They've already announced Dominquez is going back to the minors after tonight's game. Well that's what the 27th man does because he's technically not on the roster. With Rice's struggles and Stanton not hitting a lick, one has to wonder if Dominguez has an outstanding game if they wouldn't make a roster move and go with DJ/O-Cab at first. What's strange is that they bring him up for one day, bat him 5th against one of the best pitchers in the league and then send him back down again. I guess the Yankees really want that extra year of control.

Honestly, as much as I root for all Yankees, I wouldn't mind someone going Nancy Kerrigan on Stanton if it meant Dominguez got his roster spot. The Yankees' lineup looks really weak against LHP right not. Torres is inconsistent, Stanton, Volpe, and DJL all aren't hitting. Trevino is a question mark just coming off the DL. O-Cab's struggled from the right side. Rice isn't hitting anyone, especially lefties. I guess we have to hope for Soto, Judge, Dominguez, and maybe Peraza?

I think if the Yanks call up Dominquez in September, they don't lose the extra, so maybe we'll see him then. But there used to be a time when all the Yankees cared about was winning, not player contract manipulation.

With Peraza up here it would not be a bad idea to give Volpe a day off or 2 to get a rest and get his head together. He has been awful at the plate the past week. I honestly don't get why the Yankees treat Anthony Volpe like he's Juan Soto. I get the idea of letting players work through their struggles, but it almost seems like they're scared to let anyone spell him because we might find out they are better. Agreed. I am a fan of young Mr. Volpe but this seems less than fair.

Yanks were in love with his back story...local kid, etc. He was essentially anointed as the next Yankee SS. It'll be interesting to see how they handle it if Peraza shows he can hit.

Torres Soto Judge Stanton Dominguez Trevino Volpe Lemahieu Peraza Stroman For some reason, our hottest hitter not named Judge is out again. One has to wonder what the braintrust does if Dominguez comes out and goes 4 for 4. Right back to Scranton? Well, yeah, kinda. They can't afford two OF-only guys in a 4-man bench. And I doubt they'll cut Grisham at this point, he's Judge's legs now, if nothing else.

The Yankees face a very uphill matchup in the series finale on ESPN's SundayNightWeCareMoreAboutIrritatingIn-gameInterviewsThanTheActualGameCast. The Yanks send Marcus Stroman, who pitched a good game last time out to face the best left-handed starter in the AL in Tarik Skubal. As I mentioned they might in the series preview on Friday, the Tigers acrivated their best hitter, lefty Riley Greene from the IL (he was originally not supposed to be back until the Tigers go to Wrigley to play the Cubs on Tuesday) to be their 27th man for the game in Willimsport. He's batting 2nd and is the DH for the Tigers against Stroman today. The Yanks have, in turn, called up Jasson Dominguez to be their 27th man tonight. He's batting 5th and playing left field. Greene is certain to stay in the majors if he's physically sound, with the Tigers cutting, probably Malloy (or Baez??? Ibanez??? McKinstry???) after the game, while Dominguez is almost certain to be sent back to AAA, at least until roster expansion in September.

