Torkelson works the count to 2-0, drives it to deep right center, Soto makes a good try racing back to the wall, but can't get it, bounces away for a leadoff triple and Mayza is immediately in trouble.

1st pitch to Jung is swing and miss on a sinker, gets away a bit from Wells, Torkelson goes for home and appears to beat the throw, but apparently never touched home before the tag. Yanks challenge the original safe call, and it's overturned, 1 out, nobody on, good play by Wells and Mayza saves a run.

Sinker down and in on the 0-1 to Jung, grounds it to Volpe on the right side of 2nd, 2 down.

Re: the Weaver trade. it turned out to be a disaster, but actually, at the time, Weaver was the better pitcher. Of course, he pitched in Tiger Stadium, but at the time of the deal, Torre couldn't seem to get 5 innings out of Lilly in most starts and Weaver was more durable and his record was just as good if not bettter. Turned out that Weaver was another pitcher that couldn't handle NY and the Yanks, but he proved himself just 3 years after the Yanks got rid of him, as he was the 2nd best starter on the title-winning Cards team in 2006. I hated the trade the day it happened. Lilly made 11 starts for the Yankees in 2002 and went more than 6 innings in 6 of them, including a 3 hit shut out a week before the trade where he struck out 11. Plus he was left handed and wasn't intimated by Yankee Stadium. Everyone seemed to know at the time that Weaver wasn't made for NYC, except Cashman. I would have been excited to get Jeff Weaver, but I did not want to lose Ted Lilly, a lefty who was not intimidated by anything and went to Fresno City College

Baez takes a sinker on the corner away, 0-1 Fouls off another sinker a bit further outside, 0-2 Chases a low slider, tipped into the mitt for the K, inning over.
Top 7, 4-0 Tigers. Stanton, Verdugo and Volpe for the Yanks in the 7th against Holton again.

Stanton tries to pull three outside pitches that of course doesn't go well.

Verdugo takes a sinker in the zone down and in, 0-1 Takes a sinker at the knees inner 3rd, 0-2 Takes a slider outside, 1-2 Takes a FB low, outer half, 2-2 Sinker inside, jams him, grounder to Ibanez, throws to 1st. Holton covers and almost runs into Torkelson who's already at 1st, but no collision, 2d own.

Have we picked up more DFA'd players this year than ever? The art of dumpster diving. Makes me wonder about Efross. I guess they feel he's not ready for the big leagues.

Volpe takes a FB at the knees, 0-1 Takes a cutter inside, 1-1 Takes a FB on the corner away, 1-2 Takes a change well low, 2-2 Takes a cutter that misses up and in, 3-2 Cutter away, Volpe lunges a bit, spoiling it as it was close to the outside corner. FB up and away, and he tries go to right with it, but tops it to Ibanez for the 3rd out. Inning over. Another quiet 1-2-3 for Holton, he's retired 6 Yankees in a row on just 31 pitches.
Bottom 7, 4-0 Tigers. McKinstry, then back to the top for Vierling and Ibanez.
