In the middle game, the Tigers send rookie righty Keider Montero to the mound for his first game against the Yanks. Signed by the Tigers as a 16-year-old International free agent from Venezuela in 2016, he spent his first two years with the organization in the Dominican Summer League. They allowed him to throw 10 starts and 47 innings in rookie ball and low-A in 2019, and he pitched well in both spot. His 2020 season was cancelled by COVID, so like all other prospects, he spent the year in developmental camp. He missed the first and last months of the 2021 minor league season with some unknown injury or injuries, but in between he threw 15 short, poor starts in high-A, going 4-8 with a 5.28 ERA. He spent the entire 2022 season at high-A as well, and in his first 18 starts, he pitched very poorly, going 5-6 with a 6.03 ERA. But he closed out with a great last seven starts: 2-1 with a 1.54 ERA, throwing exactly 5 innings in each of the seven. He made two more poor starts, and two decent one, starting 2023 again in high-A, and the Tigers promoted him to AA. He made 15 starts there, and the ERA wasn't good, 4.93, but he still went 10-2, so they moved him up to AAA to close out the season. He repeated that performance in his first give starts in AAA, ERA over 6.00, but went 3-1 anyway, and closed the season out with 3 excellent starts in the playoff, going 2-1 with an ERA of 2.65 in 17 innings.
The Tigers started him back at AAA this year, and he was so-so in 9 very short starts: 0-1 with a 4.40 ERA, just 30 1/3 innings pitched. They called him up to pitch the 2nd game of a doubleheader against the Pirates in late May, and he threw a poor 4 1/3 innings, so they sent him back to AAA. He was 1-3 with an ERA over 6.00 in his short return to the minors, but the Tigers had multiple injuries in the rotation, so they brought him back to the majors. He pitched very well in his 2nd and 3rd starts back with the Tigers against the division rival Twins and Guardians, but has since pitched poorly, 5 bad starts in his last 6. For the Tigers this season, Montero is 3-5 with a 5.76 ERA in 9 starts and 1 relief game. In 54 2/3 innings, he's allowed 57 hits, 36 runs, 35 earned, 12 HR, 17 BB and has struck out 44. His WHIP for the season is 1.354. This is his first start ever against the Yanks.
Repertoire: Montero is a 5-pitch righty: 4-seamer, slider, knuckle curve, change and a rarely used sinker. He's listed at 6-1, 145 lbs, but I think that must have been his height and weight when he signed at 16 years old; looking at him briefly on video, he's thin, but not Oil Can Boyd blade-thin. Longerhagen at Fangraphs had him as the Tiger system's #22 prospect. His scouting grades are kinda weird; Longerhagen says his FB is a 55, slider 50, curve 50, change and command 40, but overall 35+(???) and sees him eventually being a middle/long reliever for the Tigers. His 4-seamer has less rise and significantly less run in on righties than average. His slider looks like a terrific pitch on paper, more than average drop, way more than average break glove-side. The curve is similar to the slider, but more like a slurve, slightly better than average drops, much greater than average glove-side break. The change gets slightly less drop than average, slightly more tail than average. The sinker gets worse than average sink and tail. In run values, the curve and change are farily big minuses, the sinker and FB are smaller minuses, and the slider is his only plus pitch, so far. His FB velocity is about average, the spin is below average, and the curve spin is elite, top 10% in MLB. His extension is a tiny bit below average. Montero's line drive rate is above average, the groundball and popup rates are below average, the flyball rate is about average. His barrel and hard hit rates are somewhat higher than average. His called strike rate is a bit above average, but the swinging strike and CSW rates are a bit below. His BABIP is slightly high, the strand rate is quite low, and the HR/FB is very high, nearly 20%. The three "luck factors" are all working against Montero, and his ERA estimators say his ERA should be about 2/3 of a run lower than it is, but even so, still above 5.00. The pitch mix so far in his time in the majors: 4-seamer averaging 95 about 45% of the time, slider 83 about 31%, curve 79 about 11%, change 86 about 10%, and sinker averaging 94-5 about 3 times a start (3%).