Skubal pitched against the Yanks in the series at the Stadium in early May, so there's no need to go over his career again. Since that day, his ERA is higher, but at 2.78 since that game, would still be 2nd in the AL overall. In 17 starts since the game in May, Skubal is 10-4 with that 2.78, and on the season, in 24 starts, he's 14-4 with a 2.53 ERA, leading the lead in wins and ERA. In 149 1/3 innings, he's allowed 109 hits, 45 runs, 42 earned, 29 BB, with 180 strikeouts. His WHIP is the season is an elite 0.924. He's in the league top 10 (aside from wins and ERA), in pitcher bWAR (1st, 5.6), winning percentage (1st, .778), WHIP (2nd), Hits per 9 innings (4th), BB per 9 (5th), K's per 9 (1st), games started (tied for 8th), innings pitched (5th), K/BB ratio (7th), and HR per 9 (3rd). There's not a single area of pitching he hasn't excelled at this season, and he's the current front runner for the AL Cy Young Award. He's been even better in his last 9 starts, 6-1 with a 2.58 ERA, and only one game in which he didn't get at least a quality start, going at least 6 innings in all 9 games.
Against the Yanks, he's made 4 previous starts, and is 1-2 with a 3.43 ERA against New York. In 21 innings, he's allowed 18 hits, 9 runs, 8 hits, 6 HR, 7 BB and struck out 30. His WHIP against the Yanks is 1.191, and the Yankee team quadruple slash line against him is .228/.299/.506/.805. His most recent start against the Yanks was the one in May, in which he gave up a solo HR to Judge in the 1st, three hits including an RBI double to Cabrera in the 2nd, and then he almost visibly got angry and dominated the Yanks the last 4 innings, giving up a single and a double and striking out 10. For the game, he went 6 innings, and allowed 6 hits, 2 runs (earned), 1 HR, 0 BB, and 12 K, taking a no decision in a 5-2 Yankees win.
Repertoire: Skubal is a five pitch lefty, leans on 4 of the pitches heavily, but doesn't throw any of them more than a 1/3 of the time. He has 4-seamer, change, sinker, slider and a knuckle curve. His FB gets average movment both ways, but 97 mph from a lefty carries a high value on its own. His change gets average sink and slightly better than average tail. His sinker gets less than average sink and average tail. The slider acts almost like a cutter, less than average drop and break in on righties. The curve acts like a slurve, less drop and break than the average slider. The FB and sinker are his best pitches by run values, both have big plus value, +10 or more runs each. The slider and curve are small plusses; the change is a tiny plus. His overall combined run values are the highest in the majors, as you'd expect of the pitcher leading MLB in ERA. His FB velocity is top 10% in the majors, probably top 5% if you count just starting pitchers. His FB spin is below average, his curveball spin is even further below average, and his extension is also below average. The barrel rate and hard hit rates against Skubal are both measurably below average. The three "luck factors" are all in Skubal's favor, the strand percentage, BABIP and HR/FB rates are all in the top 10-20 of MLB qualified starters. His ERA run estimators think his ERA should be about 1/4 run higher, but 1) that's still an elite ERA and 2) as the topmost elite level of starting pitching at any given time in the majors, the pitcher is so dominant he "makes his own luck". The pitch mix so far this year: 4-seamer averaging 97 about 33% of the time, change 86 about 26% of the time, sinker 96-7 about 21%, slider 89 about 15%, knuckle curve 78-9 about 5%.

Well, yeah, kinda. They can't afford two OF-only guys in a 4-man bench. And I doubt they'll cut Grisham at this point, he's Judge's legs now, if nothing else. If I suggest Wells play 1st again do you think they are going to throw me off the board ? I won't. But I'm forced to point out that: 1) He's a good catcher behind the plate and receiving, and if you play him there, you're giving at bats to Trevino/Narvaez instead of DJ (well, that's OK, I guess) and Rice (not as OK, he's struggling, but I want to see who he handles it), and at some point (who knows when?) Rizzo. 2) We don't know if he can play first. It might be better to play Trevino and Narvaez over DJ and Rice, but that's not certain, and you're moving Wells off his best position for what is likely a marginal gain. At least, that's what I think, since you sorta asked.

Marcus Stroman gets the uneviable task of matching up against Skubal. His threw a good start last time out at the Stadium against a solid-hitting Rangers team, his first good start in, really, 8 starts. First time he went at least 5 innings and allowed less than 3 runs since mid-June. Since that 5 2/3 shutout innings against the Royals, he's gone 2-4 in 9 starts with a 6.26 ERA. On the season, he's 8-6 with 23 starts with an ERA of 4.01. In 121 1/3 innings, he's allowed 118 hits, 61 runs, 54 earned, 18 HR, and 52 BB with 87 strikeouts. His WHIP for the year is high: 1.401. He's still near the worst in the league among qualified starters in the following areas: 2nd worst WHIP, 8th worst hits per 9 innings, 9th worst HR per 9, tied for 3rd in most walks allowed, 2nd worst BB per 9, lowest K per 9, and easily the lowest K/BB ratio in the AL. The Yanks usually aren't betting underdogs against the Tigers, but it's hard to see how they won't be on Sunday. (and they aren't, Tigers are basically 6-5 favorites on the money line).
For what it's worth, Stroman has pitched extremely well in his career against the Tigers. In 6 prior starts, he's 2-1 with a 1.74 ERA. In 41 1/3 innings, he's allowed just 25 hits, 9 runs, 8 earned, 2 HR and 13 BB with 29 strikeouts. His WHIP against Detroit is a even lower than Skubal's WHIP for the season: 0.919. The Tigers' team quadruple slash line vs. Stroman is .175/.244/.238/.481. His last start against them was in the series in May this year at the Stadium. He went 5 1/3 innings, gave up just 3 hits and 1 run and didn't give up a HR, but walked 5 against just 3 K's. He got a no-decision in a 2-1 Yankees win.

