Shuster still in there. Volpe takes a slider on the outer 3rd, 0-1 Takes a change way low, 1-1 Takes a 94 FB on the low inside corner, 1-2 Takes his timeout Steps in the bucket again, has to lunge on the change to the low outside corner, rolls it over to short, Baldwin fields, throws him out, 1 down.

Verdugo takes a FB above the knees in the middle at 95, 0-1 Takes a slider outside and low, 1-1 FB waist high, inner 3rd, lined over 2nd into right for a 1-out single. Soto up with a chance to tie the record for HRs in a game.

It really is. Leiter bleeds baserunners. That's 16 in 7.1 innings of work. Not gonna hack it. Give the Dodgers credit, they bought really low on Michael Kopech, the power reliever the Yankees could really use. They stole him from the White Sox and in 6 scoreless outings, he's struck out 10 and walked 1.

Make him pay, Aaron. Unless Schuster pitches around you as well.

Change almost 2 feet outside, ball 1 Same change a bit lower, ball 2 on Judge. Sinker misses below the corner away, 3-0 FB above the knees, outside corner, 3-1. Change dives just outside, Judge guesses FB, pulls off it, 3-2 Takes his timeout.

Change way low, and a bit outside, Shuster walks both Soto and Judge, bases loaded, 1 out for Wells. It's smart play. Not terribly brave, but it is smart.

I though there was a chance Leiter could do okay here, he had a solid 1.101 WHIP and 13.1 K/9IP with the Cubs this year, but while he's still striking them out at a good rate, opponents are having zero issue making contact with his stuff. Bottom line, he's a guy with a 4.55 career ERA and he's pitching like one. Cashman needed to do better, and as seems to be the story with him these days, didn't do enough. Hopefully Leiter settles in and figures out, but his career track record doesn't inspire much confidence.