Carlos Rodon goes for the Yanks vs. Montero. He's having a bit of a rollercoaster season. First 7 starts: 2-2 with a 3.68 ERA. Then a 7-start, 7-game win streak with an ERA of 2.38. Then he got hammered for 6 starts: 0-5 with a 9.67 ERA. Finally, 4 more good starts, winning 4 in a row with a 2.22 ERA. Add it all up and he's 13-7 on the season, tied for 2nd in the league in wins, but with a mediocre ERA of 4.18. The main problem is that he's been giving up a ton of HRs: in 131 1/3 innings, he's allowed 117 hits, 67 runs, 63 earned, 24 HR, 43 walks and struck out 143. He's 3rd in the AL with 24 HR allowed and has the 3rd worst HR per 9 innings ratio at 1.6.
Against the Tigers, unlike Cole, the Tigers have hit Rodon hard. He's 6-3 against them in 12 starts, but with an ERA of 5.23. In 65 2/3 innings, he's allowed 64 hits, 39 runs, 38 earned, 11 HR, 19 BB and struck out 78. His WHIP against them is acceptable: 1.264, but again, the HR rate is too high. The Detroit team quadruple slash line against Rodon is .256/313/.452/.765. He didn't get to face them in the 3-game sweep at the Stadium; his last game against the Tigers was a brutal beating he took at the Stadium in early September last year, probably his worst game of the season until that annihilation he endrured in his last game of the season (you know, the one in which he gave up 6 hits and 2 BB and 8 runs without getting an out in a 12-5 Royals rout). Against the Tigers that day, in 3 2/3 innings, he gave up 8 hits, 7 runs (earned), 1 HR and stuck out 4 in another lopsided loss, 10-3.

I would have sat Volpe and gave Peraza another start. Peraza was swinging a hot bat at Triple A before being promoted, then he hits a HR last night. So I guess it makes sense for the Yankees not to start him today (sarcasm).

Yesterday, the Yanks played the Tigers and Gerrit Cole was excellent for his 3r straight start, firing 6 shutout innings, allowing just 4 hits and 2 BB, while striking out 8. The Yanks got a sac fly from Verdugo in the 1st, and two solo HRs: Oswald Peraza's 1st major league HR in nearly a year in the 5th, and Judge's 9th HR in his last 19 games in the 8th, and the Yanks beat the Tigers 3-0. The Yanks got scoreless innings in relief from Weaver, Kahnle and Holmes (for his 26th save). Cole got the win to get to 4-2 on the season, lowering his ERA to 4.18. Beau Brieske opened for the Tigers and gave up Verdugo's sac fly in his only inning, taking the loss to drop to 1-3 this year. The win was the Yanks 3rd in a row and 13th in their last 18 games, and moved them to 23 games over .500 for the first time since late June.
Inother AL East action....the Jays flew to Chicago to start a 3-game series against the Cubs yesterday afternoon. The Cubs took a 2-0 lead in the first, but the Jays tied it with runs in the 4th and 5th, and then the Cubs got two more in the bottom of the 5th on back-tp-back solo HRs by Crow-Armstrong and Minaya, and added another in the 7th on a HR by Ian Happ. The Jays rallied for 3 in the 9th when Cubs' current closer Hector Neris balked in a run with 1 out, then gave up a game-tying two-run triple to George Springer. The game stayed tied into the bottom of the10th, when with nobody out and runners at 1st and 2nd, Seiya Suzuki singled through the left side to score ghost-runner Happ, walking it off against Jays' current closer ex-Yankee Chad Green, wining 6-5. The winner in relief was Tyson Miller who pitched a scoreless 10th working around the ghost-runner. He's now 4-1 on the season. Green's loss dropped him to 3-3. In Tampa, the Diamonbacks took a 2-0 lead on RBI singles by Pederson and Gurriel, Jr, but the Rays struck back in the 5th on a solo HR by Dylan Carlson, and took the lead in the 8th on a 2-run single by Josh Lowe and a RBI single from Carlson to take a 4-2 lead. The D'backs tied it in the 9th on a two-run HR by Corbin Carroll off Rays' closer Pete Fairbanks, but the Rays walked it off in the bottom of the 9th when, with two outs and Johnny DeLuca on 1st, Brandon Lowe hit a hard grounder up the middle, that hit the side of the mound, deflected to the right of 2nd, when off Blaze Alexander's mitt as he dove to his right, died in short center, and when centefielder Jake McCarthy charged hard to stop DeLuca at 3rd, he botched the barehanded pickup and the ball got behind him, allowing DeLuca to score on the single/E-8. Fairbanks got the vultured win after blowing the save on Carroll's HR; he's now 3-3 on the year, Justin Martinez to the undeserved loss to drop to 5-3 on the season. The loss was just the 4th in 18 games for Arizona and broke a 6-game winning streak. The win was just the Rays' 3rd in their last 10 games. In Camden Yards, the Red Sox and Orioles staged a back-and forth death struggle...the Sox got 2 in the first on a pair of RBI double, the O's got 1 back in the 2nd on a single by Urias. The Sox got two in the 3rd on a HR by Devers, the O's answered with 3 in their half on a RBI double, a RBI triple and a walk wild pitch that scored Holliday after his triple. The Sox countered with 4 in the 4th on a single by Wong and a 3-run HR by Yoshida. The O's fought back with 2 in the 5th on another RBI single by Urias and a sac fly. The Red Sox got a solo HR by Duran and a 2-run HR from Hamilton in the 7th to make it 11-6, but the O's got back within 2 runs in the bottom of the inning on a 2-run HR by Urias and a RBI groundout. In the 8th Yoshida knocked in his 4th run of the game with a RBI single to make it 12-9, and Urias answered with his fifth RBI of the game on a sac fly to make it 12-10. There was no scoring in the 9th, and that's the way it ended. Kenley Jansen pitched a 1-2-3 9th for Boston and got his 23rd save. Coope Criswell gave up 6 runs in 3 1/3 mostly ineffective innings as the bulk releiver, yet somehow was credited with the win (I guess it wasn't "brief and ineffective"), he's now 5-4 on the season, Corbin Burns somewhat poor pitching of late got a whole lot worse; he was pounded for 8 runs and 10 hits with 3 walks in just 4 innings, and took the loss, dropping to 12-5 on the season. Yoshida had three hits to go with his 4 RBI, Duran had 3 hits and 3 runs scored, Devers drove in 3 for Boston; Henderson had 4 hits and scored 3 and Urias had 3 hits with his 5 RBI for Baltimore in the losing cause. The win was the Sox' 3rd in 9 games; the O's are now 7-7 in their last 14 games.
Going into today's games, the Yanks lead the O's by a full game, the Sox are 3rd, 8 games back, the Rays are 4th, 11 back, and the Jays are in the cellar, 15 1/2 back.

