The Angels save their best for last; current ace and lefty Tyler Anderson starts the finale for the Angels, looking to... Anderson pitched against the Yanks in Anaheimin the series in May, taking a tough loss in the game I meantioned Monday where Luis Gil went 8 innings for the first and only time of his career. So no need to rehash Anderson's career here. Since that game Anderson has pitched somewhat worse, but it still pitching well: 3-5 in 11 starts and a 3.66 ERA. For the season as a whole, Anderson is 8-10 with an ERA of 3.05. In 22 starts, he's pitched 135 2/3 innings, allowing 108 hits, 47 runs, 46 earned, 16 HR, 51 BB and struck out 102. He has a low H/9 innings, 7.17, 6th in the AL, but a high BB rate, 3.4 per 9 (and he's 2nd in the AL in walks allowed with 51), so his WHIP for the season is a good, but not great, 1.172. He's 8th in the AL in ERA, 4th in bWAR for pitchers, and 7th in innings pitched.
Tonight is Anderson's 3rd career start vs. the Yankees. In the other two, he's 0-1 with a 2.70 ERA. In 10 innings, he's allowed 9 hits, 3 runs (earned), 1 HR, and 8 BB with 8 K's. His WHIP against the Yanks is a fat 1.700, and the team quadruple slash line against him is .250/.378/.389/.767. In that start in May, he went 5 innings, giving up 4 hits and 6 BB, but a solo HR to Verdugo in the 4th was the only run he gave up. It was another Yankee RISP multifail game; they went 1-8 overall with 11 LOB for the game, and 1-5 with 6 LOB against Anderson in his 5 innings. He was helped out by not one but two interference calls on Yankee baserunners, the notorious call on Soto when he lunged to get back to the bag and bumped Neto trying to field a popup near 2nd base for a double play, and Rizzo being struck by a DJ Lemahieu's grounder to the left side in the 2nd (although that might have been a DP ball had it not hit Rizzo). Anderson was saddled with the tough loss after Hunter Strickland gave the Yanks their 2nd run in the 7th on a Little League HR when Volpe tripled and the relay to 3rd got away, letting him score on an error. O'Hoppe's solo HR in the bottom of the inning made it 2-1, but failed to get Anderson of the hook, and Gil and Holmes made it stand up with 9 innings of 3 hit ball, although Holmes put forth his customary Relaxation Moment in the 9th by giving up a leadoff single, a wild pitch and a walk, before getting a DP grounder from Calhoun and a grounder to 3rd to end it.
Repertoire: Anderson is a 5-pitch lefty, but relies very heavily on three of them: 4-seamer averaging 89-90 that he throws about 40% of the time, his killer change 79 about 37%, cutter 84 about 19%. He also has a inker averaging 88-89 that he uses about 3-4 times a game, and a slider 77 he throws rarely, about once every 3 games. In the game against the Yanks in Anaheim, he used the 4-seamer a lot less, the cutter and sinker more. The 4-seamer has better rise than average but less run; the change has less drop than average and an average amount of tail; The cutter has much more drop than average, 8th most drop in MLB among 157 pitchers using the cutter, and below average glove siide break. The sinker has below average drop and well above average tail. With only 7 sliders used for the whole season, it's too small a sample to judge the break, or the run value. In teerms of run values, the change is the key pitch here, at +15 runs, it has one of the highest positive run values of any pitch in MLB. The cutter is a small plus, the 4-seamer is a small minus, and the sinker is a big minus per 100 thrown, but he throws so few it hasn't hurt him much. His barrel % is about average, but the killer change gets a low of weak contact, and his hard hit rate is well below average; 5th lowest among 67 qualified big league starters this year. His line drive, ground ball and flyball rates are near average, the popup rate slightly above. His swining strike rate is slightly above average, the called strike rate slightly below and his CSW is near average. His HR/FB rate is well below average (10th best of the 67 starters), but his BABIP is elite (4th best), and his strand rate is also elite (3rd best). Because all 3 "luck factors" are working heavily in his favor, it's no surprise that his ERA esitimators think his ERA should be about 1 1/3 runs higher than his actual ERA this season.

Playing the name game: Yanks have faced Anderson before, so recapping it briefly, more than 50 Tylers in MLB history, the best is Tyler Glasnow on the pitching side. On the hitting side, I dunno...Tyler O'Neill? Ty France? Maybe Tyler Stepheson stays healthy enough to get there. As for Andersons, less than 70 MLB Andersons, Yankee-killer Garrett Anderson and Brady Anderson are the best hitters. Of the pitchers, aside from Tyler, either lefty Brian Anderson, who won 82 games in a 13-year career and pitched well but lost game 3 of the World Series to the Yanks in 2001, or lefty Brett Anderson, who won 67 games in 12 seasons for 6 teams, is probably the best. The most famous Anderson in MLB history is still Hall of Fame manager Sparky Anderson, one of just three major league managers to win a World Series mananging team in both leagues (Tony LaRussa and Bruce Bochy are the other two).