Yesterday, the Yanks played the Tigers in the middle of their series, and three Tigers pitchers shut them out on just 4 hits. Starter Keider Montero completely overturned his bad pitching lately, holding the Yanks to 2 hits and 2 BB while striking out 5. Lefty kitchen sink junkballer Tyler Holton held them to just one hit in 3 innings with 2 K's. Closer Jason Foley ran into a bit of trouble in the 9th on a double by Judge and a walk to Verdugo, but got Volpe to fly out to wall in left to end it. Carlos Rodon simply didn't have anything for the first time in 5 starts, giving up a two-out single in the first for a run, and giving up a single and walk and a two-run double after two were out in a 36-pitch 2nd inning. He left after 90 pitches in 3 1/3 innings down by 4, and that was the way it ended, 4-0. The loss broke the Yanks 3-game win streak and put them back at 22 games over .500, 73-51 with 38 left on the schedule.
In other AL East action....the Cubs got a leadoff HR from Ian Happ and a 2-run triple by Michael Busch in the 5th to build a 3-0 lead, then held on as the Jays got an RBI single by Daulton Varsho in the 7th and a solo HR by Addision Barger in the 9th, to win 3-2. Justin Steele started but was lifted after two scoreless innings due to a rain delay. The Cubs needed 6 relievers to nail down the win; Ex-Jay Nate Pearson threw a scoreless 3rd and 4th and was awarded the W, he's 2-0 with Chicago and 2-1 on the season. Chris Bassitt came back after the delay and got through 5 innings, but gave up all 3 runs and took to drop to 9-12 on the season; he's also 2-6 in his last 8 starts. After giving up the HR to Barger leading off the Jays' 9th, righty Jorge "I'll just fire my glove into the stands" Lopez came back to strike out Springer, Varsho and Guerrero to close it out for his 1st save as a Cub and his 3rd of the season. In Tampa, the Rays got to Diamondbacks "ace" Zac Gallen for two in the first on a RBI triple by Josh Lowe and a double steal in which Lowe stole home, then two more in the 2nd on a 2-run single by Yandy Diaz, and coasted to a 6-1 win over the D'backs. Jeffrey Springs got his first win in a year and a half, going 5 innings of 4-hit, 1-run ball, walking 1 and striking out 7, he's now 1-1 in 4 starts since his return. With the score 6-1 in the 8th, Richard Lovelady bailed Manuel Rodriguez out of a bases loaded, 2-out jam, barely qualifying, and then nailed the 2nd save of his career with a 1-2-3 9th. Gallen gave up the four runs over 5 innings, taking the loss to drop to 9-6 on the year. The Rays wrapped up the series win after losing 5 of their previous 6. In Baltimore, Bryan Bello and the recalled Cade Povich matched zeros for five innings, but in the 6th, both gave up a run. In the 7th, Povich was taken out after giving up a 1-out single, but reliever Yannier Cano threw gas on the fire, giving up a double to Yoshida and 2-run single to Duran, and the Sox had a 3-1 lead. They added two more in the 8th on Devers' 27th HR of the season, and that was it for the scoring, the Sox winning 5-1. Povich was saddled with the tough loss, dropping to 1-6, depite giving up just the 2 runs in 6 1/3. Bello got the win because he was the pitcher of record after giving up just 1 in 6 innings. He's now 11-5 on the season. Four Boston relievers combined for 3 scoreless innings to nail it down. The Sox have now won 4 of 6, the O's have lost 4 of 6.
Going into today's games, the Yanks were still a game up on the O's, the Sox were 7 back, the Rays were 11 back, and the Jays were still 15 1/2 back.

