many have submitted lists, I humbly submit my top 10.
1. Murcer 2-10 in alphabetical order Gehrig (no, I did not see him play), Guidry, Judge, Mantle (I did not see him play either), Mattingly, Munson, Nettles, O'Neill, Rivera

Thurman Munson. I got his autograph at a signing in the mid 70's. I think it was Cowen's hardware in either Bergenfield or Dumont. Could be completely wrong but that is what I think it was. I was 15 when he died and cried all night.
