Weather report doesn't look good? Light intermittent rain throughout the day. Might get it in, but it won't be pretty.

The Angels come into the Stadium to wrap up their season's series against the Yanks with a 3-game set. The Yanks took 2 of 3 from the Angels in the Anaheim House of Horrors™ back in late May, just one part of that very succeessful West Coast trip at that time when they won all 3 series against the Padres, Angels and Giants, winning 7 of 9. The Angels come into this series having just taken 2 of 3 from a pretty hot Mets team, part of a fair stretch of solid ball in which they've won 8 of 14, despite losing Mike Trout for the season with a torn meniscus, and losing Luis Regnifo and Anthony Rendon to the IL as well. (Rendon was just activated for today's games.) They're now 49-63 on the season, 4th place in the West, and closer to last than to 3rd. They'd be out of the race for the division title in any other division, but in the NL West, they're just 9 1/2 games back of the 1st place Mariners. They were 21-35 at the end of the first series against the Yanks, and are dead even .500, 28-28, since them.

The Angels will start inexperienced righty Davis Daniel in the first game of the doubleheader. He was drafted in the Rule 4 Draft no less than 3 times: by the Cubs in the 34th round in 2016, by the Brewers in the 11th round in 2018, and finally, by the Angels in the 7th round in 2019. He pitched for Auburn for part of three seasons, but early in his junior year there, tore his UCL and had to have Tommy John surgery in April. He didn't pitch again in 2019, and maybe did some work in developmental camp in 2020, rehabbing from the surgery, because there was no minor league season that year due to COVID. The Angels had him open 2021 at high-A ball and he pitched very well in 9 starts. They moved him to AA, and again, he pitched well in 9 starts. They brought him to AAA in early September, and he got hammered in 5 games, 4 of which were starts. He opened 2022 back in AAA and pitched well enough in 9 starts (3-1, 3.64 ERA) to get a callup in mid-June, but the Angels sent him back down 5 days later without using him. After getting hit hard in two starts later that month, there's a month-long gap in his pitching log for 2022. I'm assuming he suffered some sort of injury and was put on the AAA IL, but I can't find what injury it was in any of the usual places. He was put back into the rotation in late July, and after getting hit in his first 3 starts down the track, he pitched superbly in his final 7 starts: 3-2 with a 1.99 ERA. He had the inside track on a rotation job going into 2023, but in February, he was put on the 60-day IL with a shoulder strain.
Daniel didn't pitch again until August. The Angels moved him cautiously up the ladder, 2 brief starts in rookie ball, 4 at A-ball, up to the majors for one long relief appearance, back down to AAA for 1 short start, and finally, back to the Angels for two more long relief appearances. He pitched just 41 2/3 innings total, and just 12 1/3 with the Angels, but still lost his rookie status because he spent too much time on the major league IL. Anaheim had him open the season in AAA, and even though he pitched poorly in 14 starts there (poorly being a relative term, because Salt Lake is a big hitters' park in a big hitters' league; still, he was 5-4 with a 5.33 ERA), the Angels called him to fill a spot in their rotation. He was brilliant in his 1st start, 8 shutout innings allowing just 4 hits and striking out 8, getting the W in a 5-0 win over the Tigers. The next start when badly, giving up 5 runs to the A's in 5 1/3 innings in a loss. The 3rd start was a disaster; 7 runs in 3 2/3 innings against the Rangers. So the Angels sent him back to AAA, where he made two starts, the first one bad and the second one superb, and they called him back up 7 days ago to face the Rockies in Anaheim. He threw 5 innings, gave up 1 run, 5 hits, 1 BB and struck out 5, getting a no-decision in a 2-1 loss to Colorado. And here we are. Season totals to date: 4 starts, 1-2, ERA 4.91. In 22 innings, he's allowed 24 hits, 13 runs, 12 earned, 3 HR, just 2 BB, with 19 K's. His WHIP is a respectable 1.182. Obviously, this is his first game against the Yankees.
Repertoire: Daniel is a soft-tossing (junkballing?) 4-pitch righty. From what little video I've seen, his release point is high, close to but not quite over the top. It's a very small sample, but Daniel's pitch mix through 4 starts is: 4-seamer averaging 91-2 about 47%, slider 82 about 25%, change 84-5 about 20% , and curve 75 about 8%. So he does have a fairly large separation between the FB and his offspeed stuff, but without elite velocity. His FB gets more or less average rise and run, the slider acts more like a sweeper, getting less drop than average and much more break glove-side than average. The change gets below average drop and tail, and the curve gets slightly better than average drop and break. By run values to this point: the FB is a plus, the Curve a big plus, the slider a big minus, and the change is just about average. His FB velocity and spin are well below average, but he does get excellent extension, primarily due to the high release point. On batted balls, the line drive rate is slightly high, and so is the flyball rate, the ground ball rate is a bit low, and the popup rate is pretty high, about 14%. Effects of hitters swinging under the 92 FB that he uses so much because of the near-elite extension? Maybe. His barrel and hard hit rates are near average. The luck factors have huge error bars in such a small number of innings, but his BABIP is very high, the strand rate is very low and the HR/FB rate is average. His ERA estimators think his ERA should be about a run lower, but in 19 innings, that's likely to be mostly random chance. Regarding his apparent ability, Nick Pollack at Pitcher List had this to say about Daniel's best start, the first one against the Tigers:
"Sure, sure, sure Blame it on the Tigers all you want, but Davis Daniel just had himself a GAME: 8.0 IP, 0 ER, 4 Hits, 0 BBs, 8 Ks – 13 Whiffs, 35% CSW, 99 pitches. Daaaang Daniel, with the Gold Star!..."
(Pollack awards the 'Gold Star' each night to "the bad pitcher who did shockingly well")
"If you’re unfamiliar with Daniel, he’s a four-seamer/change/slider guy with a rare hook, who sat just 91.7 mph in this one. Ah, so great four-seamer shape, right? Not really… 13 iVB, 1.2 HAVAA, with nearly seven feet of extension (that’s the best one). The pitch led the way with a 45% CSW, though, on the back of the Tigers allowing a 38% called strike rate on heaters, with Daniel shoving the pitch into the zone without detriment.
I kinda like Daniel’s changeup and slider as he kept them mostly on opposite sides of the plate, but they aren’t special pitches that suggest he’s elevating the pedestrian heater to legitimate levels. Watching this one felt a bit strange and I’m still a bit shocked he produced such a good line without an electric arsenal or elite command. This was a control-first game where the Tigers simply didn’t do enough. Wait, so actually Blame it on the Tigers. "
Doesn't mean he won't pitch a good one today, even so.