So I guess it makes sense for the Yankees not to start him today (sarcasm). The current plan is to platoon Cabrera (vs. righties) and Peraza (cs. lefties) at 3rd, and Rice (vs. righties) and LeMahieu (vs. lefties) at 1st. We'll see how long this lasts.

Elsewhere in the AL East today...the Jays are in Chicago to play the middle game of the series against the Cubs this afternoon at Wrigley at 2:20 pm. Chris Bassitt (9-11, 4.30 ERA) starts for the Jays; his struggles resumed after a good game against the O's when the A's pounded him for 7 runs in 4 innings last time out. Bassitt is now 2-5 in his last 7 starts with an ERA over 7.00. Justin Steele (3-5, 3.16 ERA) goes for the Cubs, coming off back to back good games against the Cards and White sox. At the DisturbingDome™ at 4:10, the Diamonbacks play the middle game of the series against the Rays. Zac Gallen (9-5, 3.69 ERA) starts for Arizona; he's struggled some lately, his ERA is just over 5.00 in his last 8 starts, but the D'backs have been so hot, he's still 3-1 in those 8 games. Jeffrey Springs (0-1, 4.61 EA) makes his 4th start since coming back from Tommy John surgery, and he pitched a good 5 innings againt the O's in a no-decision last time, striking out 8, walking none and giving up just 1 run. At 7:05 pm at Fenway, the O's and Red Sox play the 3rd game of their 4-game series. The Red Sox go with the somewhat lucky Brayan Bello (10-5, 497 ERA); he luck turrned on his a bit when threw a good game his last time out against the Rangers, but took a no-decision after giving up just 1 run in 6 innings. The O's will start veteran retread Albert Suarz (5-4, 3.39 ERA). Suarez has come out of a 4-start funk to throw 11 2/3 innings of shutout ball in winning his last 2.
And, at 1:10 pm at Comerica Park, it's Rodon vs. Keidero.
