Warren has been pummeled in his first two starts. Well, mainly last start, he settled in after a rough start in his debut. Probably gonna need to score a bunch of runs tonight. Hopefully a couple guys besides Soto & Judge show up tonight.

In the series finale in Chicago, the White Sox send righty Davis Martin out, looking to for a rare series win. Martin was drafted by the White Sox in the 14th round in the 2018 June Amateur Draft; he then pitched a total of 21 innings at two different rookie ball levels that year. He pitched all of 2019 at low-A, making 27 starts, going 9-9 with a 5.04 ERA. There was no minor league season in 2020 because of COVID, so Martin was in developmental camp. In 2021, he missed April with some sort or injury, then started 17 games at high-A, didn't pitch well, but the White Sox promoted him to make six starts in AA, where he pitched a bit better. But they didn't let him go deep in games; in the 23 starts, he pitched just 88 innings. Martin started 2022 back in AA, made 5 good starts there, was promoted to AAA for 2 more good starts, then was called up for the first time. He pitched 5 solid innings against the Royals in mid-May, taking a tough 2-1 loss. Back to AAA he went, making two starts, was called back up, made 3 good starts, and one bad one, and back to AAA he went. He bounced between AAA and majors a ridiculous five more times that year. In 9 starts and 5 relief games for the White Sox, he was3-6 with a 4.91 ERA. In 2023, he opened in AAA, made 3 good starts, and was shut down with an elblow injury. Diagnosed with a UCL tear, he had Tommy John surgery in mid-May. 13 months later, he began his rehab at rookie-ball, made 3 starts, wnt to high-A for two more, and after 2 more at AAA went reasonably well, he was called back to the majors.
In his return to the majors in late July, Martin pitched in long relief against the Mariners, had a bad start against the Twins, and then fired 6 shutout innings vs. the A's, allowing 2 hits and a BB, striking out 4, and left with a 2-0 lead, but the bullpen blew the win for him by giving up 3 runs in the 7th. So far this season, Martin is 0-1 in 3 games with a 3.65 ERA. In 12 1/3 innings, allowing 11 hits, 5 runs (earned), 1 HR, 7 BB, striking out 12. His WHIP so far is a subpar 1.322. This will be his first game against the Yanks.
Repertoire: Martin is a 5-pitch righty: slider, 4-seamer, cutter, curve and change. All the information about his pitches are based on very small sample sizes. The slider has sharp break into lefties, the 4-seam has less run than average, the cutter has way less glove-side break than average, the curve has above average break away from righties, and the change has good two-plane sink and tail in on righties. In run values, the cutter is a big plus, the change a smaller plus, the 4-seam is a big minus, and the curve is a smaller minues. the slider is average. The FB velo is dead average, the spin is above avereage. His extension is slightly above average. His hard hit rate is high, his barrel rate is very high, twice the MLB average. The flyball and popup rates are about average, the groundball rate below average, and the line drive rate is above average. The swinging strike rate is a little below average, the called strike rate is above average and so is the CSW. In "luck" factors, the BABIP is somewhat high, the strand rate is high and the HR/FB rate is low, and his ERA estimators say his ERA should be a run higher, but the sample size is so small that the error bars are too large to take that seriously.

Playing the name game: Davis we just hit with Davis Daniel last week, so you know the drill, Davis Schneider of the Jays is the best of the 4, all 4 are currently active, and all came to the majors 2022 or later. Last name Davis? You know that, too: Eric, Tommy, Chili, Willie, Storm, Ron, and the one and only Hall of Fame Davis, turn of the 19th century shortstop George. Last name Martin? Just over 30 of them; the best hitter is probably ex-Yankee catcher Russell Martin, the best pitcher was also briefly a Yankee, reliever Chris Martin, who compiled an ERA of 3.35 in 332 innings in 353 games, for the Yanks and 6 other teams in 9 seasons. The most famous Martin MLB history is Yankee player/manager Alfred Manual "Billy" Martin, who was feisty sparkplug infielder on five different title-winning teams in the 1950s, and as one of the most successful managers in MLB history, managing 5 different teams to divisional titles in his 19-year career, winning the title as Manager of the Yanks in 1977, and another pennant the year before. His story with the Yankees is way too long to rehash in a game preview, and most long-time Yankees fans know his story very well, anyway. Suffice it to say, he was both a very flawed man, but also very beloved by Yankees fans; both the best short-term manager in MLB history for turning a team around in a hurry, and a bad long-term manager for burning out pitches left and right. Bill James described his managerial style in a way I'll paraphrase: He managed as if there was no tommorow, and based on his personal experience that there usually wasn't a tomorrow for him.