Playing the name game: Over 100 players with last name Davis, some excellent hitters, turn of the 19th-20th century Hall of Fame shortstop George Davis, outfielderes Eric, Tommy, Chili, Willie (sorry, couldn't help that one), 1st baseman Alvin, George and Glenn, pitchers, Storm, Mark and ex-Yankee Ron Davis, and the greatest of them all, J.D. Davis. Ack! Who hijacked my Name Game?? You're fired!! (P.S. The O's just signed J.D. to a minor league deal, I'm sure he won't come back to haunt the Yanks like Steven Pearce, who hit well for every other AL East team, especially against the Yankees, but not when he played FOR the Yankees, nosiree, Bob!)
Ahem...But the first name Davis is a very recent phonomenon. There are 4 in MLB history, all started their major league careers in 2022 or after. Of these, Davis Schneider of the Jays is the only one with even 1.0 bWAR or better, at 2.2 total bWAR. Scores of players with first name Daniel. The best hitter is probably Daniel "Rusty" Staub, the near Hall of Fame outfielder/firstbaseman/mostly DH of the 60's, 70's and 80's, and the best pitcher is probably Dan Haren, who I talked about the last time the Yanks faced a starter named Dan.
One odd note, just for funsies...if you enter Daniel's name backwards, as in a school attendance list, you get Daniel, Davis, which has nothing to do with baseball, but is the name of a charater actor you'll remember for:
1) The holodeck character Professor Moriarty on Star Trek: the Next Generarion and a cameo in Star Trek: Picard, and... 2) An obscure but noticeable role in the movie version of The Hunt for Red October. Everyone remembers the late Fred Thomson as Admiral Painter, the man in charge of the task force tracking the Soviet Fleet as it searches for its stolen submarine (This business will get out of control!. It will get out of control and we'll be lucky to live through it!!), but Davis is Captain Davenport, the extrmely dismissive commander of the flagship, the carrier U.S.S. Enterprise, who calls Alex Baldwin's Jack Ryan "certifiable" for claiming Captain Ramius is not taking his submarine to the U.S. to start World War III, but is in fact attempting to defect to the West and give the U.S. the boat instead, and... 3) His most famous role is Niles, the snarky butler on Fran Drescher's sit-com, The Nanny. (Oh, THAT guy. Yeah, that guy. He isn't British by the way. Born in Arkansas, his original accent was very Southern, but he's worked hard to achieve a standard American English accent for acting purposes, which he uses for interviews, acting roles that don't call for a British accent and such.)

Luis Gil starts for the Yanks in the opener. In his last 4 starts, thanks to his revamped slider, he's recovered a lot of the ground he lost after his hot streak crashed. He's now using the slider a lot more than his change. He's 2-1 in those 4 starts with an ERA of 2.35, with 30 K and just 5 BB in 23 innings. On the season, Gil is now 11-5 with an ERA of 3.20. In 21 starts, he's pitched 112 2/3 innings, allowing 71 hits, 41 runs, 40 earned, 10 HR, 53 BB and struck out 132. Despite leading the league in walks, as well as BB per 9 innings, his WHIP is a rather low 1.101 because of his now league-leading lowest hits per 9 innings rate. He's also 10th in strikeout, 4th in K's per 9 innings, and 7th lowest in HR allowed per 9 innings, and he's climbed back up to 10th in the AL in pitcher bWAR at 2.9. In his most recent start against the Phils, they got 3 runs off him in 5 1/3, and he walked, but got the Yanks safely into the 6th, and the offense roasted Philly ace Zack Wheeler for a 14-4 blowout.
His only other appearance against the Angels came in the longest start of his career to date: getting hits 7th win in a row by pitching 8 innings of 2-hit ball, walking 1 and striking out 9 in late May in Anaheim. The only blemish in the 2-1 nail-biter was a solo HR by catcher Logan O'Hoppe in the 7th. For that one game his ERA against the Angels is 1.13, the WHIP is 0.375, and the Angel team quadruple slash line against Gil in 28 PA is .077/.143/.192/.335. For what that's worth.

