Volpe needs a few days off me thinks. Agree wholeheartedly.

Okay, sports fans, in the strange trade vein of our old friend Karl from Pinstripes Plus: Anthony Volpe and Luis Gil for Bobby Witt, Jr.? What say you? I'd do it in a second. Witt is probably second (or third after Soto) in the AL MVP race. Really? And George Brett is going to show up at the 2024 Old Timer's Day in a Yankees Uniform.

Rays have rallied for 3 in the 8th to take a 4-2 lead, going top 9 in Tampa. Red Sox and O's in a death struggle, now 8-6 Sox bottom 5 at Camden Yards.
If those scores hold and the O's game is an enormous "IF" right now, the Yanks will take a 1-game lead in the East, lead the Sox by 8, the Rays by 12 and the Jays by 15 1/2. They're starting to stretch their lead over the bottom 3 back to where it was in June at the end of the hot streak.
Yanks win tonight is their 3rd in a row, and 13th in the last 18 games.

Great start to the weekend. Yanks get their 8th shutout of the season, but just the second since May 24th. Remember how good the pitching was March-May?

Of course, that is silly. Sure would like to have some of those injured relievers back and Schmidt at his best.

The stars of the game...HM to: the sucessful relief work by Weaver, Kahnle and Holmes. To Verdugo, whose sac fly in the 1st prevented that inning from being a typical early inning RISP wipeout.
3rd star of the game: Judge, for a vital tack-on run with his solo HR in the 8th to give Kahnle and Holmes enough elbow room to relax and throw strikes. 2nd star of the game: Peraza, for coming back to the majors and getting a crucial insurance run in the 5th with a solo HR, his first in the majors in over 11 months. 1st star of the game: Starter Gerrit Cole. His stuff wasn't his best, but plenty good enough to shut down this weak Tigers' offense with it's two shiny new rookie propects to 4 hits and 2 BB in 6 innings, striking out 8 and not giving up a run. The Tigers are one of Cole's "punching bags" and followed through on his career record against him, pitching his 3rd excellent game in a row, raising his record on the season to 4-2 and lowering the ERA to 4.15. The good news about missing the first two and half months? You can get off to a bad start, and still have time to quickly get your ERA back near where it normally is.

I didn't realize he was that far ahead of Judge. But, yeah; Witt looks like a franchise player for sure. No chance they'd even consider moving him.