Will Warren starts for the Yanks. This is his 3rd major league start. The first was a reasonable no-decision against the Phillies, in the 2nd one, he took a beating from the Angels in the 2nd game of last Wednesday's double-header, giving up 8 hits, 3 BB and a HR, allowing 8 4uns in 4 1/3 innings in a blowout loss. In those two starts, he's demonstrated good stuff, but almost no command of it. As of now, he's 0-1 with an 11.17 ERA. In the two starts, he's pitched 9 2/3 innings, allowing 12 hits, 12 runs (earned), 2 HR and 5 BB, with 12 K's. His WHIP to this point is a dreadful 1.759. As he's pitched against the Phillies and Angels only, this is his first game vs. the White Sox. For what it's worth, Eno Sarris' Stuff+ models think his sinker and cutter are plus pitches, and the slider is average; good in stuff, but poorly located.

Yesterday, the Yanks got great perfomances from just two players, but aided by Jake Cousins 1st career save, the 7 shutout innings from Nestor Cortes, backed solely by Juan Soto's 1st career 3-HR game, was all the Yanks got off the White Sox, and it was all they'd need, winning 4-1. The win pushed the Yanks back to 21 games over .500 at 71-50, with 41 to play.
In other AL East action: At Camden Yards, Uberrookie OF James Woods had 4 hits, 3 runs and a RBI and ex-Yankee prospect Andres Chaparro added 3 hits, 2 runs and a RBI to lead a 14-hit attack, and Jake Irvin pitched 6 solid innings of 2-run ball as the Nats stomped the O's, 9-3 in the first game of two. Irvin's win raised his record to 9-10. Trevor Rogers got hit hard again in his 3rd start for the O's, allowing 7 hits and 5 runs in 5 innings, and dropped to 2-11 on the year. In Tampa, the Astros got solo HRs from Alex Bregman in the 5th and Jeremy Pena in the 6th to break a 1-1 tie and take a 3-1 lead. The Rays got 1 back in the 8th, but Josh Hader pitched a 1-2-3 9th to close out the 3-2 Astros 7th straight win. Shane Baz pitched well, giving up 3 runs in 7 innings, but remained winless, now 0-2 in 7 starts since coming off the IL after nearly 2 years on it. Yusei Kikuchi pitched well for the 2nd time in a row since joining the Astros, allowing 1 run in 5 2-3 innings to get his record to 6-9 on the year. Hader's save was his 26th. At Fenway Park, the Red Sox broke open a 1-0 game on a two-run single by Rob Refsnyder and a three-run HR by Connor Wong to take a 6-4 lead to the 5th against the Rangers, but the Rangers struck back immediately with 4 in the 6th on four hits and three walks to make it 6-4. The Sox then put it away with 3 in the 8th, and went on to win 9-4. Jose Urena to the loss for Texas, allowing 6 runs in 4 2/3, and dropped to 3-8 on the season. The 4-run 6th knocked out Kutter Crawford after five shutout innings, making for a 5th straight bad start, but he still got the win to 8-9 on the year. Kenley Jansen got the last out in the 8th, and pitched a 1-2-3 9th for his 22nd save. In Anaheim, the Jays got 3 in the first on a RBI single by Ernie Clement and a 2-run double by Will Wagner, then added 2 more in the 3rd on back-to-back solo HRs by Vlad Guerrero, Jr. and Spencer Horwitz to take a 5-0 lead, and coasted to a 6-1 win. Kevin Gausman threw 7 shutout innings, giving up 6 hits and 2 BB, striking out 5 to get to 11-8 on the year. Carson Fulmer gave up those first five runs in 3 innings to drop to 0-3 on the season. Willie Calhoun hit a solo HR leading off the 9th against Erik Swanson for the Angels' only run of the game.
Going into today's games, the Yanks lead the O's by 1/2 game, the Sox are 6 1/2 back, the Rays are 11 back, and the Jays are 14 1/2 back.