Yesterday, the Yanks were rained out. They come into today's game at 21 games over at 67-46, and moved back into first by themselves for the first time in 6 weeks.
In other AL East action yesterday, the O's and Jays played the first game of their 3-game series in Baltimore. It was scoreless for 5 innings, and the O's broke through first in the top of the 6th when uberrookie Jackson Holliday hit his 3rd HR in 6 games since being recalled, but the Jays immediately struck back with a 5-run rally that started after two were already out in the bottom of the inning. Alejandro Kirk gave the Jays a 3-1 lead with his 3rd HR of the season, and Addison Barger closed the rally out with a 2-run double. The O's got one back in the 8th on a bases loaded walk by Austin Slater, but Genesis Cabrera struck out the next two batters to get out of the inning, and ex-Yankee Chad Green locked down the 5-2 win for his 9th save. Chris Bassett got the win with seven strong innings to get to 9-10, and Gregory Soto took the loss in relief to drop to 1-4 on the season. The Rays and Cards played the first game of their series in St.Louis, and Brandon Lowe got the Rays off to a good start with a 2-run HR two batters into the game. The Cards struck back for a pair of 2-run HRs of their own from rookie speedster Victor Scott and recent trade pickup Tommy Pham to take a 4-2 lead after 2. The score stayed that way until the 9th when the Rays rallied off Cards closer Ryan Helsley for a walk, a single and a two out RBI single by Johnny DeLuca, but Helsey steadied and got Taylor Walls to ground back to him for the final out, and the Cards hung on to win 4-3. Ex-Yankee Sonny Gray got the W to get to 11-6 on the season with 7 strong innings of 4-hit, 2-run ball with 6 K's, and Jeffrey Springer took his first loss in almost 2 years, allowing 4 runs in 5 innings to drop to 0-1. Helsley's save was his league-leading 35th of the season. In Kansas City, the Red Sox took an early 3-1 lead in the middle game of their 3-game series with the Royals, then the Royals tied it up in the 5th on a solo HR by Massey and a RBI double by Pasquantino, but the Sox immediately struck back for 3 in the 6th on a run-scoring wild pitch and a 2-run single by Yoshida to re-take a 6-3 lead. The Royals rallied for two in the 8th on a 2-run double by M.J. Melendez, but Kenley Jansen struck out Maikel Garcia with the tying run at 3rd and 2 down, then threw a 1-2-3 9th, striking out 2 including MVP Candidate Bobby Witt, Jr. as the final out, locking down his 21st save in a 6-5 Sox win. Brendan Bernardino got a cheap win by getting the last man in the Royals 5th, and is now 4-3 on the season. Seth Lugo took the loss to drop to 13-6 on the season. The loss was the Royals 3rd in 4 games after winning 5 in a row; the win was the Sox' 3rd in a row and game them the series win as well.
Going into today's games, the Yanks are all alone in first by 1/2 game over the O's, but the Sox gained 1/2 game on the Yanks to get to 5 1/2 back in 3rd. The Rays loss caused them to drop back to 9 1/2 back in 4th, while the Jays win moved them 1/2 game closer, now 15 games out of 1st.

Elsewhere in the AL East today...the O's play the middle game of their series at Rogers Center at 7:07 pm. Trevor Rogers (2-10, 4.76 ERA) hopes to improve on his bad 1st start for the O's since being traded by the MAAArlins; Bowden Francis (4-3, 5.64 ERA), who gave up the game-winning single to D.J. LeMahieu in Sunday's 10-inning Yankees win at the Stadium, makes just his 2nd start since April 7th for the Jays. At 7:45 pm in Busch Stadium, the Rays and Cards play the middle game of their series; it's a battle of pitchers having great seasons who got hit in their last starts. Taj Bradley (9-6, 2.71 ERA) starts for the Rays; he had his insane white-hot streak of starts stopped at 9 by the post-dump MAAArlins of all teams. Eric Fedde (7-5, 3.34 ERA) will pitch for St. Louis; he committed the terrible sin of getting hammered by the hated rival Cubs in his first start after getting traded over from the White Sox. At 8:10 pm at Kaufman Stadium, the Red Sox and Royals play the middle game of their series. Kutter Crawford (7-8, 3.81 ERA) will be trying to complete the seep and to get himself back on track aftere getting hit hard his last 3 starts after throwing back-to-back games of 7 shutout innings. Lefty Cole Ragans (8-7, 3.36 ERA) threw 7 shutout innings against the Sox in Fenway 4 starts back, he'll try to repeat that tonight to try stave off the Royals getting swept.
And, this afternoon at 4:07 pm at the Stadium, it's Daniel vs. Gil, two pitchers whose names still work if you reverse the order of the first and last names.
