The six degrees of Kevin Bacon or the five degrees of Pipps! I loved Rich Little as a kid. Man, did he hit every talk show circuit of the 1970s, plus a perennial of the Dean Martin Roasts. Excellent impressionist. Very affable, and he actually practiced a few of his impressions that he was going to do that night at lunch. And then he did impressions of we three ink-stained wretches. It was amazing to see how quickly he picked up mannerisms and vocal inflections. That's remarkable that he could do an impression after just meeting you. Rich Little was the best impressionist for my money, not the funniest though. Bill Hader kills me, not because of the impression but the juxtaposition of scenarios and funny lines. Dana Carvey, too.

Yanks win, 5-2, their 2nd straight and 5th in the last 6 games, get back to 24 over .500 for the first time in about two months, at 78-54, 30 games left on the schedule. (Last time they were 24 over was 52-28, June 21st. That was the game Fried outdueled Nestor, made it look easy against the Yanks.)
Yanks pick up a 1/2 game on the O's to get to 2 games ahead. Jays tacked on 2 in the 9th, lead the Sox 7-3 at Fenway, if that score holds, the Jays pick up a 1/2 game on the Yanks, but the Yanks gain 1 1/2 on the Sox. If so the Jays are in 5th, 13 1/2 back, but climbing fast (that'll be their 6th win in a row). The Sox will still be in 3rd, but 10 1/2 back of the Yanks. Rays just about to get underway in Seattle: Pepiot vs. Miller. For the moment, the Yanks are 12 up on the Rays.

The absence of sequencing, changing eye levels, or destroying timing. It's something, for sure because his stuff is nasty. It really is, too much movement at times. It's like there is no set up to his pitches to batters at all. Just a constant repetition of two seamers or sliders, one after another and another. Easy to lay off low in the strike zone, since they know what is coming most of the time.

18-9 since "bottoming out" at 60-45 last month. If the can stay at that clip the rest of the way, it's 98-64. Not bad for a team with "2 good players" an inconsistent rotation, and a bum bullpen.

sort of a tidy win. nestor a solid 6 2/3 allowing hard contact before he humped up and the K'ed the side in the 6th. saved by a couple great catches. normally he'd be potg for his pitching performance but imho he shares it with judge who despite not contributing any offense saved a couple runs w his defense and the conversation would be a lot different.
no offense from the bash brothers. HM to torres as his HR gave us the early lead. volpe 3 hits and DJ two sac flies for RBI. wells & jazz hit HRs to pad the lead.
solid job by the pen excepting leiter.

Frye also did Hubert Humphrey and LBJ and George Wallace. He was the first I recall doing politicians. A step up from the Frank Gorshin formula of Cagney and Edward G. Robinson and Kirk Douglas.

The stars of the game...Hmmm, 3 stars tonight, and none of them Judge or Soto, a most unusual situation...for the Yanks this year. Well, Judge gets an HM for the play of the game, taking away at least a double and possibly a 2-run HR from Chaparro in the 4th, turning it into an inning-ending DP, and getting his 1000th hit. Verdugo with 3 more hits, and taking away an RBI double off the bat of Ruiz, runing into the wall in left to make a terrific catch. Torres for the leadoff HR and another hit from the leadoff spot. Another long at bat before the HR, giving the Yanks the immediate lead. DJ for two sac flies, tacking on runs, and a couple of nifty plays in the 9th to get the last two outs, saving Holmes on a high throw for the final out. The bullpen...well, Cousins and Holmes. Leiter...not so much.
3rd star of the game: Wells, for the HR in the 6th that made it 3-0, and picking off Yepez to end the 5th inning with 2 outs in a 2-0 game, and the usual good job calling and receiving.
2nd star of the game: Volpe, 3 hits, 2 runs, doubling in the 4th, getting to 3rd on a fly ball, scoring on a medium deep sac fly. Singling in the 5th after Wells' HR taking 2nd on Young's bobble, stealing 3rd, and scoring on a deep sac fly. Used his legs to help manufacture 2 runs, setting DJ up for his sac flies.
1st star of the game: Nestor wasn't very nasty most of the game tonight, gave up hard shot all over, helped by his outfielders multiple times, gut in the 6th when the Nats challenged with 2nd and 3rd with nobody, he humped up to 94 multiple times, whiffed Abrams and Crews and after a walk to Wood, blew it by Chaparro who had hit him hard twice the first two times up. Boone tried to stretch him through the 7th and he gave up a HR, but that was it. Not a 7-inning shutout, but his 3rd straight strong start and his 3rd straight win, getting to 8-10 on the season and getting his ERA under 4.00 for the first time in a month, now at 3.89. Nestor doesn't one to be the one left without a seat in the rotation when Schmidt gets back.

Funniest impression ever: Rich Little doing Johnny Carson in front of Carson. Not just the impression which was exaggerated in terms of speed and number of inflections but otherwise dead on, but watching Carson trying to repress all his mannerisms (and he can't, he just can't) because he doesn't want to mimic guy mimicking. He literally doesn't know what to do with his hards, face, or anything else.

Robinson and Kirk Douglas. Vaughn Meader... Yeah he was kind of a one-trick pony who unfortunately lost his meal ticket. Man, everybody had that "First Family" album in the early 60s. George Kirby was an Ed Sullivan staple. He used to do people like Sarah Vaughn and Pearl Bailey. A bit unusual for a man.

Game 2 is tomorrow on YES at 6:45. I will be in and out of the game thread, won't be able to do my usual pitch by pitch because I shall going frequently to a certain room in the house in prepartion for a specific procedure that should be familiar to many here. And then I might not be in the thread much on Wednesday for a related reason.
Will provide a preview for tomorrow, not sure about Wednesday. Maybe I can get it done tonight with inexact lineups and batter vs. pitcher data. We'll see....
Anyway, Gerrit Cole starts the middle game for the Yanks, looking for his 5th strong start in a row. After a rough start coming off the IL in June, he's now 5-2 with a 3.72 ERA. Patrick Corbin (3-12, 5.76 ERA) starts for Washington. He has a strong case for being the worst, and considering his contract, least valuable pitcher in MLB since 2021, at least. Which means he pitches a good game tomorrow. Maybe.
Now I'll check my notifications.