Earlier in the AL East today...At Camden Yards, the O's got the split of the 4-game series against the Sox with a 4-2 win. Adley Rutschman gaave them a 1-0 lead with a leadoff HR (#18 of the season for him) in the 5th, and Gunnar Henderson capped a 3-run rally in the 6th with his 33rd HR of the season, a 2-run shot of lefty reliever Bailey Horn in the 6th. The Sox got a run in the 8th and another in the 9th on a RBI single by Rafaela, and a solo HR by Refsnyder, but current closer Seranthony Dominguez struck out Tristan Casas (finally off the IL) and Devers to end it for his 4th save of the season and 3rd with Baltimore. Albeert Suarez pitched 6 scoreless innings for his 6th win of the year against 4 losses, and Kutter Craword gave up 3 of the O's 4 runs to take the loss, dropping to 8-10.
At the WTFDome™ in Tampa, the Rays built a 6-0 lead on a 2-run HR by Brandon Lowe in the 3rd, a two-run double by Caballero and a RBI single by Caminero in the 5th, and a run-scoring wild pitch in the 6th. The D'backs then staged a huge comeback and scored 6 in the last 3, and got home the ghost-runner in the 10th to take a 7-6 lead on: a sac fly in the 7th by McCarthy, a two-run HR by Carroll in the 8th and a 3-run HR by rookie catcher Del Castillo to tie it, and a Pederson RBI single in the 10th. But the Rays got their ghost-runner home as well on a single by Walls. The Rays nearly won it in the 11th, loading the bases with nobody out, but Justin Martinez struck out two, and got Alex Jackson to hit in to a force out at home on a tapper back to him. Arizona had the go-ahead run thrown out at home as well in the top of the 12th, and the Rays immediately responded to their narrow escape by walking it off on a single by Dylan Carlson to complete the sweep of the D'backs, 8-7 in 11 innings. Edwin Uceta got the win, his first decision in the majors this year, and Justin Martinez, still in the game after his Houdini in the 11th, took the loss to drop to 5-4 on the season.
In a pitcher's duel at Wrigley Field, Bowden Francis threw 7 brilliant innings of 3-hit shutout ball, striking out 7 for his 3rd excellent start in a row, and Joey Loperfido hit a solo HR for the only run of the game, and the Jays won 1-0. Shota Imanaga pitched 5 innings, giving up just the HR, striking out 6 and walking 1, and took the loss, dropping to 9-3. Francis, whose ERA was as high as 6.14 just before the All-Star break, dropped it to 4.38 on the year in raising his record to 6-3. The Cubs got the tying run to 2nd with 2 out in the 9th on a single and stolen base by Cody Bellinger, but current Jays' closer Chad Green got Dansby Swanson to ground out to 3rd to end it, locking down his 13th save, allowing the Jays to avoid getting swept this weekend.
Going into tonight's game, the Yanks are at 73-51, and lead the O's by 1/2 game. The Sox are in 3rd, 7 games over and 7 1/2 back. The Rays are in 4th, back over .500 by a game after their sweep of Arizona, and 10 1/2 out of 1st. The Jays climbed to 8 games under, but still 15 behind the Yanks, and solidly in the basement. At 7:10 pm at Comerica Park, it's Stroman vs. Skubal.

And now, The Sunday Standings™ for Sunday, August 18th
The Guardians went 4-2 this week, but have lost their last two, and 9 of 14. They lead the Central at 72-51. The Twins continue to play very well, winning 5 of 7 this week and their last 3 in a row. They're now 17 games over, and are 2 games behind Cleveland. The Royals won 3 of 5 this week, but their last 3 in a row, to keep pace. KC is now 13 games over, 2 games back of Minnesota and 4 games out of 1st. The 3-0 loss they took against the Yanks Friday evening was the Tigers' only loss this week; they're 5-1 for the week, just 4 games under .500 now, 8 1/2 behind KC, 10 1/2 behind Minny and 12 1/2 out of first. The White Sox managed to beat the Astros 5-4 on Friday, but went back to their usual selves in a 6-1 loss yesterday. 2-3 is a very good week for them, and they're 30-94, still on pace to be worse than the 1962 Mets, at 39-123, but a tiny bit better than the post-1900 worst 1916 Philadelphia A's. The ChiSox are already eliminated from the Central division title, and their tragic number for elimination for a Wild Card was 1 entering play today (and with their 2-0 loss in Houston today, they're now eliminated from the post-season).
