Small world, Pipps! Lima to Baton Rouge! We're all connected. Beach Boy Al Jardine is from Lima, Ohio. Also pronounced like the bean. Home of the Lima Terriers and Pandas! ...just looked that up!

Al Jardine was my role model when I played in a band in high school because he played rhythm guitar and sang mostly backing harmonies. Albeit at a much higher level than me. And I'm almost a foot taller than him, so I'll take that trade. Although they did let him out for a lead vocal for "Help Me Rhonda."

This trade may have hurt the Yankees more than any of the trades previously mentioned. The negative impact that Stanton had on the Yankees payroll that prevented them from adding players and clogging up the DH spot is way overlooked Meanwhile Stanton between injuries and poor production has given the Yankees slightly better than average (WAR) return He does however have an opportunity to make things right this year ... He has been fairly productive and the Yankees lineup and Win% has been much better when he is in the lineup This year we will find out if the trade was an obsolute disater or if Stanton could at least be an important role player on a WS team

Stan Bahnsen for Rich McKinney or Jay Buehner for Ken Phelps I forgot about Bahnsen for McKinney. Bahnsen won 21 games his first year in Chicago while McKinney never did squat. After Clete Boyer was traded following the 1966 season the Yankees never had a legitimate third baseman until they got Nettles in 1973. No wonder he was greeted as a hero after the succession of Charlie Smith and Bobby Cox and Jerry Kenney and Celerino Sanchez and McKinney and whoever else they stuck out there. Yep, the Nettles trade would also be one of the best Yankees trades. I didn't know a Yankee fan in my neighborhood that didn't hate the Bahnsen trade from day 1.

Mattingly could also play the OF, there was also the option of DHing McGriff. Players with the talent of McGee and McGriff shouldn't have be blocked from playing for the Yankees. Even if for some reason those players were blocked from playing for the Yankees, those were still 2 very bad trades.

Sorry, but in my opinion, the Yankees getting Bobby Meacham and Stan Javier from the Cardinals doesn't come close to making up for the McGee trade. I agree, and teams then didn't have a third of the roster occupied by the bullpen.

I know there's some disagreement with my opinion about the trade that I'm about to post and that's fine. Not everyone has to agree with my opinion, everyone had their own view. But I still hate this trade for reasons already posted...
Yankees traded Rudy May, Rick Dempsey, Tippy Martinez, Scott McGregor and Dave Pagan to the Orioles for Ken Holtzman, Grant Jackson, Doyle Alexander, Jimmy Freeman, Elrod Hendricks.

That deal is clouded by Bowie Kuhn's decision to block the acqusition of Vida Blue. The Yankees always held that they only made the deal with the Orioles because they had a deal with the A's for Blue.

Good Yankee trade... Yankees traded Beene, Buskey, Kline, and Peterson to Cleveland for Chambliss, Tidrow, and Upshaw.

Even if for some reason those players were blocked from playing for the Yankees, those were still 2 very bad trades. Fred McGriff wasn't ready to play in the MLB until 1986. In the fall of 1983, Mattingly had offered to play the Outfield, so Steve Balboni could get a regular chance to play 1st base, but the Yankees front office would turn down his offer. So Steve went "Bye-Bye" to the Royals in a December 1983 trade for MLB Reliever Mike Armstrong.

I'm not old enough to remember the Bahnsen Burner as a player but he was a fixture at Old Timers' Days, taking the mound with much younger Old Timers playing.

In my opinion, if the Yankees already had Blue on their team, that trade with the Orioles makes even less sense. Vida Blue was purchased by the Yankees from the Oakland A's on June 15, 1976. His trade would be later be voided by the MLB Commissioner Kuhn on the 18th, by using "not in the best interests of baseball" powers clause. On June 15, 1976, the Yankees new starting rotation now consisted of right-handers Catfish Hunter, Ed Figueroa, Dock Ellis, plus adding another righty in Doyle Alexander, plus 2 new lefty starters in Ken Holtzman and Vida Blue. In May, the Yankees had traded away 2 pitchers; Larry Gura and Ken Brett. Larry Gura was in Yankees Manage Martin's doghouse, because Billy Martin simply didn't like him. Ken Brett had been used in 2 games with team, earning a save. Orioles GM Hank Peters was happy to see Ken Holtzman and Doyle Alexander leave his team, he consider them as "Bad influences" on his team.

He has some very "interesting" stories to tell re Blue.

I do know that when the trade went down the Yankees had a big lead in the AL East and looking forward to the fall. McGregor had yet to throw a pitch from a big league mound and Tippy M had limited experience. And of course, the Yankees had # 15 to handle the catching. Just my opinion, but it seems like a deal that was strictly looking at the short term. www.startspreadingthenews.blog/post/the-trade-deadline-1976-a-day-that-changed-everything-and-didn-t-1