Nestor Cortes goes in the middle game for the Yanks. Cortes got off to an excellent start this year, though the end of May, he was 3-4 with 12 starts and a 3.30 ERA. He's struggled in 11 starts since June 1st, going 2-5 with a 5.22 ERA. He hadn't won a road start until his last start against the Phillies. The Yanks gave him 4 runs early, and though Nestor gave up 2 in the 4th and a solo HR in the 5th, he got through 5 1/3 innings, giving up 3 runs. 3 hits, 2 BB, 1 HR with 6 K's, and got the win against a very good, but struggling Phillles team. Now he has to reestablish his earlier dominance at home. He had been pitching very well at the Stadium until the Red Sox got to him for 9 hits and 4 earned runs in 4 2/3 in 9-7 loss the start before the one in Philly. On the season, Nestor is 4-9 in 23 starts (the Yanks are 8-15 in games started by Nestor, 59-31 in all other games.) with an ERA of 4.16 ERA. in 129 2/3 innings, he's allowed 127 hits, 61 runs, 60 earned, 20 HR, 28 BB and struck out 122. His WHIP for the season is still decent: 1.195.
He has been a bit of a victim of poor run support, the Yanks have scored 3.8 runs per start for him, 5.5 per start for all other Yankees starters), and he also has 4 of the 8 wins the pen has blown this year, all other Yankees starters have 0, 1, or 2. I'm not saying Nestor has been great this season, but he has been somewhat unlucky. His record should likely be more like 7-7 rather than 5-9. In which case, he'd just be an ordinary 4-5 starter and not someone people are thinking of taking out of the rotation. In fact, he's been worth 1.4 bWAR and 1.9 fWAR, and you can do worse than that for a back of the rotation starter. Now, if he keeps pitching as poorly as he has for the last two months, then yes, you take him out of the rotation, especially in the post-season
This will be Cortes' 8th game and 4th career start against the Angels, and he's pitched pretty well against them. He's 2-0 with a 3.24 ERA, and in 25 innings, he's allowed 20 hits, 9 runs (earned), just 5 walks and 25 K, but with 4 HR allowed. His WHIP against them is an excellent 1.00, and the Angels team quadruple slash line against him is .220/.273/.385/.657. His last game against them was during the series in Anaheim in late May, and was typical of his first 12 starts: 5 1/3 innings, 5 hits, 2 runs, 1 HR, 0 BB and 4 K. He left with a 3-2 lead, and the Yanks brought in Jeff Weaver, who cruised through two 1-2-3 innings, but ran into trouble when Boone tried to have him finish off the 8th as well, giving up two hits around a lineout and a K, and when Holmes came in to get the last 4 outs, he gave up an immediate 2 run double to Taylor Ward, his 3rd blown save, and the Yanks got their only loss in the series, 4-3.

Yesterday, the Yanks played a double-header against the Angels...The Yanks took the opener, 5-2, as Luis Gil battled his way through 5 shutout innings, walking 5, but giving up just 2 hits and striking out 6, and getting his 12th win to go with 5 losses. Oswaldo Cabrera hit a solo HR, his 7th of the season, Alex Verdugo hit 2 doubles and scored 2 runs. Aaron Judge had two hits, two walks, scored a run and knocked in another, and Clay Holmes pitched a stress-free 1-2-3 ninth for his 24th save. In the nightcap, rookie Will Warren was called up to start his 2nd major league game and had no command, the Angels hitting balls hard everywhere, piling up 8 hits and 3 walks in 4 1/3 innings, knocking him out with 6 runs given up. They put up 6 of them in the 2nd, the crushing blow being Zack Neto's grandslam with 2 outs and 2 strikes, and Warren one good pitch from getting out of the inning with a whole skin. The Yanks had multiple men on base in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th off of Carson Fulmer, and even though they made him throw 90 pitches, couldn't do better than 2 runs in his four innings. The Angels pen retired the last 10 Yankees in a row. Hunter Strickland got the win for the Angels with a scoreless 5th and 6th; Warren took the his first loss in the majors, and is 0-1. If Clarke Schmidt is healthy soon, that may be the last we see of Warren for a while.
In other AL East action yesterday...at the Rogers Centre, the Orioles evened their series with the Jays, by coming from behind with 2 in the 7th on Jackson Holliday's 2-run HR (his 4th HR in 7 games since being recalled), then 3 more in the 8th on a solo shot by Anthony Santander, his 2nd of the game (he's 2nd to Judge in the AL with 34 HR this year, 27 of them in his last 66 games) and a 2 run double by new acquistion Eloy Jimenez, and cruised to a 7-3 win. Burch Smith pitched a scoreless 6th and got his 3rd win of the season, as the O's pen combined for 4 innings of shutout ball in relief of Trevor Rogers, making his 2nd start for Baltimore. Ryan Burr gave up the Holliday HR and took the loss, his first decision on the year. At Busch Stadium, Nolan Arenado's 2-run double in the 3rd broke a 1-1 tie and Alec Burleson added his own 2-run double in the 4th, and the Cards had all the runs they need in a 5-2 win over the Rays, giving the Cards the series win. New trade acquisition Eric Fedde bounced back from a terrible start in his first game for St. Louis by throwing 5 innings of 1 run ball, allowing 4 hits, 2 BB and striking out 6 for his 8th win on the season. Ryan Helsey allowed the tying run to come to the plate in the 9th by giving up a single and a walk with one out, but struck out Brandon Lowe and Rays trade pickup Christopher Morel to end it, recording his league-leading 36th save. Taj Bradley was hit hard for the 2nd straight game after a white-hot run of 9 great starts, giving up 5 runs on 9 hits and 3 BB in 4 2/3 inning, taking the loss to drop to 6-6 on the year. The Red Sox got a 3-run HR from Romy Gonzalez to take a 3-2 lead in the 3rd, and Danny Jansen added a solo shot in the 4th to make it 4-2, but the Royals then erupted for a 5-run rally in the bottom of the inning with the key blows being a 2 run double by Bobby Witt, Jr. and a 2-run HR by M.J. Melendez, and added another in the 6th in Witt's 2nd solo HR of the game, and the Royals avoided getting swept by Boston, 8-4. Kutter Crawford got hit hard for the 3rd straight game, giving up 5 hits, 4 walks, 2 HR and 6 runs in 3 2/3, taking the loss and dropping to 7-9 on the season. Cole Ragans gave up the Gonzalez HR with 2 outs in the 3rd, but the 3 runs were enearned because Cedanne Rafela had reached on an error before the HR. Ragans gave up 6 hits, 1 earned run, walked 1 and struck out 7 in 6 1/3 to raise his record to 9-7 on the season. Witt's 3 hits raised him BAVG back to .347, and it's pretty obviously Witt and Judge battling for the MVP Award as of now. In fact, Witt's 10 total bases last night moved him 1 ahead of Judge for the major league lead. Both of them are now close to being on pace for 400 total bases. (Judge 394, Witt 392).
Going into today's games, the Yanks and Orioles are still tied for first, 68-47. The Sox are 6 games back in 3rd. The Rays are in 4th, 10 games back. The Jays are still in the basement, 15 1/2 out of 1st.

