I was a big Vida Blue fan. In my opinion, if the Yankees already had Blue on their team, that trade with the Orioles makes even less sense. I can't say I know what was in Gabe Paul's head. I do know that when the trade went down the Yankees had a big lead in the AL East and looking forward to the fall. McGregor had yet to throw a pitch from a big league mound and Tippy M had limited experience. And of course, the Yankees had # 15 to handle the catching. Just my opinion, but it seems like a deal that was strictly looking at the short term. www.startspreadingthenews.blog/post/the-trade-deadline-1976-a-day-that-changed-everything-and-didn-t-1Remember that Orioles Pitchers Ken Holtzman and Doyle Alexander were unsigned free agents and they were handled by Sports Agent Jerry Kapstein. The club wasn't going to sign them for the 1977 AL season. After 1976 World Series, Kapstein wanted a new contract from the Yankees for Doyle Alexander stating that he would be starting every 5 days in 1977, this despite would cause him to go the Rangers. Scott McGregor was out for the minor league season recovering from collarbone injury. Tippy Martinez would never be able to develop into the good reliever with the Yankees Manager Billy Martin around. He had already dump Pitcher Larry Gura to the Royals a month earlier.

Changing from the Highlanders to the Yankees. The original name is way cooler.

When Ruppert and his business partner Huston had acquire the Yankees in 1915, he wanted to name the Yankees, the Knickblockers, after of his beer brands, thankfully the NYC sports media would talk him out of the idea.