Elsewhere in the AL East today...the O's play the final game of their series at Rogers Center at 7:07 pm. Dean Kremer (4-8, 4.39 ERA) starts for the O's, looking for his first win in 6 starts. He's 0-4 with a 5.40 ERA in his last 5, and just one quality start in those 5 games. Kevin Gausman (9-8, 4.56 ERA) goes for the Jays. Toronto won his last start, but not Gausman, he was pulled one out away from making it through 5 innigns against the Yanks last Friday. The move worked, as the Jays' much-criticized pen held the Yanks at bay the rest of the way for their only win of the series. The Rays and Cards wrap up their 3-game series at Busch Stadium at 7:15 pm. Shane Baz (0-1, 3.60 ERA) goes to the hill for the Rays, still looking for his first win since spending nearly two years on the IL with various elbow problems that culminated in Tommy John surgery; he's pitched solidly his last two starts with no W's to show for it. Veteran Kyle Gibson (7-4, 4.04 ERA) starts for St. Louis. Gibson has struggled in his last 7 starts, with an 5.40 ERA and a WHIP of nearly 1.600. The Red Sox have the day off before hosting a 3-game series against the Astros at Fenway.
And, this evening at 7:07 pm at the Stadium, it's Anderson vs. Cortes, a potentially bad matchup for the Yanks.

Schanuel steps in. Game underway. FB at the knees outer 3rd, not called. Bad call, at least 40% on Gameday, 1-0 FB yanked low, 2-0 FB waist high, outer 3rd, fouled, 2-1 FB above middle middle clocked to deep to right center, goes into the low seats in front of the real bleachers for a solo HR, 1-0 Angels.

FB at the top, Neto swings under it, 0-1 Slider misses up and away, 1-1 Cutter misses inside, but Neto started, couldn't check in time, 1-2 Change misses well low and outside, 2-2 FB misses inside by an inch or two above the knees, Nestor gets a break, called strike 3. 0% on Gameday. 1 down.

Slider on the outer 3rd, taken for a strike, 0-1 FB well high, inner 3rd, 1-1 FB well high, outer half, 2-1 Cutter well high and a bit inside, O'Hoppe leans away, 3-1 Cutter near middle, lined hard but right to Chisholm, who has to reach up to grab it, 2 down. Nestor lucky on that one, that's a double if not at Chisholm.

Pillar swings through a FB just below middle middle. FB outside corner waist high, fouled off, 0-2 FB misses inside, Pillar lays off, 1-2 Change drifts outside by 4-5 inches near the top, 2-2 FB outer 3rd, below the waist, fouled. Cutter 6 inches high, inner 3rd, chases and fouls it back to the YES booth. Change waist high, 3-4 inches outside, chased and fouled again. Drops sidearm, hits the low outside corner with a FB, spoiled 9th pitch of the at bat coming. Cutter 3 inches high, pulled hard and foul. 8 pitches since he got ahead 0-2. FB at the very top, outer half, Pillar misses just under, high fly to center, Judge hesitates a moment then finds it in the mist, catches, inning over.
Bottom 1, 1-0 Angels. Not what the Yanks need here, 24 pitches in the 1st for Nestor.
